Notes/Commercial Description:
Prairie Ale is our classic saison. We brew this beer with pilsner malt, wheat malt, flaked wheat, and cane sugar. A healthy dose of saaz hops are used to add a spicy element to the beer. Prairie Ale is fermented with a mix of ale yeast, wine yeast, and brettanomyces. Notes of black pepper and pineapple can be found in this beer.

Serving: Poured from a 16.9oz. bottle into a Nonic Pint Glass

A: Opaque yellow-orange in color that let's through a moderate amount of light. Kind of reminds me off the look of pulp-free orange juice. White fluffy head about 1-2 fingers thick.

S: The hops give it a slightly sweet smell, while the wine yeast & brettanomyces mixes in to give off a mild red wine smell.

T: Not much in the way of hops taste. The malt is heavier on the front which provides a slight sweetness, then quickly transitions into a peppery, sour finish. If you didn't know this had brett in it, the finish will quickly bring that to your attention.

M: Very quickly transitions from a smooth texture, to the carbonation taking over 1-2 seconds after sitting on the tongue, creating a very light and airy feel.

O: Had this beer once before on-tap, but I think it was either a bad keg, or the conditioning didn't take. Out of the bottle though, this beer is completely different. The carbonation and brett are immediately noticeable and true to style. Even though there's hops in this they're almost unnoticeable, and the malt is very subdued. The wine yeast is probably the most noticeable in the taste and aroma categories, and makes this one of my favorite Saisons.

Wispy bleached white head of extremely airy foam, amazing for how swiftly it evaporates down to the surface, looks like a video game, no lacing at all. Light, shiny golden straw color, easy to see through, full throughout with huge bubbles which steadily move with authority, a proverbial maelstrom in the glass. The nose suavely unfolds pressed flowers, clove spice, sour orange to grapefruit citrus, has a vinous quality to it, it’s too wiry and focused for the banana to bubblegum aspect to shine, same for any sweeter element, be it the apple, pear or the meadow breeze, the yeastiness is like just about to baked bread, not like dessert “baked goods.” Full-bodied, has a heavier which impairs it getting out of the gate, carbonation injects some fuel into this. White grape, pear, apple, apricot fruit lean and mean, bursts through and picks up speed from the pepper, clove, and metallic earth components. Noticeable for its freshness and cleanliness, once it breaks past the mid-palate it develops a lighter feel which makes it food friendly. Minimal banana and ester presence. Very interesting, obvious it belongs in this category but it doesn’t play to the crowd, quietly classy and willing to accept your lack of appreciation.

On tap at the Beer Trappe in Lexington.

Semi-hazy yellow-gold with a load of tiny carbonation bubbles rising to a modest but head.  Excellent lacing.

A style I dislike more often than not, this is the exception.  Although the peppery aroma carries a trace of the farmhouse component I dislike, it is mainly floral and secondly fruity.  Even the bready malt dominates the funk.

The flavor largely follows, albeit with more funk evident and some hop bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. 

O: refreshing, tame and highly drinkable for style.

From bottle to DFH IPA glass because why not...

A. Pours a very cloudy straw gold. I think some of the sediment may have come out on this one...my fault for not being more careful with the pour. The cloudiness actually adds to the appearance, though, giving it a subtle glow in the glass. About two fingers of creamy white head with tight and consistent bubbles flare up. Settles to a finger and then lingers for the duration. Lacing is equally dense and consistent. Great looking beer.

S. Lots of pear and grapeskin on the nose. Hints of cracked better and bread crust. Faint lemon zest and traces of clove and banana. This is a complex and inviting bouquet. It"s spicy and lively.

T. A bit more one-note than the nose and very much like the other Prairie saisons I've enjoyed. I get the aforementioned grape notes with grapefruit and lemon zest. Fairly bitter hop presence on the mid and a drying and yeasty finish. Lots of fruity esters up front and some phenolic notes on the back end.

M. It starts sweet, fruity, and intriguing and then finishes in a wave of dry, bitter, phenols with booze, yeast, and hops all popping up. Imbalanced and slightly off-putting finish.

O. After the pour and the nose I was really invested, but the taste and mouthfeel let me down. I feel this one is out of balance, with a finish that is overly dry and phenolic. It is similar to a Belgian Pale but there's just no balance, which makes this a one-note experience, and not altogether a pleasant one the more and more I sip it. This is a decent enough offering, but a disappointment after all the good things I've heard about Prairie.
