A - The deep cranberry colors shocked the spouse. This was lively and crystal clean - with a 1 inch sandy head and wonderful lacing.

S - Bread, grains, flowers. Bottle says Virginia Ale, website says altbier, smell says pilsner.

T - Follows the nose - adding a sour malt flavor. Crisp, bitter, and quite dry on the finish stealing away any caramel sweetness.

M - Medium body. Medium carbonation. Well crafted.

Would have preferred some more caramel malt presence, something to take it away from a pilsner. But this is well built, smooth, clean and refreshing. Maybe something for a warm summer day in central VA.

22oz brown bomber with no freshness date.

Deep amber, bubbly, clear with a good looking lace on top. Dried grass, digestive biscuits, lemon pith, faint taffy and yeast in the nose. Very smooth, moderate sized body with just enough crispness. Good malt backbone, biscuity, grassy, and grainy from the malt with peppery and herbal notes from the hops. Ample bitterness. Nutty yeast and a mild warmth from the alcohol.

Without a doubt a good go at the style, a tough one to brew as the the flavor profile is so damn narrow. COTU hits all of the bells and whistles, a bit cleaner and honed in it would rival some of the best in Germany.

Big thanks to ZachKelly for sending this can down as an extra in our trade. Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. can into a Cigar City pint glass.

A: Deep copper-amber in color, nearly completely clear, with a thin white head and lots of visible carbonation.

S: Rich bready malts, and just a slight lager yeastiness - a clean, lager low amount of aroma.

T: Bready malts, with mild toasting but no real caramel character, and a significant grassy and floral hop bitter punch in the middle that I'm completely missing in the nose. Clean lager flavors, no sulfur or fruity esters at all. Malty sweetness fades into the hop bitterness after the swallow with just enough citrus rind character to make me think it's not just noble hops.

M: Medium to full-bodied for the style, good carbonation sensation, and minimal alcohol presence.

O: I've only had a few other altbiers, but this one was particularly enjoyable. The hoppiness seems likely to be out of the strictest style guidelines, but definitely added some nice character to the beer. Really digging this - would love to have this in cans hanging around shelves.

Appearance - cloudy amber. Uninviting.

Smell - none detectable. I kept trying. Nothing. I had my nose literally in the glass at one point.

Taste - Bitter brown beer. A bit of grass and perhaps lemony tartness. Bitter. No floral character at all. Malt nearly undetectable.

Overall - The only reason I didnt send this back was out of respect for the person at the table who recommended it. Waitress told me it was a local IPA. Will definitely not recommend or repeat.

I wonder seriously if its a bad batch, or just not my style. I have had a lot of local stinkers lately.

12 oz can poured into a stemmed glass. "In orbit" on 01/08/15, smooth, malty alt.

Shared by maniac. The beer is clear and light golden with minimal head. The aroma brings light citrus, biscuits, malt. Smells ok. Flavor is mediocre. Light bodied and pretty bland. Bread and rye notes with mild sweetness. Eh... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
