Aroma: Tangerines, pineapple, and mango with sweet roast malt in the back.

Appearance: black with dark brown highlights. Dark tan head that lingers.

Taste: Not as citrus and tropical fruit forward as it smells. More piney and dank hop flavor. Roast malt contributes interesting tannic finish. Fruity esters are apparent probably yeast derived.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Very slightly astringent in the finish.

Overall: really interesting beer. Black IPA is nice with galaxy. I am not sure if I like it with the yeast esters but I am glad I tasted it.

Figured I should give this one a review because I thought it was awesome (many ratings before me would indicate otherwise).

What I really enjoyed about this beer was that it actually contained what it said on the label. When combining flavors and "styles" often times, distinct elements from each style are not prevalent. This was not the case.

I read the label and expected a hybrid of a black IPA and a saison. That's exactly what it was. Full bodied and creamy, dark as a stout with a nice fluffy head, very saison like.

Aroma was that of fruity and peppery esters, floral hops, and chocolate malts.
Taste; a wonderful melding of the flavors I expected, hiding the alcohol quite well. I had no idea it was 8% abv til I came here to rate it (usually I look for/notice these things on the label, perhaps OK doesn't require it).

Bottom line, if you like saisons and/or hoppy dark ales and think the two combined would be interesting, then you will love this beer. Having had a few beers with the same concept (Mikkeller/Stillwater colab and GreenFlash/St. Feuillen colab) I can say that the Praire Ales rendition is by far the best.

Pours black, looks good

Smell is super nice, funktastic with some hops - some of my friends smelled urine, but...that's just what we call "strange funk"

Taste is nice but not incredible, sour, malts and plenty of hops.

Overall pretty good and fun/interesting brew from an awesome brewery - tons of hops and sour funk, nice one!

Poured into a pint glass. The 1-inch, tan head didn't go anywhere. It just sat there, daring me to drink it. Very dark brown, not quite black. Sour smelling, with lots of funky yeast and hops, some ammonia. This one's weird, with lots of flavors, aromas going on, some of which are, for me, unpleasant. The initial taste is sour, fermented grain, lots of hops; then smoke, more hops, then ammonia, sweet sour fruit. It's a beautiful looking bear, with the head down to 1/2 an inch, and the alcohol is perfectly masked. The beer tasted like a very good dark IPA, clean, some nice lacing I'm very glad I tried this, though not sure I'd search it out again.

Pours a very dark brown in color, with a massive, expanding tan head. Aromas of whisky, and a bit of pear as well. Taste begins with some sweet caramel up front, then a bit of phenolics, followed by some citrus, and a piney bitter finish. Mouthfeel is very good. Overall a different, but excellent tasting beer.

Got in a trade with cyde. 750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2013. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, tangerine, peach, passion fruit, cocoa, roasted malt, hay, straw, clove, pepper, musty funk, grass, floral, herbal, light pine, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop, yeast, and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, passion fruit, peach, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, clove, pepper, straw, grass, herbal, floral, light funk, light pine, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of pepper/clove yeast spice and pine hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, passion fruit, peach, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, light pine, light funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, roasted malt, and funky/spicy yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a lightly slick, crisp, and moderately prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent black Saison! All around great balance and complexity of hop, roasted malt, and spicy/funky yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours a deep black with a creamy head reminiscent of a root beer float. Smells unlike any other beer I've had. Smokey, hoppy, grainy, malty spice, with fruit and licorice thrown in. Sounds crazy, but the smell reminds me of an old pharmacy from my childhood. Coffee, citrus and hops are heavy, with a woody quality. Nice bitterness. Medium mouth. This wouldn't be my everyday beer, but it is excellently unique.
