Funky Gold Simcoe is a dry-hopped sour ale. We took Prairie Gold and dry-hopped it with a huge amount of Simcoe hops. The end results are tropical, sour, and an all around new beer drinking experience! This beer is great fresh, but will continue to develop as the wild yeast continues to work in the beer.

I love the funky sours and Prairie does them better than almost anyone by what I've had of theirs. I think my bottle is from Feb '16 although deciphering their numbering on the bottle is not a sure thing. I wonder if it has more of the funk flavor given that it was a shelf turd where I bought it. It has a nice head due to higher carbonation than a typical IPA. The smell is wonderfully funky awful. It's like a typical Red line stop on the Chicago El, but I love it in my beer! The taste is complex and with a dry finish. It has a feel carbonation wise almost like a champagne. Overall I wouldn't pass this up if you know you love your brett beers.

Freak freak da funk da funk da funk freak da funk da FUNK fuuuuunk! Yes. It's about how you FREAK the FUNK. And this is what it's all about.
Prairie has THE BEST wild yeast and Brett ever. Point blank. Theit yeast is so unique and so much of a trademark that I could recognize it without knowing it, hands down. And this yeast is what brings the FUNK into these wild ales, farmhouse ales, sour ales. That fizzy, smelly, tart, sour feeling that makes you think: What did they put into the brew?
This one in particular smelled like horse piss, half-rotten straw or dirty, wet socks. But it is amazing! That is why it is so amazing! Because it creates such a living feeling that you can't be unaffected by. And it's taste... I don't even want to know what went into it. It is simple mastery to create such an interesting, exciting, refreshing, alluring and disgusting, strange and yet amiable thing that you simply can't do without. And you keep wanting more. Keep wanting to return to Prairie to try more and more of their wonderful ales. And I think it's because of that funk. And Prairie knows best how to freak it.

Serving: 500 mL bottle poured into a Riedel Vinum Zinfandel glass.

Appearance: Hazy, golden straw yellow with a towering head of frothy white foam; spare lacing.

Smell: Tart, juicy fruit aroma of lemon, orange and tropical fruit along with some good farmyard funk: wet straw and woolen sweaters.

Taste: Juicy citrus, melon and tropical fruit with a sharp streak of wine vinegar a acidity and musty cellar funk. Increasing earthy, grass and yeast notes towards the bottom of the bottle.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with lively, effervescent carbonation.

Overall: Nicely sour, funky brew that blends well with the hoppy citrus and tropical fruit.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a Cigar City goblet.

A: Pours a hazy, yeasty gold with a big three-finger fluffy white head that fades fairly quickly. Lots of visible carbonation.

S: Punch of Brettanomyces funk up front, then yeasty and farmhouse and funky. Lemony citrus and a bit less tropical fruit in the hop profile as well. Light cracker malts.

T: Citrus fruit and Brett funk, and a saison-like yeastiness mixes with the Brett's horse blanket and barn earthiness - though less so than the nose suggested. Lemon and coriander, a mix of musky saison and yeast esters. Cracker malt sweetness. Orange and lemony citric bitterness in the hang with more Brett character.

M: Average to a bit heavy body for style, but still crisp with good carbonation sensation. Low alcohol presence.

O: Tasty and enjoyable. Not my favorite funky IPA…or Sour IPA or Hoppy Sour or whatever we’re calling these…but really enjoyable. I can’t see running out to get a bunch more but would gladly drink another if it were around.

No label information. Available in 500ml. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 500ml. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp, frothy foam head of a pastel white color over a densely hazy golden amber body with abundant, lively carbonation. Retention is above average and lacing is light and patchy. 3.75

(Smell) Pale malt body with earthy brettanomyces funk, moderate acidity with gentle vinegar with a hop profile generating lemony and citrus hop aromas with a moderate bitterness. Potency is moderate. 4

(Taste) Pale malt body with a gentle hop profile of lemon and citrus juice and a moderate bitterness, and a moderately strong brettanomyces earthy funk and acidity with a lactic sourness. Finishes puckering, mildly dry. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly residual, smooth, tangy, medium dry. Carbonation is moderate-full, generating a medium frothiness and a briskly crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly tangy earthy funky acidic over sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) Very enjoyable sour wild ale, with a flavorful citrus hop backbone, and a gentle bitterness. While the sourness drives this beer, the dry hopping contributes nicely to the flavor without complicating it and without sacrificing any of the biting bitterness. 4

Pours a golden hazy straw color agressive head bright egg shell white. Dissapates quickly leaving minimal lacing.

Aroma is of sour funk, sweet

Flavor is a funk backbone with a sweet earthyness. Slight citrus orange, possibly tangerine, apricot. Flavor profile from the Simcoe isn't heavy or over bearing. Lets the base beer show through but reveals itself the more you drink.

Mouth feel is full, carbonation is heavy but smooth.

Another well done single hop sour by Prairie.

Pours a foggy, very light straw with a white head. The head foams up quickly with three fingers of head after an easy-going pour. Lacing forms quickly after a sip, but with most of it slipping back into the beer. Aroma has some sour funk to it, with a wonderful citrus and earthy hop quality to it. Flavor profile is similar, with plenty of sour funk throughout the flavor. Flavor notes include citrus, and earthy, spruce. Mouth feel is bubbly, with a medium consistency. Overall, a fun, earthy sour. The sour funk is somewhat muted compared with other Funky Gold offerings.

Served in a 12oz snifter.
