Prairie Ale is our classic saison. We brew this beer with pilsner malt, wheat malt, flaked wheat, and cane sugar. A healthy dose of saaz hops are used to add a spicy element to the beer. Prairie Ale is fermented with a mix of ale yeast, wine yeast, and brettanomyces. Notes of black pepper and pineapple can be found in this beer.

Its so gratifying to, after tasting a zillion beers that meet the parameters of the style, to taste a beer that exceeds what defines the style and becomes and exemplary example of the saison style. This beer does just that!

The saison pours with a hazy gold hue, that's tinted a shade deeper due to the suspended yeast. The somewhat murky beer develops a rich meringue of foam, stark white in color, that not only caps the beer for the long haul, but also laces intricately along the glass as the beer falls.

Fruit and spice align for the balanced scent while aromas of funky-fresh farmhouse character wraps around the scattered esters and phenols and pulls them all together. Lemons, limes, spiced pear, sandalwood, sea air, dried wood, apples, and dry white wine all define the nose in a very rustic and inviting scent.

Its assertive taste delivers a dry malt taste of crackers, whole wheat, and rye breads. It's terse sweetness is shunned as the taste prefers dry fruit flavors of dried lemons and limes, tart green apples, and sour white grapes. Sultans, plantains, and dehydrated apricot provide rich improvission of fruit, but without the associated sweetness of the fruit. The tropical and citric acids and balanced by spicy white pepper, paradise seed, mild cumin, and fennel. Funky flavors of saddle leather, fragrant sandalwood, hay and grass all provide pungent complexities that balance the fruit and malt effortlessly and exponentially.

Medium-light in body, the malt and fruit springs from the tongue from the explosive carbonation that carries the taste over the tongue and against the palate for a quick finish of fruit, spice, and earth. The beer finishes before the taste buds are able to fully appreciate its taste- leading to a high rate of refreshment and drinkability. Closing with high peppery spice, high acidity, and strong alcohol warmth- the beer resonates with the tart dryness of the most arid wines.

This is an incredible saison that not only delivers on the promise of dry fruit, high spice, and ultimate dryness; but does so boldly and with the glaring envelops of earthen must in such a way that is rarely delivered outside of the farmhouses of Belgium.

500ml bottle, cool to see this American prairie (heh) brewer make it up here to Alberta.

This beer pours a hazy, pale golden straw colour, with four fat fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and rather creamy eggshell white head, which leaves some roiling sea foam lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of semi-sweet, doughy and crackery pale malt, orange and lemon citrus flesh/rind, perky earthy and mildly phenolic yeast, white pepper and coriander spice, and some odd, but still welcoming piney and tropical fruit bitter notes. The taste is bready, doughy pale malt, more than a touch of caramel sweetness, sugary coriander, black and white peppercorns, laid-back earthy, and ethereally funky yeast, somewhat candied orange and lemon citrus, and further leafy, piney, and herbal hops. No real trace of the elevated ABV, save a subtle warming.

The carbonation is quite involved and uplifting in its tight frothiness, the body a sturdy medium weight for the style, and generally smooth, a slight yeast and hop incursion merely a trifle. It finishes off-dry, the pilsner malt really showing off its stuff, amongst the heady detritus of fruit, spice, yeast, and hop. As for the alcohol, an APB has just been issued for its whereabouts.

I'm always psyched when I come across an excellent example of a style with which I am typically less than enamoured, and from an even less likely point of origin. Ladies and germs, exhibit A, then, of a saison made right, in the American sub-genre - hoppy, boozy (apparently), and the genuine article otherwise. Yum.

Cork opened with a pop, and racing carbonation began accumulating in the neck, and the foam slowly pushed out of the bottle. Served in a small snifter glass, 6-8 oz.

Opaque straw color charged with champagne-level carbonation. Despite this, there was only a thin layer of foam on the surface. This may have been a result of rinsing the glass before the pour.

