im okay with this one, but it doesnt pump me up. pours a pretty average yellow clear colow tih no head. smells like a czech malt whatever beer. taste has a touch of sweetness and dustyn old malty thing going on, but i am uninspired here. mouthfeel is light as can be and minimally bubbled. in think it was more lively from the bottle, but this is very average. as far as czech pilsners go, urquell is still supreme. drinkable to the nines, but bored to tears...

Served on tap in Prague, served a typical yellow colour with a beautiful orange hue and a good head with sticky lace.
The smell is there not bad nor great.
It is very refreshing and has a nice taste for the style, which makes the mouthfeel awesome.
I am sad, so sad that the times I've had it on the bottle the beer was skunked, it did not taste the same way than in Prague, that's why overall this beer does not deserve a 4.0.

Sampled in Bratislava on-tap: Clear & medium amber in appearance. Formed a nice creamy head with good retention.

Not unlike a lot of pale lagers/pilseners with nice a grassy grain aroma & corn mixed in the the faintest spicy and citrus like smells.

A rather sweet like corn taste and again some grassy grains mixed to for a easily drinkable pint with some malts and a mild lemon flavour.

A nice light & refreshing beer that is pretty crisp & smooth to boot. A nice tang that tickles the tongue & very drinkable as a session beer.

A very nice pint indeed and especially good when compared with the draught lagers I am used to back home. Easy to drink & very refreshing.

Review of the domestic Czech version

From notes, 8/22/2010

Got a pint from a tap in a sausage vendor's lunch stall downtown in Prague.

Appearance: Brilliant;y clear bright yellow/gold. Fluffly head that left lace all the way down. Which didn't take long...

Smell: Very faint malty smell, just a hint of saaz.

Taste: Light malt sweetness is balanced early by a citrusy saaz flavor. Delicate bitterness really balances the malt in just the right way.

Mouthfeel: Just the right amount of carbonation to help the citrusy notes burst through the malt and give the brew an overall creamy texture.

Overall: How in the hell can A.B. say they have the same recipe? This lager is crisp, flavorful, and drinkable. A perfect companion for my sausage and sauerkraut lunch on a mild Czech summer day. This will probably be the brew by which I will judge all other pilsners.

On-tap at U Medvídků, Prague, Czech Republic

A: The beer is crystal clear golden yellow in color and poured with a two finger high bright white head. No carbonation is visible.
S: There is a light to moderate aroma of citrus--oranges stand out in particular.
T: The initial taste is rather malty and has some hints of sweetness; this is balanced by a milt amount of bitterness in the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is very easy to drink and is quite sessionable. I could drink these all day long.

A- Very pale golden in colour. Thick creamy head that went down to a thin layer. Lots of visible carbonation.

S- Quite bitter smelling. Hop smell is quite strong, with hints of malts coming through, along with some caramel. A hint of skunk is somewhat detectable at the back, but very little and not enough to ruin the smell or taste of the beer.

T- Heavy sweet hop flavour at the front which develops into a light caramel malt flavour. Finishes with a lingering bitterness. Very light in the mouth.

D- Very enjoyable beer. More bitter than I was expecting so it was a surprise, but all in all a very good Czech pills.

Drank this at the Grange Saint Paul Hotel in London last week.

Pleasantly surprised to see it on tap. Overall quite drinkable but not overwhelming. Served in a Brewery glass with a etched patch and logo "B" on the bottom. Review from notes.

Clear, pale straw, gold with Creamy, tight knit ,white head.

Smell is light floral, some faint grain.

Taste was light and clean, not bracing nor especially crisp.

Mouth feel was modest and light.

Very drinkable given the other options were a bit dodgy. Becks "4" and "Stella" though the Staropomen was a nice treat.

Overall a pleasant drinking experience.

I have had this beer over the years, I love Pilsner, real Czech or German pils. I lived in Germany for a time, and had good pils from time to time.

Finally I got to the Czech Republic and I would say, drink this beer in it's home country and you will fall in love.

Appearance: Fast forming Foam, when watching the Beer Tender, Really sexy lacing as you drink it. I mean, SEXY! with a Golden clear glass where you can observe its purity.

Smell:Fragrent, like freshly cut grass with lemon, I mean the real Pilsner hop arouma.

Taste: you can taste the bitter hops and the blend with the malt. The hops are spicy and herbal. It teases or stings your tounge.

