22oz bottle as an extra in a trade with BryanC on thebeerspot. Thanks! Apparently this bottle is less than a week old, and the "D" month marked on the label confirms it.

A very pretty IPA, this. Golden, fiery orange body shows a sparkling, almost-filtered clarity in my Jester King snifter. Not much head or carbonation, but the ring of spittle-colored foam retains well. The aroma throws a healthy dose of "C" hops at the nose--floral, citrusy, piney, and ultimately fragrant. Hop notes get balanced nicely by caramel and light toffee notes from the malt.

The flavor is big on bitterness, as resin and pine sap leave a lingering bite on the sides and back of the palate. Flavor hops are there, but ultimately overshadowed a bit. Still, some tasty notes of tropical fruit and fresh, green hop cones. The grain bill and alcohol presence are clean and unoffensive, but could stand to provide a bit more balance to the bitter onslaught. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and light in carbonation. A bit sticky and chewy, but it's a good thing. Overall, a more-than-serviceable IPA from what appears to be an up-and-coming brewery out of VA. Cheers!

Poured from the tap in Chester, VA.
Aroma- A nice blend of hops and citrus.
Appearance- The beer pours a murky burnt orange with a large white head.
Taste- The hops come through with a nice melding with the citrus flavors, nice taste.
Palate- A really good IPA, has a medium body with mild carbonation and an oily texture.
Overall- I liked this beer, I will drink it again when I am back in the area.

Not overly hoppy, very smooth. very drinkable. Especially great for pairing, since it will not overpower the pairing. Probably one of the best beers to have with red meat, especially a med-rare steak. Beer looks great in a glass, and not overly sour or tart. COTU hit a home run with this beer.

Had this as a side-by-side tasting with aleworks drake tail, and devils backbone 8 point to determine what the best IPA available in virginia is. Hands down COTU has stepped up and taken the crown imo. More malt backbone than the db, but not as much as the aleworks, well blended with plenty of hoppy bitterness. A must try for those looking for a good beer in RVA outside of Hardywood. Cheers

Draft. Pours orange amber color with minimal head. Smells of citrus and mild dry hops. Little to no smell actually. Taste is citrus with some malts and dry hop bitterness but not much. Pretty mild and uneventful. Decent and drinkable but nothing remarkable.

recieved in a trade, so thanks to jvhbass for this one. was hoping for one a bit more fresh, this one has the "A" marked on its label, so its potentially 3ish months old...oh well I guess. Here goes anyways. 22 oz bomber poured into a central waters snifter.

a- fairly aggressive pour leads to two inches of huge fluffy thick white foam that falls after a minute or two. color is a hazy burnt orange. on the darker end of the spectrum for an ipa, but a very nice looking beer.

s- as i might expect from a slightly older ipa, the hops seem muted and there is a bit more malty caramel sweetness. some tropical fruit of mango there along with some pine tree sprucey bitterness

t- again, this isnt as fresh as it could be, but the hops are really muted for the style. there is a little hop bitterness right away, then fades into the more malty backbone. a little sweetness and then a bit more malty sweetness.

m- very drinkable. just a tad oily on the tongue, but i dont mind that. drinks like an ipa should.

this one dissapointed me, and its very apparent that this bottle is past its freshness. Hopefully I can get my hands on some fresh stuff, because it seems to have potential when fresh. until then, it gets a mediocre review from me. if anyone wants to send me some fresh stuff, i would be happy to review again.

A: A medium pour serves up a hazey golden liquid with a cream colored two finger head that slowly settles leaving heavy lacing behind.

S: Aromas of pine, citrus and light grain

T: Taste of pine grapefruit, spice and toasted malt with a lingering bitter finish.

M: Has a light to medium body, oily with a resinous aftertaste.

O: Overall a decent beer, a definate hit on 3 of the 5 but i think I was hoping for a little more after seeing the pour and the nice bouquet.

Thanks to mojiboo02 for this extra.

Pours a dark amber pine color, nice head but isn't super thick and doesn't stick around very long.

Smells of power hop, grapefruit and orange and other bitter citrus, strong spicy character. Very nice aroma but not brutally strong.

Taste is even more bitter than suggested, very strong hops up front, some flor characters, grapefruit again but less citrus overall. Strong spice character again. Some maltiness in the finish but this is dominated by hops.

Mouthfeel is strong, good carbonation and good drinkability.

A really nice IPA, very strong hops but still very drinkable and refreshing.

A: Very IPA-like. Bright amber body with tight, thick white bubbles crowing it. The bubbles poured a couple fingers and are slowly dissipating leaving a mossy lacing.

S: Fruit juice, tropical fruits, hop resin, pine. All the C-hop goods.

T: Sharp, very bitter. I get tobacco. Nowhere near as much fruity and citrus hops as the nose. Interesting beer. I like the nose more than the taste.

M: Thin to medium. Lively on the tongue.

Poured a copper body with minimal head and little lacing. Aroma is mostly bitter citric hops. While the beer is light bodied, it is more ragged and crisp as this is a more bitter, citric and dry hopped beer (earthy, grainy, dirty) that finishes with a dry crisp. Just a little offbalance for me, I wish there was a bit more malt presence to add backbone and possibly some other hop to take a bit edge off. Not bad, but I won't be picking up another bomber anytime soon.

On tap at the winkel.

Strong citrus scent from a hazy choppy foamy brew.

Strong hops- light backbone. Burnt orange flavors, sour in the finish, lingering hoppy aftertaste.

The hophead in me keeps sipping, but really not much more than an overhopped brew.

A: Looks beautiful in the glass. Exactly what you'd want in an IPA. Burnt orange and very clear.

S: Smells of grapefruit and citrus. Doesn't knock you over the head but doesn't disappoint either.

T: Citrus and pine notes, resiny with a very bitter hop presence. Could use a bit more malt to balance out the bitterness but this is a very minor complaint.

M: Average.

O: I was disappointed with their Ray Ray's Pale Ale but this one makes up for it. It's a very good IPA which hits all the right notes in what an IPA should be. Nice job here.

Pours a beautiful hazy burnt orange with off white one finger head. Slight lacing as I drink it.

Lots of citrus and pine on the nose. Smells like some fruit juice (that stuff from the big cans when I was little... juicy juice?) and resin. It 's a good smell though. Not as strong as I'd like.

This one is bitter. Very hop forward. Lots of grapefruit with little citrus. Very nice lingering bitterness. Not too malty but it's there.

Decent amount of carbonation. It's a good light/medium body.

Overall, this is a very good beer. My first from COTU. Very hoppy and bitter, just the way I like my IPAs. I'll definitely be trying to get more stuff from them.
