Oh, Harlem. I so seldom get up to play; my nickel bag days being so long behind me and all. But I’m coming from and heading to through and have some time on my hands. I’ve always considered above 96th street a beer no man’s land, but 149th & Broadway, pushing the limits…

Parked front row center, there is good weekday midday parking, found the muni meter (love), fed and in. A single room split bar side/seating side. Slate Gray painted wall sections, brick play on the far wall wrapping to the rear, and a bit of wood, too. Concrete floorings and a black ceiling with framed corrugated pieces holding bi-spinny fans. Panel front windows shaded, with horizontal mirrors angled atop to both sides of the front door vestibule done up with ancient bottles in a variety of colors, shapes, & sizes above. Drop Bali mason jar single bulb lamps tracing the bar, mesh caged single bulb dangles over the adjacent bar counter seating, baby bulb on piping pieces on the bar back shelving illuminating, and on the far wall, track spots up front and mounted single filaments to the rear corner.

Set up at the concrete topped ‘L’ bar to the right, with a wood panel framed piece on inlayed blue painted base, and literally, piping foot rails; seating for a dozen on swivel stools beneath a wood framed overhang tracing the bar with a curvy corrugated piece. Barback on concrete counter, holding a row of 16 taps on center with round handles for the labeling chalkin’ onto. The tap box is fronted by a logo ‘Harlem Public’ face done in a 1" square subway style tiling mosaic. Horizontal 4 x 6 framed blackboard above lists tap selections (name, ABV, serving size, $). Flats mounted to both sides of the big board over shelved booze & bottled selections, on twisted piping held wood planks. Single shelf above and the blackboard lined below with 1L cobalt blue & 2L clear glass growlers. Center cooler below the bar with bottled selections and glassware shelved to both sides. Popcorn machine in the rear corner with bottles & steins atop.

A single bar counter table sits across the middle of the room hugging the support columns, and nearly a dozen tables on the far side, hightop tables forward sharing a length of bench, and shortys to the rear on wood benches off the corners. And a seasonal curbside seating pen; 5 tables with wood benches out there on an ‘L’.

In the front corner off the bar, they’ve got a ‘buy a drink for someone’ board, called ‘The Harlem Public Display & Affection”. Let me go see if my name is, no, it is not. A pair of flats on the far wall over all sorts of Harlemy pics, prints, & framed things of all sizes & shapes, and another mosaic tile logo piece and a corner wood stove to the rear.

I was in a few days after Fat Tuesday so the place was too Abita’d up to get a feel for what the tap list is normally like, but I drank a Bear Republic Racer Café 15 and a Gaffel Kolsch. My return visit the other day before a Memorial Day BBQ found a good mix up; ¼ of them imports big & small (De Proef Prearis Quadreupel, Chimay Tripel, Gaffel Kolsch, Guinness), and the other ¾ of them American craft/cider, split between nearish (Blue Point Blueberry Ale, River Horse Tripel Horse, Victory Summer Love, DogFishHead 90 Minute IPA, Smutty Old Brown Dog, Docs Hard Apple Cider, Peak Organic Pale Ale), and not (Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat, Founders Pale Ale, AleSmith IPA, Abita Turbodog, Uinta Wyld Extra Pale Ale). I drank Founders Pale Ale & Alesmith IPA (should have doubled down on the Founders Pale Ale). And a dozen + bottles, a smattering of thisandthat; craft, import, macro, & N/A (Chimay Red, Delirium Tremens, Guinness Black Lager, Lindemans Framboise, Sixpoint x3, Sugar Hill, Ithaca Apricot Wheat, Ommegang Witte, Keegans Mothers Milk, Stone 121212, Miller, Redbridge).

Food, uh huh. I ordered the Public Burger, a blend of chuck, short rib, & brisket, done medium rare, with NY state extra sharp cheddar, housemade brown sugar bacon, L, T, and yes, raw O if you’re holding. Naturally, I subbed tater tots for the hand cut fries. The burger jammed, served skewered to keep it from running off (it's not like I ordered it rare), and the tots were salty as balls, but awesome.

Tunes, they play, I hear them. And I watched the sad end to the Florida/UAB game (you know, thinking that you can score from 2nd base on an infield hit being fielded by the 2nd baseman makes you stupid. You deserve a long shitty ride home being chastised by your teammates for your elimination). Good comfortable place, with a mix of locals and hipster neighborhood newbies. Brady tending; he used to play at Finley’s, Bay Shore; sure, he knows his game. Local woman in for a tasting learning what’s what’s what; beer 101. Fresh flowers in Brooklyn Gin bottles on the bar and counters. I was dished a bowl of popcorn on arrival for the snacky snack (thank you). Nice folks and the best beer for dozens of blocks.
