We put together an insane malt bill for Revery – two row, Crystal 40, Carafa, roasted barley, chocolate malt, and flaked oats combine to make Revery incredibly smooth and rich while boasting a high alcohol content. Had on tap. Pours opaque, dark brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is coffee, roasted malt, slight vanilla, and a moderate amount of hops. More hops than I have been having in this style lately. Complex and interesting brew. This may be the first Foolproof beer that I really like. There are better RISs out there, but this one is solid and worth a try.

Wow, it looked like motor oil coming out of the can. Black! And it remains that way in the glass. Yes, there's a brown tinge to it, but it's also opaque. A frothy dark tan head tops it, and holds quite well. Widely broken sheets are left about the glass as it goes.

The aroma expresses dark malt, a coffee-like roastiness, and hints of dark and medium dark chocolate and golden caramel.

It's not a bold aroma, but it's pretty full, until you taste it and know what full really means! It's rich and malty with everything that the aroma suggests and more: black bread, soft molasses, herbs, brown sugar, cocoa, a spritz of alcohol, ashen roastiness (some might call it lightly smoky), tobacco, and dry leather. Some floral and herbal, perhaps even spicy, hops make it through as well, and there's even a touch of underlying fruitiness (apple, red grape/raisin, berries). A solid bitterness backs it, and it's balanced and finishes dry with lingering notes of all of the above at certain points.

In the mouth it's full bodied, and creamy and smooth once the gentle tingle of carbonation has passed.

Impressive. A nicely done Russian Imperial that in general sticks to traditional ingredients rather than wandering off. As it's currently spring and this is a winter beer I'd imagine that it was packaged sometime in fall of 2015 which would give it about 9 month of aging which has probably made a difference.

From the 650 ml. bottle dated November 2013. Sampled January 11, 2014.

It pours a deep black color with a lingering tan head. Some lacing as it fades.

On the nose there are many interesting characteristics underway. I get dark malts, chocolate, cocoa, and even a touch of oats.

The body is mainly in the medium range but it is pretty smooth overall.

The taste has some similarities to the aroma but the difference is that there is a certain bitter bite attacking the palate at the end. At 10.7% ABV there is little to no boozy character but the bitterness does have a bite. A nice Impy Stout.
