From BeerAdvocate Magazine #85 (Feb 2014):

Hay, Dark Sugar, Creamy

Light “psst” when we popped the cap; thin lacing barely covers this dark brew. Smells like a loaf of dark bread with a caramel lining. Smooth creamy body struggles a bit with the low level of carbonation. Big bread tones from start to finish throw suggestions of dried hay and treacle at the palate. Surprisingly dry finish from a sweet start. A standup dark lager that just needs a bit more carbonation.

Another Praga I had to try because of good conversation about Czech Dark Lagers.

Best by 08.30.13 on the label.

A -- Clear, deep chestnut color with a creamy tan head that settles to a nice cap, leaving good, sticky lacing.

S -- Sweet, bready malts with a touch of molasses giving a good impression of Pumpernickel.

T -- Same sweet breadiness in the flavor with a mild touch of roastiness at the finish. Some hop bitterness and lingering sweetness in the aftertaste.

M -- Mouthfeel is smooth and soft with a medium-heavy body.

O -- A very nice beer that's a cross between a Munich Dunkel and a Schwarzbier. I would love to sample this fresh at the source, it's the type of Dark Lager I love to find. (705 characters)

Thoroughly enjoyed from the bottle in a snifter. This most delicious Czech dark pours a dark brown cola color with a nice off white head that dissipates to a thin ring. An exceptional nose for a lager with notes of raisins, cola, dark malts, chocolate, and caramel. Flavors are sweet up front with chocolate and caramel blending nicely over a rich cola like flavor and dark fruits to the rear. Smooth creamy mouth feel finishes wet and sweet with a light crisp hop bite at the rear. Outstanding. A new favorite from the Czech republic.

Cheers! (549 characters)

On tap at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle, IL:

I have had this beer here several times, over the past few years, at this establishment. It appears to be one of the restaurants staple beers. The beer is a very nice, dark cola color that produced a very nice, thick, off-white head that is well retained. The beer has a lighter, sweet malt aroma, as does the taste, but the taste is certainly more full. The beer has a lighter feel to it. It is smooth and creamy and good to the last drop. This beer is really well done. I am a huge fan. (537 characters)

From the brewers of beloved Samson Cerny comes this new arrival to the market. Sampled a couple bottles to get a more solid feel for it. Best by date: "23.02.13" so it's fresh.

Poured into a tulip glass it has a reddish copper color that glints ruby in the light. Initial two finger head of creamy light tan foam that settles to a healthy skim on the surface. After the first couple sips the skim parts, and a healthy collar of lace is left behind.

Light molasses and sweetened coffee in the aroma, some toasted marshmallow and sweet grains and coarse yeast. Flavors are similarly lightly sweet, toasted grains, molasses and honeyed toast. Feels a bit thin but not out of place for the style. Easy to have several, certainly no chore to drink. Simple but tasty enough, worth trying. (784 characters)

Bottle purchased at Beers of the World in Henrietta, NY.

This one pours a fairly dark brown, with a half inch head, and basically no lacing.

This one smells like brown sugar, toasted bread, and very sweet caramel.

This is a pretty sweet dark lager, but it's nice anyway. Lots of brown sugar, molasses, and caramel, a little bit of raisin, and toasted bread. No real hop presence to speak of, this one is all malt all the time.

This is light bodied without being thin. The carbonation level is moderate.

Overall, not too bad, but nothing to write home about. (562 characters)

A: The beer is crystal clear dark mahogany red in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin tan head that quickly died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of sweet nutty and toasted malts are present in the nose along with some hints of molasses.
T: The overall taste is somewhat sweet and has flavors of nutty and toasted malts with some hints of burnt sugar and molasses.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer doesn't have a very complex taste, but it is rather easy to drink. (675 characters)

500ml bottle. Pokal glass. Brown color, very dark amber tints to the light. Beige tan froth, close crown & correct retention. Roasted, sweettish aromas & slightly hoppy notes. Some metallic odors. Sweet malty syrup flavors & cloying sensation. Light body. Moderate to high carbonation. Watery texture. Sweetish finish & slight earthy bitterness. Flat & boring. (360 characters)
