On tap at HopCats in Grand Rapids.

Pour is dark mahogany with excellent clarity. Small but durable head leaves decent lacing.
The aroma is good but not quite true to style, and presages the taste. It is dominated by sweet and medium roast malts. Some spiciness but very little dark fruit. The taste follows, meaning this is a very Americanized dubbel; it is really much more like an Amer. or Irish red.

I picked up a can of Petoskey Brewing Company's Horny Monk about a week ago for $2.45 at Boyne Country Provisions. This is the only one out of the three beers that Petoskey cans that I haven't tried yet, I like Dubbel's and I don't think there's enough Michigan made Dubbels around, I'm interested too see how this turns out, so lets see how it goes. No visible canning date, but it just showed up at the store that's fairly close to the Brewery, so I think it's pretty fresh. Poured from a tall 16oz can into a imperial pint glass.

A- The can looks ok, it's got the same layout as the other ones did, but I'm not a fan of the monk with the devil horns, it just doesn't seem right, and i'm pretty sure no real monk would approve of it. It poured a fairly clear dark red color that took on more of a ruby color when held to the light with two and a half fingers worth of light tan head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and left some spotty lacing behind. This was a pretty nice looking beer, I liked the color, but it was a little too clear for the style.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness that had a candied sugar like aroma followed by some Belgian yeast which is more spicy than fruity with a weird slightly soapy aroma. Up next comes the malts that impart a toasted, caramel malt and brown bread like aroma. The aroma is decent, but the slight soapy aroma and the lack of dark fruit aromas hurts this beer.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness followed by loads of malts which impart some toasted, caramel malt, grainy, and brown bread like flavors. Up next comes a light amount of Belgian yeast that's slightly fruity with the spices sticking out a little more. Towards the end comes a light soapy flavor followed by a light amount of bitterness and a very malty aftertaste. The taste isn't that great, with no dark fruity flavors and only a light amount of Belgian yeast it's not that true to style and the light soapy off flavor hurts it.

M- Smooth, slightly sticky, a little crisp, on the light side of being medium bodied with a low amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel wasn't bad, but it could be truer to style.

Overall I thought this beer wasn't that great and I don't think that it's a good example of the style, it's just lacking too many key aspects of the style and with the addition of a soapy aspect it make for a below average Dubbel. This beer had decent drinkability, it was fairly smooth, not filling, but the taste didn't do a good job at holding my attention, one pint is more than enough for me, I feel no need to drink another one. I liked the appearance the most, it wasn't a bad looking beer. What I liked the least about this beer was how untrue to style it was, it didn't do a good job at representing the style. I wouldn't buy this beer again and I wouldn't recommend it as a good Dubbel. All in all I wasn't impressed with this beer and I think it's about on the same level as their Amber Ale and I think their IPA is my the best out of the three beers they can. So far I'm not too impressed with the beers that Petoskey has choose to can, they haven't been impressive, but I know they can do better since most of the other beers I had at the brewery were much better. Better luck next time guys, this one just didn't turn out to be a good Dubbel.

Red amber pour with soft white head. Had an aroma of dark fruits (cherries). Malt was also present in the aroma as well as the taste. Medium bodies with a smooth texture and pleasant aftertaste. Soft brew with a sweet taste. Good amount of carbonation. Really enjoyed this beer from Petoskey Brewing Company!