Mouthfeel: it is light, refreshing and crisp. It leaves a smouth finish that invite another mouthful. It is so crisp that regular beer drinkers would love, and beer lovers can dig into.

On tap poured into a .5l Budvar glass.

This is an awesome beer, I enjoyed it many times while in Prague, I wish it was sold in the US.

Pours a light pale golden color with a nice one finger fine white head that leaves a bit of light lacing. Nose is fairly sweet and malty with s slightly bitter note on the end.

Taste is delectable. It's easily one of the most drinkable beers I've ever had, it's creamy and sweet with a nice hop bite. Mouthfeel is a bit chewy and thick but still very crisp.

Had this on tap at a chinese restaurant in Prague. Served in a pils glass, cool.

A-clear golden yellow body and a thick white cap of a head.

S-metallic, clean and floral.

T-sweet grain and cereal front, light cleansing hop finish.

M-light,

D-good but really lacks character and depth. Refreshing, nothing off in the flavor department, but I think there are better choices out there.

I had this beer on-tap at a small jazz pub in Kiel, Germany.

The beer has a light golden color with a good head and carbonation. The aroma was light with a hint of sweetness. The taste was clean and refreshing. It went down smooth with an easy finish. This is very drinkable as I had a number of these while relaxing to the music.

I had this beer on tap when traveling in Germany a few years back. As a relative beer novice back then I had little to no knowledge of it. It remains one of my personal favorites, and thus a good candidate for my first BA review.

Served from the tap into a Budvar tulip glass (which I was given by the bartender as a souvenir, probably from ordering so many!)

(A): Bright, clean and clear golden color. String of bubbles rising to a thin pure white head.

(S): Floral notes, crisp scent. The word "clean" comes to mind. Nothing overly intriguing in the bouquet.

(T): Much more going on here than I expected. Spiciness from the hops that lingers throughout, a flavor that reminds me of a scone: dry and bread-like with a barely detectable sweetness. Finishes clean.

(M): A fuller feel than the color would have you believe. More carbonation than I care for, usually. Overall perfectly fine for the style but nothing to really speak about.

(D): I could drink this beer all night long. As I said, it is one of my favorites, especially on tap in Europe. The flavor finishes well and doesn't linger and it isn't too filling or potent. A great session beer in my mind.

Note: I occasionally find the USA bottled version "Czechvar" around my area and I do drink it. It's a bit different to me, or at least I think it is. I think anything tastes better in its native region, but that could be psychological. ;)

12 oz green bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a abosolute crystal clear gold, with 2+ fingers of brite-white foamy head. Retains with a bit of a thin fizzy look, leaving a moderate amount of foamy spotty lacing behind. The aroma is floral and spicy up front, with a sharp pang of citrus and toasted biscuits in the back. This has a bit of a sticky feel here in the nose.

The taste matches the aroma, with an initial spicy bitterness that is balanced by a fairly strong sweetness from those bready feeling malts. There is some leftover bitterness in the finish, with a dryness that lingers for a bit in the mouth. The mouthfeel is lighter-medium bodied, with a sharp crispness that prickles the mouth, yet this still remains nice and smooth. Easy drinking stuff here.

I didn't mind this at all. Moderately flavored with a crisp and thirst quenching nature about it, I could down a couple of these in a sitting no problem.

On draught at Kickoff in Waterloo.

Poured into a Czechvar tulip glass. Deep golden, a thin white head that stuck around for most of the session. Some lacing.

Smell is typical for the style: light hops, grass and grain, a bit of sweetness at the back.

Taste is fairly good, crisp and refreshing. Hard to say a whole lot, other than a better-than-average pilsner flavour.

Mouthfeel is well carbonated, not too thin.

Still not my favorite, but a nice, easy drinking pilsner. Usually fairly cheap at the LCBO, I say go for it!

I had it on-tap in at a bar in Oslo. They had many imported beers mostly from Europe but, also a few American micro-brews. Since, I live in Costa Rica I don't get a chance to try different beers so it was nice to have something new.

It was served in a pint glass and had a one finger head which wasn't impressive. I didn't look when it was poured since, I was talking to a friend and the bartender was pouring a few beers so I didn't really get a chance to see it's true head. Of course, the appearance wasn't anything special but, I is a little more of an amber color than most pilseners.

