12oz orange waxed bottle recieved in a trade from my man Jon in Texas. Thanks buddy!
A - Pours a viscous motor oil black with a dark brown head of about a finger, which recedes rather quickly and leaves no lace, as expected.
S - Lots of fresh roasted coffee is the dominant note in the smell, and lying just beneath is bittersweet bakers chocolate, roasted malt, sweet vanilla, and some very slight peppers as it warms. Really smells terrific, a much more pungent smell than the decent but underwhelming Vanilla Noir I drank a couple days prior.
T - Again, a large, fresh roasted coffee/espresso flavor upfront, which melds into milk chocolate, bitter bakers chocolate, and vanilla sweetness. The ancho chiles are more of faint flavor at first rather than any noticeable heat, but once it warms to around room temp, the peppers give a nice little kick in the finish. Just really well rounded stuff.
M - Thick, rich, and slightly chewy with some faint carbonation that's very fitting. Coats the mouth with flavors without being cloying or overbearing. The alcohol is also barely noticeable, just a little warmth in the throat.
O - A big improvement over the Vanilla Noir, this stout fires on all cylinders. The numerous flavors blend together rather seamlessly, and the alcohol is incredibly well masked. The only downside to this brew, which is kind of a big one, is the price point... $8 for an imperial stout is more than a bit expensive, and will certainly keep this out of any kind of regular lineup or trading for it more than once in a great while. But with that said, a delicious brew, extremely well crafted. I would recommend everyone to try this at least once.
