I have been to the Rat a few times over the last few years. It usually ends up being the late night spot for me and the Brits when attending Borfets/De Molen fest. Very small local bar. Lot's of Belgian staples in bottles (Trappists, Rodenbach La Chouffe ect). A few nice local beers on tap. I had a excellent local dutch smoked double bock on my last visit. The key to this place is the lambic selection. The owner loves lambic and he has a special list of vintage bottles. This is not on the regular beer list. You pretty much have to ask about it. I have had DF St Valentine's Gueuze, 1996 Hansens Oude Gueuze, Oude Beersel from a bladder, Armand's Spirit and De Cam Kriek just to give some examples. I didn't notice any Cantillon but all other lambic producers were represented. Best lambic list in the Netherlands as far as I can tell. No food but the owner was happy to suggest takeaway restaurants near by.
Over all I love this place. The only downside is the size. It gets crowded. But it seems like it is a real local place. Regular Dutch people drinking there. Not so beer geeky. I like that a lot. Everyone was very friendly. The owner and staff have always been great. Very Anglo-friendly. It's funny this place has become my go to bar in Utrecht when at Borfets.
Highly recommended. Especially if you are in Utrecht looking for something sour to sip on.
Apparently according to Facebook they started carrying Struise and Kernel beers since my last visit.. Giddy yup!
