This year's trek to Cooperstown was considerably more adventurous than last year's scenic solo run. Yeah, huh. Set out with some good like-minded folks in the late morning, with the understanding that we were going to do the up and around via Albany (stopping to check on Jay's partially assembled '68 Camaro in Cobleskill; good comedy but a terribly scary backwoods time) on the way out to Cooperstown and cut across the mountain for some fact finding on the way back. As usual, we were making good time on the road. We had quickly grown parched and as I was put in charge of "provisions" anyway, stopping off at Oliver's along the Albany corridor was not met with any objections...

Hey!! Easy access off the slightly absurdly out of the way 787 to 90 loop. Warehousey, but the best beer stores often are. The counter's front row center and then you're looking down a few aisles of beer. In the first aisle, shelves of Belgians to your left, some nice things there (Cantillon, De Ranke, Fantome, DuPont, Liefmans, De Dolle, St. B, the trappists, etc.), and English, German and imports otherwise. The center aisle holds all the American micros, the units sorted by state. New York State was very well represented with all the goods from end to end, and then regional New England, Jersey and PA. Beyond that, you've got Colorado, Oregon and Cali. Sixes, 22's and 750's, standards and seasonals. You can purchase single beers, and make your own six packs. The end aisle is macro and coolers housing enough of the micro collection to be able to grab a cold six or two of something good, which is excellent news as it's going to be a dry shitty ride to Cobleskill otherwise. Growler pours too, hooray!!

Not much in the way of service, a couple of guys just hanging around. Not like I need 'em anyway. Good beer store, damn good jerky too.

Incredible selection of beers and a helpful/knowledgeable staff. The quarter point demerit is for appearance, since the building and shelving seem pretty old and not attractive aesthetically. That being said, everything is well organized and easy to find. There is always a great variety on the growler taps, with something to suit everyone's needs. I make it a point to stop into Oliver's every time I'm in the Albany area.

This place is great. Knowledgeable and very helpful staff. But the real reason to stop by is the selection. I live in the dc area, which is only a couple states away, so I was skeptical that I'd find beers that aren't distributed in my area. I was wrong. I found so much stuff I had to put beers back to stay on budget (I was on my way back from Vermont so funds...and space in my car was limited) and still walked out with 18 different bombers and 6/4 packs.

Looks small from the outside. But once I walked in, I was surprised on how big it actually was. They have a lot of variety. A very good selection. The staff was pleasant and helpful. There is a growler station. Didn't notice the price for them though. Good selection on them also. Plenty of cooler space. Prices seemed standard. Will be going here again and again.

Doesn't look like much on the outside (or inside, really, kind of a dingy place) but a truly outstanding selection.

About 4 long aisles full of craft beer of all kinds. Not just the regular options either- I was able to snag some Even More Jesus, Allagash Curieux, and Peche Mortel, which I hadn't yet seen up to that point. The place is a bit disorganized, and a bit shabby cleanliness-wise, and has a old warehouse feel to it. That doesn't detract from the incredible selection.

Can't comment too much on service since I didn't receive any- nobody was walking around helping anybody with selections. The prices were in line with what I expect, not cheap, but not crazy. There's a growler station with about 10 tap lines.

Worth the stop, and better than its sister store Westmere Beverage.

*Edit
Went again, and the service was great. Very helpful when asked about when certain beers would be arriving. Changed the rating to 4.25

Work had me in the area this week so of course I checked out BA to see what was around Albany (I have never been to the area)

This place looks like an old style package goods type place from the outside and there is half a liquor store attached (I guess in NY the licenses are separate for beer and liquor).

First impression is sort of muted... and then you get in it... expansive couple of aisle of goodness. Great representation of regional brews (MA, upstate NY like middle ages!).

Not perfectly organized but who cares, it is easy enough to find tons of stuff. It is warehouse style and that works just fine, if you have a problem finding something you only need to open your eyes, nothing is hidden on these shelves.. they just can't! (when you go there you will see)

Tons of gems to be found for someone out of town..Middle Ages! yay and really odds end Bear Republic stuff and Midnight sun... I will be back on Friday and probably drop a few hundred on stuff to bring back home (PS: dropped $200 so not bad). It is about a 3 hour drive from home.... but you know what ? worth a road trip, stay up there for a night, there are tons of hotels and some pretty cool places on pearl st.

PS: went back a second time and dropped another hundy, I upped the vibe score as this time I saw much better employee interactions with customers. but to sum it up I will make it my business to stop in this store every time work has me in the area, great place.

Vibe: This store is like a small warehouse and isn't too far away from the Wolf Road/Albany Airport area. It's organized pretty well, with the closest aisle dedicated to imported beers, the middle aisle having domestic micros, and the far aisle having some singles, cases from other larger craft breweries (such as Saranac and Samuel Adams) and coolers. The store is well lit so its easy to see inside.

Quality: All of the beers were stored outside of sunlight. The place seemed to get a steady stream of customers coming in when I was there so I assume that the turnover was pretty good.

Service: The staff seemed quite friendly and made it a point to go around the store and ask customers if they had any questions.

Selection: The selection of beers was quite diverse and I was happy to come across beers from a couple of breweries that I haven't tried before. All of the shelves had labels below the beer with prices. They also had a special area set up for seasonal beers, which mostly consisted of pumpkin beers and Oktoberfests at the time of my visit.

Value: Prices for most of the seemed rather reasonable. A few of the beers carried hefty prices, but these were for limited releases.

It looks like a warehouse and feels disorganized, but the beers are lined up on shelves by state and brewery, so it's not too hard to find what you're looking for. Selection is quite impressive, but not complete. I haven't been to the sister store in Westmere to see if they fill in the gaps in Oliver's selection yet. The best part is the growler filling station, which gets some rare selections that you can't find in a bottle at quite reasonable prices (most range around the 10-12$ range for a growler fill). The staff pouring the growlers is careful to top them off (always appreciated).

I'm a bit spoiled, coming from Baltimore and being within walking distance of The Wine Source, but I have to say that Oliver's selection is outstanding. I can get beers here I have never seen before from all over the country, and the recommendations from the guys here have been fantastic. The growler station has some really interesting choices, from a dry-hopped cider to the unbottled Victory Mad King's Weiss.

It's not fancy, but when it comes to be this place is second-to-none. I highly recommend checking it out.

Who cares if the atmosphere is warehouse-ish, nobody comes to ask me if I need any help, or there are random cases of beer in really random places all over the store? The selection at Oliver's is completely unparalleled. The import section alone was phenomenal, and the domestics were excellent as well. Many companies that had proven elusive to me were found, including NEBCO, Crooked Stave, and Perennial. Decent growler selections, and completely reasonable prices throughout.

Great store.