The nose wasn't strong but, clean like the taste. The most prominent taste was that of hops and a less prominent taste of malt and floral flavor. It wasn't bitter at all, it's one of those beers that make you want to take another sip. Also, it was more on the thin side but, not completely. I would recommend this beer. I didn't have another one because, I wanted to try Mack, a Norwegian beer which is brewed in the northern-most brewery in the world.

On tap in Prague on some random place with outdoor seating.

Decent 2 finger head.

Served in .5 liter glass. Straw color, some carbonation. Very little aroma, maybe some hops.

Taste wasnt too bad, nothing outstanding. Absolutely better than the Bud in the states. Theres some hop presence and its easy to drink. If this were available as is in the states I would use this as a gateway dru.. uh beer to better styles.

I feel like the alcohol percentage was higher, I dont normally get loopy after a half pint of 5% beer, and I ate at the same time, maybe dehydrated.

Pint at Three Good Things in El Segundo tonight for four dollars, was in the mood for a beer and this was about as interesting as their selection got, color is a light golden yellow, creamy one inch white head, not much retention, no lacing, aroma is very weak and has some skunkiness, yeast, light grain, grass, and maybe some citrus, taste starts off light with some grain, watered down in the middle, finish is yeasty and grainy, pretty crisp at first but not once it warms, chewier by the end but this is meant to be a refreshing pilsner and it does not really achieve that, slightly chewy and watery mouthfeel, thin bodied, way too much carbonation, taste does not last, goes down easy and does even seem five percent, light and not much to it, drinkability is good but flavor suffers as a result, little better than the standard Budweiser and also different in many ways, although I do see many similarities as well, would not drink again, not recommended

You guys are all posers. Don't you know there is a Budvar 10 and a Budvar 12, and furthermore the Budvar that earned the reputation is the 10? The 10 and 12 are like night and day. Go to the Czech Republic and have a Budvar 10 on draft. All we get in the states is the Budvar 12, which is nothing more than a glorified Becks, and all these geeks love to talk about the Budvar's superiority over A-B when they have never even had the Budvar that is the cause of the whole brewhaha. HA HA indeed! Get out of your mom's basement and travel!!!

A clean golden color, plenty of nice fizz with with simple all-white head, thin and active. Pretty standard stuff.

The aroma has a nice crispness with wheat and herbs and a very nice red-fruity effect that makes this pretty interesting.

A very clean flavor from a simple pils is really all i ask. This one has a wheat and corn in the malt flavor with gentle fruits for more depth. This one is a nice 'with-dinner' beer. the feel is crispy and fresh until the end. and since it's from a green Imported bottle, that's a really good thing.

Draft.

Pours clear, effervescent golden-yellow with a fluffy one-finger white head.

Nose is a bit grassy, some dry, lightly sweet malt comes through as well.

Taste is quite nice - clean and classic, with a light, crisp sweet malt note underneath the initial burst of carbonation, and a beautiful, light, grassy hit of saaz hops leads into a light finish with just a trace of lingering bitterness.

Moderately-high carbonation over a medium-light body.

Deliciously drinkable.

Comes out of the tap a fairly average clear amber, but it does have a nice, fine-bubbled white head. Aroma is rather weak, malty, and not promising. Flavor is wan but palatable, malty with a good hint of citrus. Texture is smooth and fairly tingly. I am just not a big fan of pilsners.

Another example of a vastly superior product when consumed near its source. In my case, it was directly from the unfiltered lagering tank while on a personal tour of the brewery.

The head is an egg shell white with moderate staying power. The liquid is clear and golden colored.

Light hop aroma, but not floral. No grainy smells, just clean malt. The flavor does show some graininess, but the overabundance of carbonation is the real distraction. The body is not solid enough to counterbalance this.

Overall, this is a tasty if not slightly bitter. I noted that it worked well with a duck lunch later in my trip to Prague.

Had this on-tap in Prague, CZ. Beautiful country, nice people. This is the original "Budweiser."

Smells of grain & hops.

Not much taste or mouthfeel to speak of, undrinkably dry, metallic and bitter. Feels thin and light. Over-hyped. I did not finish it.

I loved in Czech for 6 months and I would have to say this was one of my favorites. Most of Americans didn't like it as much and opted for the less pungent Gambrinus. Great example of a fine Pilsner. I tried back in the US and I would have to say it's not the same. But, still a great beer.

Overall flavor is very similar to most Euro pilsners, though this one is just a bit cleaner, crisper, and hoppier than others (probably because it was on tap); body is thin and carbonation just fine
