Samson was the house beer at a long gone but not forgotten dive bar in Chicago, Johnnie’s Lounge. The proprietor Ivan “John” Vrbetic stocked no other inports, and I credit him for kindling my love for Czech lagers.

I think this may be a re-brand of the same old beer they always made, without the “Budweiser” part for legal reasons. It seems a little more crisp now than I remember back in the mid 00’s.

Bright pale gold, two fingers of foam, minimal lacing. Aroma of grassy hop note with a light green bottle skunk initially that fades. Toasted grain husks and Malt-o-meal hot cereal.

Crisp and malty, cracker and cereal grain, slightly toasty, light grassy noble hop in the dry finish. Clean and light bodied, easy drinking. Overall the new & improved Samson is a little better than the old Samson.

Great Czech lager. But now it's 5.1% instead of original 4.7%.

Appearance: Pours a completely clear, medium golden color with a mild to moderate white head. SRM of 7. (3.75)

Aroma: Earthy and skunks malts upfront. Somewhat earthy, leathery and slightly buttery bread underneath. (3.75)

Flavor: Moderate flavors of pale malts and earthy buttery bread. Skunky in the middle with a clean finish. (4.00)

Feel: Medium-bodied, average carbonation. Finishes slightly flat and clean. (3.50)

Compared to Pilsner Urquell 4/2023: Pours similar, milder aromas. More earthy, skunky pale malts. Less lemon citrus and sweet buttery diacetyl.

Overall: A decent Czech Pilsner. Pale malts with a touch of earthy and buttery bread from the diacetyl. Green bottle so skunked a bit. Sort of drinks like a Heneiken in Czechs Pils format. Nice biscuit malt, grassy hops with a touch of spice/buttery note. (Rating: 3.88+)

500mL green bottle Batch NO: L2021314 (assumably 15 months old) poured into a shaker pint glass at fridge temp 4.7% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright light golden amber with off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and scattered bubbles. Leaves rings of lacing as you drink. The aroma is mostly skunky with a hint of sweet malt. The taste is semisweet pale malt with skunky grass and a sprinkling of orchard fruit. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. No diacetyl, but maybe the skunk obscures it. Overall, ok. Would definitely try from a can or keg. Purchased at room temperature off a well lit top shelf for what's worth.

So I bought 2 of these, because in Auchan, they looked like 2 different beers. One was called 1795, and one was called Samson. The 1795 says Samson nowhere. Yet they seem to be the same beer. Why were both next to each other on the shelf? 1 overall for sure. Anyway, let's check out the beer.

Looks amazing, perfect head and colour...though I'm fairly sure I will not taste much after 3 Belgian beers, and a French Triple. Aroma is soft, inviting, perfect for my mood now.

It tastes smooth, mega smooth. Not sweet, amazing dryness in the hops. I love this, it's amazing. I'm happy I bought 2. But 1 overall because they tried to scam me ; )

Pours a crystal clear bright gold color. Thick, full four finger whitehead forms on the beer. Head lingers, then dissolves, but retains a full thin layer of velvety foam on top of the beer. Aroma has notes of sweet bread, straw, a touch of minerality, grassy, spicy saaz hops, and some very light buttery notes. Its a very classic and traditional aroma for a bohemian lager. Most importantly, although its in a green bottle, there are no signs of skunking ... yet.

Taste follows the nose with notes of straw, sweet bread, hints of honey, a distinct minerality, all giving way to lovely spicy, herbal hops coming through on the back end. Although I got a bit of a buttery note on the nose I am not getting anything in that vein in the flavor profile. Also, again, no skunkiness in the profile. This is a delight and the profile is exactly what I would expect from a Czech pilsner - This holds its own with the best Czech pilsners I have had. Feel is crisp, lively, smooth, and buttery. Easy drinking - almost refreshing. Bright carbonation.

Overall an excellent Czech pilsner. The freshness of these bottles certainly helps, but even so, its an outstanding beer. This easily stands up with the my favorite examples of the style

Samson 1795 has a thick, white head and a clear, bubbly gold straw appearance, with sheet lacing. The aroma is of soda cracker and grass. The flavor is the same, with noble hop bitterness. Samson 1795 has a medium body and a dry finish.

330 ml green bottle, now available in Norway. Sold in brown bottles for the Czech home market. Golden colour, good to moderate head, little lacing. 1795 is another "budweiser" from the town of Budejovice / Budweis (= another Bohemian pilsener, for anyone else but Czech appellation fanatics) with a pleasant Saaz aroma, elements of flowers and grass. Flavour is clean tasting, smooth and soft with moderate but pleasant hops. Just a faint hint of "boiledness" in the background, but not enough to make it disturbing. A nice quaffing pils, not an orgasmic experience but certainly easy drinking.
