On tap at Brothers Beer Bistro. From notes.

A - Poured opaque dark copper with good carbonation coming up. One finger of off white head left decent lace rings and a half finger of retention.

S - Big piney, hoppy character. Pineapple core. Good hop profile. Some yeast.

T - Woah. An aggressive take on the style for sure. Some booze, tons of pine and boozy fruits. Booze a bit too evident. Some yeast and bubblegum maybe as well.

M - Big bitterness with some booze to finish. Medium body and a decent carbonation.

O/D - Nice stuff. Complex and enjoyable, but a touch too boozy. Fairly drinkable though and enjoyable. Like that they really went balls to the wall with this one.

This is my #1 choice so far when it comes to BtP's frequently rotating selections, and probably my favourite local beer. Apparently it has become so popular that they will be reducing the % in order to reduce fermentation time and increase the production on it, which is bittersweet.

Surprisingly hoppy for this style of beer, and it has a strong sweetness with many fruit/citrus notes. The current batch has a fairly high ABV, which doesn't come across in the taste of it...when I first bought it, I was told by the representative to "be careful", and I am inclined to agree.

Tap: Poured a hazy dirty golden color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of grassy and floral hops with light sweet notes is quite interesting and refreshing. Taste is also dominated by lots of grassy hops notes with some floral undertones and some fruity ester. Body is full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I love those Belgian IPA and this one did not disappoint.

Poured from a 32oz growler into a stemmed tulip glass.
Bottle Date: 2013/09/26; Poured 2013/09/28

A: Hazy, dark copper in color pouring to 1-2 fingers of off white head falling to a thick sudsy persistent collar leaving lots of lacing.

S: The nose is very malt forward with some spicy hop notes and sweet citrus. The classic Belgian aromas come through as the brew warms a bit, making the nose a bit more complex.

T: A really nice balance of deep caramel malt and nice dry spicy floral hops. The malt is smooth and creamy but the finish is long dry and hoppy bitter yet surprisingly clean.

M: Medium high body and medium low carbonation; smooth, creamy, round. Though the car is a bit low, it is ‘normal’ for a growler.

O: A really nice DIPA and is dangerously easy drinking for a such a big beer. The Belgian notes are a bit masked, but come through as the beer warms.

Its hazy honey amber body doesn't strike me as a DIPA and I attribute that to its darker hue. Nearly two fingers of frothy, tightly knit off-white head rests on top. Sticky webs of lace colour the sides of the glass as the beer recedes.

A big burst of juicy fruit comes first. It's encased by a leafy and woody hop character. With both combined, it smells quite unique. There's a bit of resinous pine that pulls through. As the beer warms, the hefty malt bill slowly reveals itself in the form of toffee sweetness and rich breadiness. There's no sign of its alcohol content here.

The flavour is rich and malty with some rye spiciness. If I didn't know they used Belgian yeast, I would have put money on rye being part of the grist in this one. The fresh breadiness is there as is the sweet caramel/toffee notes. Both help to really flesh out the body. The hop character is much more green and leafy in character with a dry bite to it. Suggestions of tropical fruit lay at the back of the palate. I almost get a minty green note out of it as well. I'm quite impressed by how quaffable this is at 9% ABV and part of that is because of how balanced it is, especially for the style.

The body has a medium weight with ample richness. The dry bite from the hops helps to clean up the palate. The finish is neat and quick with its bitterness having next to no lingering effect.

Overall, a middle of the road, balanced DIPA. It lacks the hop essence in both aroma and flavor that I crave as a hop head but it does have nice depth and complexity. I didn't love it but I'm curious to see what else they have to offer.

On-tap at Volo.

Beer is reddish amber, with a very small off-white head. Gone fast.

Belgian yeast, bubblegum and light fruits in the nose.

Taste contains bubblegum, some fruity flavours and Belgian yeast. Moderate bitterness and a bit of booze.

Full bodied, highly carbonated and a bit astringent.

Overall, not what I hoped for. This is a hard style to pull off and I don't think this one does it.

This is my favourite local beer currently coming out of Ottawa and I wish that it was available more widely. Party Animal's a unique beer. The appearance is a little cloudy, but has a good colour. The smell's decent, but is deceptively rye-like. The taste is fantastic - super fruity and sweet. You would think it's a 4% ABV beer if you didn't see the label. I think that this beer really exemplifies the Beyond the Pale brewers' best attributes to bring fruitiness to a harder beer and make a VERY drinkable creation.

The smell let you know it will be a great fruity beer. The tropical aroma from hops are awesome.
In mouth, there's an explosion of flavours: Orange, citrus, pineapple and a hint of resin. High ABV is covered by all of it.

Drink it fresh and cold. My best DIPA for months
