12oz red waxed bottle poured into a Cigar City snifter.

A - Pours oily thick into the glass and sits with a super deep brown color that approaches black...nearly totally opaque. A half finger of foamy cappuccino head sits on top for a brief time, falling slowly to a skim coat on surface with a thick foamy collar around the edge of the glass.

S - Rich coffee, thick on the nose up front. Smooth semi-sweet vanilla, warm boozy alcohol on every inhale, cocoa powder, Hershey's syrup, milk chocolate, fudge brownies, light chili pepper that gives a bit of a bite that complements the coffee nicely. This really smells great.

T - Sweet milky chocolate up front gives the first impression. This is quickly followed by dark roasted black coffee, a touch of acrid astringency. Then comes the chocolate - semi-sweet, and bitter chocolates, fudge and more coffee. On the finish comes the chili pepper - nicely sharp but still somehow subtle pepper to complement the prior flavors and slowly developing into a nice warm pepper heat that lingers past the swallow. Superb!

M - Thick, full body. Carbonation is on the lower side and gives a super smooth and creamy texture. Oily and a touch slick. Lots of nuance here with flavors that change from sip to sip. I notice lots of variety on the exhale - one time it is filled with vanilla, the next pepper, the next coffee and chocolate. Alcohol is scarily unnoticeable...can't believe this is 14%.

O - Outstanding! I came into to this with high hopes and a bit of skepticism. Everybody is coming out with their version of the cocoa, coffee, vanilla, chili (and usually cinnamon) imperial stout...always sounds outstanding, but the execution of these stouts have been hit or miss to me. I was finding it a little hard to believe that this could be as good as people have been saying. In actuality, I think it might be even better than people are saying. Tons of flavor - lot of nuance. Everything seems to work together quite well, even with so much going on. I wasn't particularly impressed by the appearance, but everything else was outstanding. This is a super imperial stout. Definitely will be looking for more of this.

Minimal carbonation and lacing, no bottling date so don't know the age on this one. Smell is primarily coffee, with some vanilla sweetness and there is definitely evidence of the chili peppers. The taste parallels the nose, predominantly coffee, with hints of vanilla and chocolate, and then only a bit heat from the chili peppers on the finish. It is remarkable how well everything comes together in this beer. For as complex of a beer as this is, it is exceptionally smooth. A little too much dominance by coffee for my personal preference, but a highly recommended brew. Cheers

I really tried to pour this one with some vigor to achieve a substantial head but only got about an inch. It is quite attractive though looking like foamy thick milk chocolate. Body is pour ink black in color. No light getting through here at all.

Nose is beautiful mouthwatering mix of rich coffee and milk chocolate. This smell is a real treat in itself just delectable. So fully incomfrencing the nose right to the taste buds.

As I take first sip I really get hit with a tone of bitter, high quality dark chocolate. Brisk and attacking the tongue with long dry and complex tones. The coffee really plays well here but it also is very bitter and dark. The peppers only act to add a bit of a sour twinge on the back of the tongue. And I really search for the vanilla bean only to find it smoothing out this brew and adding a bit of residual sweetness on the back of the tongue and mouthfeel.

This is a stout for big stout lovers who like theirs on the dryer side. This beer would probably age well for a very long time.

Orange waxed 12oz bottle from dbrelsfo (thanks Daniel!). I believe orange wax is batch 5- bottled spring 2014. Served in a Burnt Hickory snifter.

Pours oil black with an almost two finger mocha head. A thin layer persists, leaving some nice lace.

Smells of coffee, pepper, dark cocoa powder, roast malts and a slight vanilla sweetness.

Bold bitter and roasty notes dominate. Strong black coffee, bittersweet dark chocolate, ancho peppers, roasty malts and mild smoke. Smoorh, soft vanilla rounds things out towards the finish and traces of booze peek in and out of the other flavors. Deftly drifts between bold dark chocolate covered coffee beans and a more subtle pepper tinged vanilla. Dangerously easy to drink for 13% abv.

Velvety, smooth, creamy, medium full feel with moderate carbonation. Bitter coffee and cocoa with a hint of pepper.

Prairie has reached a great balance of adjuncts here. All four (coffee, cocoa, vanilla and ancho chili) play into the overall flavor, contributing to a well executed and flavorful stout. Bomb! is worthy of checking out and I'm looking forward to drinking more.

This beer really is a treat! Dark blast of chillies and coco had a nice balance. The beer was not very hot in terms of the peppers shining thru. The brew was smooth and I absolutely would buy it if I saw it. I would seek this, store this, drink this and much as possible.

Bottom Line: Boom!

P.S the ABV is totally hidden!

1777th review on BA
Bottle to Prairie Tulip (Purple Lettering)

Batch 5 Orange wax.

Thanks to Will or CanadianGhetto for this one

App- A solid dark brown color with no transperency with a nice 1-1/2" slightly darker brown head that faded pretty quickly. The beer was deep and dense and poured like chocolate.

Smell- Right out of the bottle, I mostly get the cacao and the vanilla. Malty and rich like a milkshake. As it warmed more of the chili aroma came out as well. A nice mix. One doesnt overpower the other and you cant detect the nuances.

Taste- This was a very flavorful and layered and detectably smooth stout. I had a couple others with Chilis and it was too harse. The balance here of the ingredients is quite nice. The sweet of the vanilla and the change to the richness of the chocolate and then the subtle hints of spice was nice.

Mouth- A solid medium body, bordered on being a thicker beer but struck the balance nicely. The carbonation was a solid medium and was a bit bubbly and creamy.

Drink- A very good beer. I enjoyed it a lot. I was glad I was able to land at least one to review and enjoy this one. Prairie does some good things. I am happy to have some goodies in the fridge to try.
