Bomber into a snifter. Let's call that SOP, am I right? Gorgeous black body and one hell of a head, three fingers worth. The carbonation in this stout is prevalent.

I get chocolate milk in the nose, some hints of vanilla. Not the best smelling stout I've ever had, but serviceable.

Taste is pretty hoppy for an imperial stout. Reminiscent of Founders, but not as good. I do get a bit of bitter dark chocolate.

Carbonation overload as it swirls around my mouth. I like smoother stouts, but this one works as it's delivery is crisp and dry.

I'm glad I bought this on a whim. The fine folk of New England have a worthy imperial stout to warm up with in the winter.

A: Pours a thick black color with a one finger mocha head that dissipates slowly to a lacing around the edge of the glass and small patch in the middle.

S: Aroma is a little underwhelming, not a whole lot going one, there is some mocha and malts, a little bit of coffee, but little else.

T: Taste is similar to the nose, notes of chocolate, dark roasted malts, and some coffee. There's a little bitterness on the back end, but not too much.

M: A little hoppier than one would expect for a RIS, but it is managable, not too thick, medium body, low carbonation.

O: Overall, not as good as other Russian Imperial Stouts, decent, but not great.

22oz bottle. Bottled in November 2013. Pours a black viscous color with an inch of brown head. Some lacing. The aroma is dark chocolate, vanilla, earth, smoke and booze. The taste is smokey malts with some dark chocolate. Charcoal, earth, and booze. Lots of roasted malts and smoke flavor. Earthy, boozey finish with more smoke and some espresso. Thick mouthfeel with a lot of carbonation. Reminds me a bit of their Porter. Overall, solid brew I would grab once in a while.

Dark viscous black with a dark caramel buttercream head. Smells like VOCs from a fresh can of paint. Tastes...vacant. There's a huge mouthfeel with very little roast malt flavor. Too much flaked oats and roasted barley make this RIS like a giant body over flavor Irish Dry Stout.

I'd either dump this recipe or dump it in some bourbon barrels.

Bottled in November 2013.

Color is very dark black with a brown head that has thin lacing that fades quickly.

The smell isn't as strong as I expected. I get plenty of roasted coffee, some chocolate, and I think It's got a rather forward "malty" smell that could be considered oat-like.

The mouthfeel is on the higher side of medium, with some decent carbonation, but not really heavy. It's going down rather quickly.

Overall, this brew is very tasty. It goes down smooth and still has a bitterness that's pleasing to the palate. Even at 10% + ABV, the alcohol is hidden very well, which is dangerous. It's changing quite nicely as it warms. More roasted flavors and bitterness peak out as it warms. It's definitely worth a try and a second try.

Oooh, a RIS from Damase, can't wait to see how it is, and if I should cellar a couple bottles.

Pours a super dark inky pitch black beer that forms a small fizzy slight fluffy but rich black head covering, bit of lacing and bit of legs too.

Nose brings some dark malts, a big fluffy center with a nougat like aroma (thanks to the carafa I think), some chocolate candy bar with caramel and more caramel, varying levels of crystal malts that is, a mild roasty aroma with some dark chocolate, little biscuity like dark malt, and creamy oats, bit of a luscious chocolate. Touch of and earthy spicy almost fruity like hop.

Taste comes on heavy, thick and rich, and creamy too. Lots of dark malts, a little roast without acrid at least, hint of coffee with the roast, into dark chocolate, little creamy luscious chocolate and malting cocoa. Then into caramel again, and that nice chewy fluffy nougat center, chocolate nougat candy bar like, and mild biscuity malted milk ball. The bit of dark chocolate turns melty and creamy as the oats come through nicely. More mild earthy hops turn slightly spicy as it goes, but not very bitter, A hint of warming booze eventually catches up as it warms and the more I swirl it around my mouth. Finish dries a bit but leaves a little sticky feel and mouth coating, hops really kick up a couple notches and get quite spicy and chewy, and quite bitter, like I just chewed a hop pellet and it's lingering in my mouth for a while, a little more booze coming with the hops, and bit of cocoa and caramel lingering. The super spicy hops get a little much the more I go, so another reason to lay it down for a while to age.

Mouth is heavier fuller bod, a bit creamy and luscious, mild warming booze that ramps a bit as it warms, carbonation is on the lighter side but not bad for the style.

Overall not bad, nice combination of dark malts, roasty and carafa like fluffy feel without being too acrid or heavy roast, hops come on nicely but get a little too bitter on the finish, nice caramel layers, and booze is a bit on the heavy side eventually, so it will be nice to age a couple bottles of this. Reminds me of Night Stalker.

From the 650 ml. bottle dated November 2013. Sampled January 11, 2014.

It pours a deep black color with a lingering tan head. Some lacing as it fades.

On the nose there are many interesting characteristics underway. I get dark malts, chocolate, cocoa, and even a touch of oats.

The body is mainly in the medium range but it is pretty smooth overall.

The taste has some similarities to the aroma but the difference is that there is a certain bitter bite attacking the palate at the end. At 10.7% ABV there is little to no boozy character but the bitterness does have a bite. A nice Impy Stout.
