Fills the glass with a nice dark black looking body but requires a rather aggressive pour to yield much head. Pretty standard as far as porters go.

Rich chocolate and roasty espresso notes come through nicely on top of an underlying toasted bread character and just a hint of earthy hops.

As expected, the roasty dark malts do most of the talking here. Bittersweet to a point with a nice fresh coffee flavor and some delicate chocolate notes. Subtly balanced by the hops. Not quite as robust as some but pleasant nonetheless.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side for a robust porter, but it makes for an easy drinker. Overall, not quite as in-your-face as some porters can be (i.e. Smuttynose, Founders) but still an enjoyable drink on a cloudy/rainy day.

Can, no date poured into a shaker pint.

A: Dark porter black with some ruby color around the bottom of the glass, thick frothy khaki head, huge chunks of lace left after each sip.

S: Roasted barley, some coffee and cream, has the standard mocha/cocoa thing goin on as well, smells nice and inviting.

T: Roasted malt, mocha/cocoa, some black coffee/espresso, touch of vanilla and black chocolate. Tasty stuff.

M: Medium bodied, very smooth brew, creamy feel. Carbonation is low and about right for the style.

O: Perhaps not as good as some of my personal top New England Porter favorites in Smuttynose Robust and Mayflower Porter, but definitely a very solid execution of the style by Foolproof. Similar to Baxter Phantom Punch albiet not a porter but the two are similar. But I prefer this one. Nicely done.

Appearance: Poured nearly black into a belgian chalice, with a two finger tan head that sticks around for a bit. Leaves lacing sticking to the sides of the glass as I sip.

Smell: Roasted barley, a little bit of smokiness, and also beautiful hints of bittersweet chocolate and a bit of mocha/coffee. Very appealing aroma and typical of the style.

Taste: Chocolate, a bit of the smoke that I caught in the aroma and some mocha as well. Can taste the sweetness from the malt and roasted barley.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with decent carbonation in a beer that goes down smooth. Nothing overpowering with a very smooth taste and creamy finish.

Overall: This is a very, very solid robust porter from Foolproof and my favorite of their core offerings. I can drink this year-round and it is definitely worth a try if you can get your hands on it.

Raincloud Robust Porter
12 oz can
Served in a 20 oz tulip glass

I picked up a 6 pack of Foolproof Porter on a whim last month while visiting Providence, RI. I noticed it was a locally produced beer and decided to give it a try.

Pours a jet ink black, opaque in appearance with a nice khaki colored head on top. Awesome trails of sticky lacings form on the side of the glassware.

Whiffs of a smokey fire, chocolate and percolating coffee.

The mouthfeel is rich, chewy and slick with a monster malt profile that provides flavors of liquid smoke, dark chocolate and caramel sweetness. I also a detect roasted malts with every sip, reminiscent of a quality espresso. There is an element of sweetness here too, perhaps a hint of lactose or sugar. The finish has a biting hop snap.

A really smooth and flavorful porter, which is probably my favorite style of beer.

This was a gift at the brewery to The CANQuest (TM) back in February when I visited on my way to the Inaugural RI Brew Fest at the Pawtucket Armory. I had to await approval of my picture as I only had the one CAN and I dislike pictures of spent beers.

From the CAN: "It's pouring outside, so pour yourself something inside ..."; "Raincloud is the perfect 'stay at home' brew. Dark, smooth, mysterious - this rich and flavorful porter is brewed with chocolate and crystal malts and a subtle blend of European hops. Raincloud is the ideal accompaniment for a lazy day of movie watching or reading."; "Your Life. Your Beer."; "Experience Responsibly".

The Crack revealed that this CAN was not as full as its brother, but I went with an inverted Glug all the same. Once the cascade began to settle, I had a dense finger of foamy, deep-brown head with excellent retention. The beer looked like a glass of ink! Dark? ZERO light penetration! None anywhere, not even on the sides or at the edges. It must have been a deep, dark-brown but all I could see was blackness. The smell was smoky, liquified dark chocolate and my mouth began to water. Mouthfeel was full and the richness of the chocolate made it feel as though I were drinking a milkshake. A really smoky chocolate milkshake! The lacing that had begun to manifest itself was going to require a jackhammer to remove. Finish was dry, very smoky, very much dark chocolate, but the wee yeasties had done their job and there was no sweetness remaining from the malt. It is not raining today, but I do have a book that I am reading (Irvine Welsh's latest - "Skagboys") so I think that I will take the brewery's advice and return to it.
