Binny's - Bolingbrook

Batch #150

As the liquid falls from bottle to glass it shines ruby red. Darkening as the glass fills it becomes translucent crimson. The head is surprisingly active and bubbly, though short, rising to a half finger in height, with good stick-to-itiveness before falling to a shallow ring. The foam leaves behind a patch or two of foam here and there. This was poured into a Cantillon glass and they honestly look identical, Cantillon and this.

Raspberries pop from the get go. They're fresh and sweet upfront, seeds and all, before sequeing into slightly tart, underripe berries. There's more lactic tartness than anything adding some depth. A touch of mustiness plays on the periphery and soft florals are present with a little warming.

A little more funk carries through to the flavor profile in the form of wildflowers, pollen, and earthy undertones. The raspberries still dominate and have a nice brightness in the middle before falling off toward the finish. Earthiness lingers on the swallow. This is a good beer but the backend falls short, leaving almost no impression at all.

The mouthfeel fits the beer well, it's light bodied with a spritzy, effervescent tingliness along the tongue. The carbonation seems to awaken the tastebuds while a minor touch of tartness remains after the swallow. Highly drinkable and quenching.

Brett Frambois is a good beer from Lake Effect. It's much more like a toned down version of New Glarus's Raspberry Tart than it is Rose de Gambrinus. Keeping that in mind I'd buy this again. It's fruit driven, spritzy, drier than New Glarus fruit beers and a pretty good thirst quencher. For $8.99 it's certainly worth picking up.

Soft carbonation and a beautiful red hued foam on a glowing red body is a good start. The aroma is dry and full of raspberry. The taste as the same nice dry raspberry with some cooked corn qualities from the brett and some dry pale malt underneath. The flavor has a herbal dryness maybe coriander in the finish.

Although the fruit is nice there just isn't much to support it and the brett just doesn't offer much support.

750 ml bottle, with handwritten Batch #137 printed on the label. My first big bottle from the local Lake Effect Brewing Co., and their first endeavor into the world of sour beers. Not entirely sure what to expect with this one.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - Pours a very appealing bright ruby colored body with little over a finger of bubbly pinkish-white foam. Some nice bubbly lacing; looks very nice.

S - The smell is very pleasant also. Not quite as tart of sour as other examples of the style, and there isn't much brett or funk to be had, but the the fresh fruity raspberries come through wonderfully.

T - Taste follows the nose - fresh, lightly tart raspberries are the dominant feature. There is a bit of a yeasty bacterial dryness on the finish, but any real brettanomyces or funk character is pretty absent at this point.

M - The feel is fluid, smooth, lightly tart, and yeasty. Light-bodied with good carbonation.

Overall, a nice first effort at a sour beer from Lake Effect Brewing Co., but there is definitely room for improvement. Certainly a beer I'd be interested in having again, and I look forward to trying more from these guys.

Served in a Boulevard snifter tulip.

Seeing the overtly-reasonable price tag, I had to pull the trigger on this bottle. It pours a clear ruby topped by a finger or so of light pink foam. The nose comprises mild earthy raspberry, mild Brett funk, and a touch of dank mixed greens. The taste brings in more of the same, the berry and Brett complimenting each other well. In addition, neither flavor comes through very strongly, allowing for a surprisingly subtle mixture that usually bludgeons your tongue with funk, tartness, and fruit. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slightly drying finish. Overall, a really nice beer, one I look forward to enjoying again (especially given the lovely price point).
