La Ferme Urbaine opens to a nice sweet, musty farmhouse ale aroma, smelling like fermented apple cider, hay, pepper, and a Belgian banana-and-clove mix, with lesser notes of white grape, lemon, and pink grapefruit. An earthy base of brown bread, toast crust, biscuit, and yeasty rising whole wheat dough brings balance. Touches of orange and berry fruit esters, as well as brown sugar and hints of vanilla, add further sweetness and nuance. As a whole, the nose is nicely balanced and strong, the sugars being especially aromatic, lacking mainly in a sense of distinction from its rivals, the aromas fairly standard for the style.

On the tongue, the beer is part Belgian, with bananas and cloves immediately noticeable, and part spiced and fermented apple cider, with small touches of sour vinegar. The pepperiness of the brew is instantly notable, burning the tongue and soft palate. Also noticeable are the citrusy fruits, with oranges, lemons, and tart pink grapefruit biting away. Cracker, toast, and whole wheat dough add a nice base. In subsequent sips some of the initial nuance is lost, and a vague hop-and-wheat taste overtakes much of the flavor palate. The latter portion of the mouthful becomes quite sour and vinegary in comparison to the earlier portion, and this sourness dominates the aftertaste, lingering on the tongue for a long time. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium to medium-high, fizzing up on the tongue.

Overall, this is a decent farmhouse ale, but lacks a sense of distinction, and the extra sour/vinegary aftertaste is slightly unsettling.

Consumed 6/3/14

Appearance: Mostly clear, lightly hazy, deep gold with some honey - pours with a large head, retains a mostly solid cap, thick collar, and leaves some nice spots of lacing

Smell: Grains, light bread, light fruits, and a touch of funk - interesting array of malty and grainy aromas, including pale grains, wheat, light bread, barely cooked biscuits, and some hints of caramel grains and rye - lightly funky Belgian yeast with some farmhouse funk, clove, banana, and bubblegum - some malty sweetness, sugar, apples, grapes, and pears - pepper and more sweetness

Taste: Definitely interesting, even if I usually prefer my saisons to be dryer - nice complexity in the malts, with some pale and caramel grains, wheat, rye, and oats - decidedly bready; quite literally like a multigrain bread - some funky Belgian yeast, with some funk, clove, banana, bubblegum, and more pepper than in the aroma - floral aspects - lightly tart green apple, pear, and white grapes - finishes with some sweetness and maybe a touch of alcohol

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, finishes wet and spicy

Overall: Pawtucket, the farmhouse of Rhode Island (???)

This was more interesting than expected. It's a bit on the sweet side, but the complexity of the malt profile kind of makes up for it. At the very least, this serves as a strong reminder that I need to actually tour this brewery before I move out of RI.

Pours a clean looking golden color, small to medium sized fizzy head off a vigorous pour, fades quickly and leaves no lacing on the glass.

Smell is dominantly sweet malt in aroma, not much funk or spiciness that's hitting the nose for a farmhouse, pretty straightforward except for a decent sized yeasty whiff.

Taste starts out with a fairly sweet malt start, touches of light fruit like lemon and even some orange zest, yeasty aftertaste, finishes semi-dry with a a slight lingering tartness, carbonation is high but appropriate.
