A - Poured from can into stemmed porter glass. Hazy bronze, half inch of snow white head. Fades quickly, but leaves decent lacing.

S - Light cereal grains, not much hops.

T - Not much from the hops for an IPA. I get a little biscuit and cereal. I guess the hops do a good job of balancing out the malt, but not too much more.

M - Medium body, which is nice for a backyard IPA. Refreshing.

O - This was my first experience with Foolproof. I'm happy to have tried a beer from Rhody, but I wouldn't seek it out again. However I wouldn't be averse to trying one of their other offerings.

Picked up a six pack of Foolproof "sampler" - 2 porters, 2 goldens, and 2 of these extremely tasty IPA's. It's not going to put RI on the "IPA highway" but it doesn't set out to either. Very smooth, more floral than hoppy (though plenty of both) which adds to its drink ability. I'll always compare this to Newburyport IPA, which I think is the bigger hit for a hop fix, but Foolproof certainly has its place. Would definitely try more by this brewery, they nailed exactly what they tried for.

Poured from a can into a shaker pint, the beer is a bright, slightly hazed, yellow-gold coloring with a steady flow of carbonation and a thin, filmy, clingy, bright white head. Nose of floral hops, with a slight peppery bitterness, caramel sweetness, and a subtle bitterness. Flavors are bitter forward, with a resiny and piney blending and subtle tangy sweet backbone. Very well balanced, with a good punch from the bitter and spiced hops presence. Light, effervescent body with a slightly bitter, crisp, dry finish. Aftertaste of roast, subtle sweet, and resiny bitterness. Solid, easy drinker that is well balanced.

A: Poured out a small amount from the can. It was a slightly hazy golden amber color with off white head. There was low retention on the head and some spotty lacing.

S: Grapefruit and a semi dank pine. Herbal and floral hop notes shine through over a noticeably sweet caramel malt body. There are also hints of booze and spice.

T: The nose pretty much sums it up, but there is more of a pronounced floral and herbal flavor. Finish is a little spicy and bitter.

M: This one seems a bit thinner than most IPAs and the carbonation is a little lighter as well. It does seem to be quite a bit sticky though.

O: Very good. Lives up to the "Backyahd" name. This one would be great for sessioning for an occasion like a barbecue.

Appearance: Perfectly clear dark yellow-gold. Small bright-white head drops to a faint cap and slightly larger collar. Spots of oily lacing.

Smell: Very faint bitterness with an herbal and floral hop note. Touches of citrus over a slightly toasted and sweet malt base. Bready with some caramelized malt sweetness. Light bready pale malts. Slight hop spiciness as well. Nicely balanced. Apple skin.

Taste: Slight hop and alcohol spiciness. Juicy hints of citrus. Deeply floral with a small herbal element. Malts are nice and light with a toasted bread crust. Slightly sweet and biscuity with a solid, but not bracing, bitterness. Balance persists.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with a moderate carbonation. Juicy/wet on the beginning of this sip. Nice and smooth with a slightly dry finish.

Overall: A staple for any barbecue in New England.

A nice easy drinking IPA with a solid bitterness. Killing six of these would be easy, but the hop profile might get a little tiresome around number 4.
