Had this in a shaker pint.

Squat tan head with a dark brown body. Retention of the foam was okay, did leave decent tendril lacing behind.

The malts are more apparent than the hops in this black ipa. A bit of dark chocolate, some roast, pine-y and estery hops, muted though.

The palate has stronger notes of the dark chocolate, roasty malts once again, not as sweet as the nose made it seem like it was going to be. There is a nice punch of pine hops on the swallow and in the back of the throat. Also, some dank green onion and earthy hops lurking in here. The hops should have a much bigger play on the palate than being muted mid-palate and flashing briefly in the finish.

This black IPA feels decent, creamy and a little dry from the hops. Very easy to drink this offering.

Thomas Beck was a good beer, but nothing special for a black IPA. The hops really needed to take control on the palate, but they come across muted and muddled. I really do appreciate the base malt and the dark chocolate and roasted flavors they produced.

Appearance: Black. White head.

Smell: Citrus, white wine, and some passion fruit-type aromas.

Taste: Citrus, passion fruit, a little bit of the roasted malt. There is a slight spiciness. The fruit and hops are at the forefront however.

Mouthfeel: Perfectly carbonated and a good, crisp beer with a rounded, overall dry finish. Just enough malt to carry the hops.

Overall: An excellent IPA and quite a surprise. This would be a top pick at a lot of Des Moines bars for something with a genuinely unique flavor.
