Served in a tumbler at Mundelein Brewfest 2014.

Heading to the good folks at Church Street to finally try out their doppelbock. It pours a clear midnight sienna topped by a finger or so of khaki foam. The nose comprises rich caramel, mild pumpernickel, light barley, a hint of cocoa powder, and a distinct vein of green apple. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some light dark fruits (mostly fig) and a stronger green apple character. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a mostly smooth feel. Overall, a nice doppelbock, though the fruity character is just too off-putting for me to truly enjoy things here.

I tried this at the brewery today. $5 for a 10 oz. serving. They tout this as a winter warmer as well as a doppelbock.

Dark ruby color - almost purple, it looks more like a wine than a beer. 1-finger white head that lasts awhile and leaves good lacing on the glass.

Nice fruity and malty smell.

Caramel sweetness with a lot of dark fruit flavors - mostly plums, grapes and dark cherries. Very subtle hop bitterness at just 18 IBU's, and finishes with a bit of warming alcohol.

Pretty full bodied with moderate carbonation.

This is a decent winter brew that uses dark fruits rather than a lot of spices to liven things up.
