Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
We welcome the re-release of Cowcatcher Milk Stout, named in tribute to the railroads that surround our brewery. Originally brewed as a limited edition 10-barrel batch, resounding appeals convinced us to offer it from January through April. This surprisingly sessionable brew is as black as night. With one deep whiff of its thick tan head, you’ll immediately catch the aromas of rich cocoa and dark-roasted coffee beans. Swish it around your palate to savor its full-body and smooth mouthfeel. It boasts a warm pumpernickel-bready flavor and finishes with a touch of bittersweet chocolate. Enjoy this beer with dessert - brownies, chocolate chip cookies, or any rich, sweet treat.

Nice blackish brown poured from tap at Kroger supermarket. Light head. Sweet chocolate aroma and similar taste. Smooth, lightly hopped and flavors of caramel and roasted malts

Awesome full mouthful that you want from a mil stout. This is an all around solid beer, but it has very little aroma. Strangely for such a potent taste. Chocolate and coffee is strong with this. Moderate bitterness that fades quickly.

12 oz can poured into a stemmed cylinder glass. I had this beer a year ago on tap, and it actually tasted better and fresher this time around out of the can. Jet black color, off-white head. Creamy, not sweet, and bold flavors. A solid milk stout, and I love supporting the local Virginia craft beer boom.

Pours basically black body (I'm not wasting time discerning if it's black or just dark brown) with one finger tan head and lace patches as head goes down. The aroma is mostly sweet as I pick up chocolate and toffee and hints of syrup (doesn't seem heavy enough for molasses) and some roasted and bread malts. Beer is smooth, refreshingly light and easy to drink, nothing heavy or real chewey about this beer. The sweet malts are dominant but there is balance so it's not a sugar blitz. Main tastes are chocolate, caramel, some sticky syrup, toffee, maybe vanilla (doubtful) with the balance coming from breadlike roasted malts. Hops are almost non existent but my wife thought she detected figs and possible plum but I don't. Not the greatest stout and I don't really pick up the milk/dairy aspect but it is a smoother, sweeter stout than most and is must try if you're at the brewery.

Poured on tap in a shaker pint, the beer is a dark, brownish-black coloring with a foamy, creamy, light, tan head. Good lacing on the glass, too. Aromas of rich milk chocolate, subtle mocha and roasted notes, and a nice creamy lactose character. Flavors are heavily roasted, with forward notes of milk chocolate, subtle bitter coffee, and solid roasted overtones. The roasted notes provide a solid bitterness to the chocolate aftertaste. Smooth and creamy bodied, with a slow, smooth, slightly dry finish. Solid brew.

A: Deep walnut brown, nearly black (although the bar was dim, making this assessment difficult). Head was a finger of tan foam -- it faded quickly, but left nice lacing.

S: Pretty typical for the style, with sweet, dark fruit aromas dominating. Toasted grain is definitely there, as well as a hint of maple syrup.

T: A lot of sweetness, both from the malt and the lactose, bordering on cloying. The sweetness gradually melds into faintly acrid, burnt grain mixed with coffee; and then stronger, tart fruit takes over, including plum and maybe a hint of bitter orange. Finish was a little bitter and acrid, giving some balance to the initial sweetness.

M: Somewhat chewy, fair carbonation, smooth/creamy; just a hint of dryness in the finish.

O: A very solid milk stout, one that can stand up to any of the style and hold its own. Perhaps a touch too sweet for my liking, and not the epitome of its class, but one I'd definitely order again.
