Thanks to rudzud for sharing/splitting this interesting beer.

Huge foamy semi thick 3+ finger mocha head that doesn't want to fade but eventually collapses on itself, mild spotty lacing and soapy, just about pitch black beer.

Nose has definite funk, wild Brett like character that's either obvious intended funk or wild infection, horse blanket, musty and dank cellar, then funky saison with mild farmhouse spices, some malts with hint of grainy and mild creamy dark choc like malt little cocoa, and I think very light fruity almost tropical like hops, definite galaxy hops. But almost all that is drowned by the funk.

Taste comes creamy, very creamy, with lactose like flavours, milk choc, little cocoa and dark malts but light, and little grainy. Galaxy hops are there too, nice fruity floral hop, little mild tropical fruit like mango almost, etc. The funk is def there again, horse blanket Brett funk, and mild farmhouse funk too. Finish is creamy and a bit sticky, little dry, nice bitter fruity galaxy hop lingering, more funk and horse blanket, little yeasty.

Mouth is med bod but quite creamy, quite carbonated, not sure if I like the creamy, and carbonation is too much.

Overall ok but the wild Brett funk seems to overpower too much. Nice hops though, malts are ok, creaminess is meh, wish the hops came through a lot more as I love Galaxy hops, and the funk is just too much, not even sure if it was intended.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, slightly sour dark fruit, and funky Brett aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour roasted malt, fruit, and funky Brett flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of Brett and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting with a wide variety of unique aroma and flavors all meshed together in a single beer.

750ml Bottle
Binny's - Bolingbrook, IL

As soon as I pull the cork there's a loud pop and lots of gunsmoke. An easy pour fills the glass with a coffee brown body topped by a mocha head that's nearly unstoppable, half the glass in height actually. Ruby highlights pretty up the body when backlit and the head crackles down to a more manageable height while becoming craggy and leaving behind chunky lacing.

I could smell both the hopping and brett the second the cork was popped. Brett is upfront and in your face but brighter than your typical horse blanket, farm funk. Damp hay and pollen heavy wildflowers jump from the glass, a little dusty. Lactic, lightly sweetened citrus pass through here and there; lemon, orange, grapefruit, and a touch of mango in the back. Inviting.

Flavor isn't quite as bright as the aroma but there are some added, interesting aspects. Damp hay and wildflowers get things going again. The big citric hoppiness hits in the middle; lemon from middle to finish, grapefruit, orange marmalade, and soft tropical notes all play their role. Mild coffee and chocolate show up on the swallow and leave a soft bitterness. This sounds out of place but actually works very well. Surprisingly well actually.

The body is light with a nice softness. The coffee notes on the finish leave a soft lingering bitterness. My only gripe is that I'd like to see a touch more carbonation for some pop. The body is nice, the bitterness is nice, the bubbles are light.

I set this beer aside for a few months after it was already on the shelf for a few months. I'm not a big fan of black saisons or black IPAs but the little extra time seems like it killed some of the hops and brightened up the brett profile. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by this beer and while it's not as good as some of their other offerings I'd pick this up again.

500 ml Bottle poured into Boulevard Tulip

A: Darker than some porters or even some stouts that I've had in the past. This brew is dark with a brownish dark tan head with good carbonation and composed of medium to small creamy bubbles. Crazy dark saison, I can not wait!

S: As soon as I cracked this baby open I got a huge donkey punch aroma of hops. More aromatic and citrus filled aroma than a lot of well known and sought after IPAs... Once you get your nose all up in the glass you get a huge hit of citrus galaxy hops with an amazing Brett character with a huge farmhouse, barnyard funk... Oh my this is a great smelling and very interesting brew...

This is a very unique, border crossing, style defying beautiful beast that deserves so much more than the poor reviews others have given it.

T: Wow... Its hoppy with a funky Brett citrus backbone right off the back and follows with a barn yard funk from the Brett with a strong bitterness and some roast character from the darkness. This has no alcohol presence for its abv, which is common for this style.

M: Starts very funky Brett Saison like with a very IPA like character gong on in the middle and finishes bitter like an IPA but with some funk and a slight roast.

O: This has got to be one of the most unique twists on what is already such a wide style for Farmhouse Ales/Saisons. Roast, Brett, citrus hops and some how it all works in a very unexpected unique and controversial way. I love it!
