Looks like straight up grapefruit juice. Nose is entirely raspberries. Very boozy. Not as overpowering as Blushing Monk, but still packs a wallop. Worth trying if you find it, but not worth seeking out.

I wasn't thrilled with this beer compared to many of the other Prarie Artisnal offerings.

Some raspberry smell but very minor. Medium carbonation in the feel. Very pricey, so limited value vs the taste.

Honestly, I picked up this bottle because it was 50 % off. I'm not a huge fan of sours, and this one definitely leaves a bitterness on your tongue. It's like chilled wine with low carbonation, an interesting hybrid of texture and class.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip to a deep gold with a slight reddish hue topped by a dense two finger white head which retains well and leaves decent lacing
S: Smells of huge notes of bretty funk and horseblanket with a little raspberry
T: Taste is raspberries, horseblanket, funk, and barnyard along with some cracker like malt and white pepper. Hints of lemon and slight acidity as well. Swallow is raspberries and more funk with lingering horseblanket and spicy yeast
M: This beer has a body that is on the lighter side of things but it is not watery. Carbonation is effervescent and just below being prickly while the beer has a slightly drying finish.
O: Overall this one is pretty good. The raspberries add a nice note to a fairly well executed saison. This one has good flavors and complexity as well which makes it an interesting drink. It would be nice to see this one come back as a rotating offering.

Pours a slightly hazy reddish amber hue with bits of debris tumbling about in the vigorous carbonation. The head is immediately massive and drops slowly as a lumpy foam covering. Raspberries and wood in the nose. Berry quality is muted in the flavor with a damp woody, earthen spice . Medium-light frothy dry feel. Pretty okay...

BOTTLE: 1 pint .9 fl oz format. Brown glass. Pry-off crown cap. Comic book style label art. Distributed by the Shelton Bastards.

8.4% ABV. "Farmhouse ale brewed with raspberries."

APPEARANCE: Gushes upon opening and the resultant head fills ~90% of the glass, heavily indicating overcarbonation. Head is off-white, soft, and somewhat creamy. Lasts a good ~10+ minutes.

Body is a dark orange of average vibrance. No yeasts/lees are visible within. Fairly clean looking for a farmhouse ale, lacking any hazy, murky, or cloudy characteristics. I did expect more of a reddish body colour given the utilization of raspberries as an additive, but it's generally appealing for the intended style and I'm looking forward to trying it in spite of its seeming overcarbonation.

AROMA: Fresh raspberry can't be missed; it's vivid. Neutral pale malts lend it some sweetness. Peach. Apricot. Fruity esters and fruity hop aromatics are evident. Suggests a luscious fruit-emphatic brew, but aside from some general Belgian ale yeast mustiness I'm not getting much aromatically that would indicate a farmhouse ale...no overt funky brettanomyces yeast(s), no Fantome-like intricate spice, no barnyard grassy or hay-like aromatics, no microflora.

Nevertheless, it's a pleasant aroma, suggesting a soft delicate fruited ale with obvious Belgian leanings (particularly in terms of yeasty nuance).

Aromatic intensity is average to above average for the style.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Mellow - surprisingly so for a ~8.4% ABV beer. Soft fruity flavours (raspberry, obviously, along with pear, peach, and apricot) blend with neutral Belgian blonde/pale malts to good effect. Its soft texture cushions the fruity flavours nicely, resulting in an approachable brew that never betrays its high ABV...this is dangerous.

Belgian ale yeast esters lend this some subtlety, but I don't find any overt brettanomyces funkiness, barnyard characteristics, or microflora flavour. It could be more intricate, but it's pretty well balanced as-is. It would do well with more tartness and twang, but I like the fruity flavours and they work well with the Belgian yeast. A stand-out flavour is the subtle pink peppercorn spritzing up the otherwise straightforward build.

It's a bit dry but not so much that it's unrefreshing. Tingly and a bit coarse on the palate. I'd prefer it softer and creamier, if we're nitpicking. I'm shocked it isn't more warm from the alcohol.

Not gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, or oily. I find no off-flavours.

OVERALL: Breweries tend to do something special for their anniversary beers, but if you're hoping for a beer that exceeds the quality of Prairie's regular offerings, you're in for disappointment. Prairie has joined the ranks of Lost Abbey and Ommegang in terms of brewing true-to-style farmhouse ales in recent years, but this stab at the style doesn't best their better priced more widely available year round expressions thereof. The raspberry is nice enough and its softness is a highlight, but the fundamentals of the farmhouse ale style just plain aren't in place.

I wouldn't pay Shelton Bastards prices for another bottle, but it's a solid fruited ale and I'll enjoy finishing it even if it doesn't rival the best beers in either the intended style or in Prairie's repertoire.

Poured into nonic pint. Active pinkwhite head that mellows out, but fizzes throughout. Color like pure applejuice.

Berry nose with yeast.

Taste: Tart fruit flavors of berries, lemon and other citrus. A little unbalanced, but intriguing.

Lively carb mouth, almost sudsy.

In all, a decent fruity saison, though not the most balanced in flavor. You're not likely to find many more of these, since it was brewed once over a year ago.

Looks great.... all zest and fizz over a pale pink body
And then.... what do you get of you take a base saison with all its lemon base and zestiness and chuck a whole heap of sweet-ish raspberries in it?
Yep, something great in the sum of it's parts, but, erm.....
It really does taste like a saison with raspberries in it it.... not really a Good Thing

No label information. Brewed in the style of a Saison ale brewed with Raspberries. Available in 500ml. bottles and on limited draft. Third anniversary ale release.

Pours from a 500ml. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a crispy foam off white head with a soft pink hue over a medium hazy caramel body with aggressive carbonation. Retention is above average and lacing is light and patchy. 3.75

(Smell) Pale and dry wheat malts, white peppercorns, delicate raspberry puree over lightly sour fruit juices. Aroma is fairly dry but potent. 3.75

(Taste) Flavor is fairly similar to the aroma, with delicate raspberry puree atop pale and wheat malt base leading the aroma, with delicate spicy peppercorn and spicy fruit finish. Less tartness than the aroma suggested, although the finished product is nicely balanced with a reasonable sweetness. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly chewy, frothy, medium dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a lightly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, medium overall. Balance is nearly even sweet to peppery spice and acidity. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 4.25

(Overall) A nicely flavored raspberry-infused saison that preserves nicely the mid range of raspberry flavor, complimenting a simple but effective malt body. Solid and enjoyable. 3.75
