Pours a surprisingly robust dark brown, firm, thick head, with very good retention. Brew is nearly perfectly black out of the bottle, and super dark in the glass, like a glossy, liquid coffee bean. Sticky, thin lacing stretches down the glass.

Huge coffee notes hit first, followed by chocolate malt and roasted barley. Vanilla and cream, and surprisingly, yes, a little hint of chili pepper, which lends a spicy and vegetal flavor to the aroma. Vanilla is stronger on very deep breaths.

Taste lives up to the nose, balancing all of those effects in one. Coffee, roasted barley, and a hint of dry chili pepper spice (heavier on the flavor than the spiciness) are front and center; dark cacao mingles with the pepper (a little spicier now) on the mid and back-end; cream and vanilla work their way in toward the finish. Dry, peppery, and earthy as you move along. More chocolate as it warms.

Medium-full body, but a full-bodied flavor. Sticky, thick (but not exactly chewy), with a long, long thick finish. Minutes after a sip, I find myself still swallowing this dense brew. No foaming, minimal sting, and no (alcohol) heat.

This is a fabulously complex and thick stout, mixing together more flavors than are probably necessary. What is supposed to stand out: the coffee? The chili peppers? Cacao or vanilla? In truth, all of these are present, with none standing out disproportionately to the others. That's exactly the way it should be.

Thanks to JayORear for providing this as a gift.

Minimal carbonation and lacing, no bottling date so don't know the age on this one. Smell is primarily coffee, with some vanilla sweetness and there is definitely evidence of the chili peppers. The taste parallels the nose, predominantly coffee, with hints of vanilla and chocolate, and then only a bit heat from the chili peppers on the finish. It is remarkable how well everything comes together in this beer. For as complex of a beer as this is, it is exceptionally smooth. A little too much dominance by coffee for my personal preference, but a highly recommended brew. Cheers

I really tried to pour this one with some vigor to achieve a substantial head but only got about an inch. It is quite attractive though looking like foamy thick milk chocolate. Body is pour ink black in color. No light getting through here at all.

Nose is beautiful mouthwatering mix of rich coffee and milk chocolate. This smell is a real treat in itself just delectable. So fully incomfrencing the nose right to the taste buds.

As I take first sip I really get hit with a tone of bitter, high quality dark chocolate. Brisk and attacking the tongue with long dry and complex tones. The coffee really plays well here but it also is very bitter and dark. The peppers only act to add a bit of a sour twinge on the back of the tongue. And I really search for the vanilla bean only to find it smoothing out this brew and adding a bit of residual sweetness on the back of the tongue and mouthfeel.

This is a stout for big stout lovers who like theirs on the dryer side. This beer would probably age well for a very long time.

Orange waxed 12oz bottle from dbrelsfo (thanks Daniel!). I believe orange wax is batch 5- bottled spring 2014. Served in a Burnt Hickory snifter.

Pours oil black with an almost two finger mocha head. A thin layer persists, leaving some nice lace.

Smells of coffee, pepper, dark cocoa powder, roast malts and a slight vanilla sweetness.

Bold bitter and roasty notes dominate. Strong black coffee, bittersweet dark chocolate, ancho peppers, roasty malts and mild smoke. Smoorh, soft vanilla rounds things out towards the finish and traces of booze peek in and out of the other flavors. Deftly drifts between bold dark chocolate covered coffee beans and a more subtle pepper tinged vanilla. Dangerously easy to drink for 13% abv.

Velvety, smooth, creamy, medium full feel with moderate carbonation. Bitter coffee and cocoa with a hint of pepper.

Prairie has reached a great balance of adjuncts here. All four (coffee, cocoa, vanilla and ancho chili) play into the overall flavor, contributing to a well executed and flavorful stout. Bomb! is worthy of checking out and I'm looking forward to drinking more.