Aromas of damp hay, brett yeast, grassy herbals. Lightly funky.

Tastes moderately bitter and earthy, tangy brett yeast that coats the palate and grabs hold. Dried citrus peel, grassy bitter hops, funky wet hay from the brett. Medium bodied, seemingly effervescent, though it loses steam eventually. A nice saison that showcases Brettanomyces well.

A: The beer is very hazy pale light yellow in color—almost what you would expect from a Berliner Weissbier. It poured with a quarter finger high white heat that quickly died down but consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of brett yeast are present in the nose along with some hints of spices from the Saaz hops. The brett becomes a little stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste is a little sour from the brett and has notes of peppery spices towards the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is a nice hybrid between a saison and a wild ale; you can pick up the characteristics of both of these styles, both of which are balanced together.

Appearance: Cloudy straw yellow. Nice, creamy white head.

Aroma: Barnyard funk that makes me say Brettanomyces. Lemon, earthy notes, and white pepper/spices.

Taste: Same as the aroma.

Mouthfeel: Medium-high carbonation. Wet and light on the tongue.

Overall: A really tasty and refreshing farmhouse saison. I love the estery profile, and the mouthfeel keeps me coming back for more. A solid brew.

This is a strange-tasting beer, but I love it.

I drank this some time ago, but I remember the nose and how it tasted so vividly. It's one of the beers I use as a prime example in floral flavors in beer. So if you are looking for floral flavors in your beer: drink this beer. The way I always describe this light, summery ale is: it tastes the way tulips or amaryllis flowers smell. It has a florid and almost farty pungency. I am sending home to Oklahoma from NYC for this one and will continue to for as long as it's brewed.

In a pint glass this beer was a hazy yellow color, like straw. There was a small white head.

Sweet malt aroma. Citrus. Earthy hops.

Lemon taste. Biscuit. Late hops.

A wonderful saison. Eminently drinkable.

I didn't think there was much to talk about in Oklahoma, but Prairie Artisan Ales is a definite hit.

Stuff I don't like in an objectively good beer: Pilsner malt, wheat malt, Saaz hops, and Brett. Between spicy hops and saison-style yeast, I just kinda want it to calm down and smoothen out. It is, nevertheless, a classic saison! Black pepper and whatever pineapple are undertones. I should read the description before I buy it, but I'm glad I to try it! $10 for another bottle: no way.

A- gushes out of the bottle with a huge force. Not surprisingly the pour into a Tripel Karmeliet tulip is cloudy, with a huge white head of loose bubbles that fades very slowly leaving thick laces. Color is a cloudy light gold.

S- funk, hay, noble hops, pear, banana, cardamom, mineral water, maybe a touch of alcohol. Smells like a funky farmhouse ale with lots of complex characteristics.

T/M- Dry and highly carbonated. Starts with a soft lemony bite that fades to bready and hay like malt mixed with a farmyard funk that displays decaying earth, before a fairly bitter and dry swallow. Taste seems to lack some of the complexity of the nose with the spice and fruit largely displaced by the earthy funk, the sweet malt and the intense combination of carbonation and bitterness.

O- I'm going back and forth on this one. While it delivers what it promises (farmyard) the extreme carbonation and moderate bitterness are a bit off putting and as it warms the alcohol, rather than fruit or spice, is the most increasingly noticeable attribute.

Poured from a 16.9 oz bottle into a tulip. Look: cloudy yellowish gold. Huge white foam head. Good lacing on the glass as I drank. Smell: citrus, hops. A little Belgian yeast smell. Taste: citrus fruits, moderate hop bitterness. A little bit of toasted bread. Not as complex as I was hoping for a saison. Slightly bitter finish. Feel: light, lots of carbonation. Overall: Not overly impressed but still a decent beer. This was my first Prairie Ale to try. I'd be willing to try others but this probably wouldn't be my go-to saison.
