Traditional sour wheat ale inspires by the German original. Made with wheat and pale malt, this beer is refreshing and quaffable with flavors of sourdough and citrus fruit.

A: Golden, hazy; similar to a hefeweizen.

Smell: a little bit sour, but also not that much there.

Taste: sour without being overwhelmingly so.

Mouthfeel: crisp, dominated by the tartness.

Overall: very good; I wish more breweries made beers like this. I wonder if they do because Charlottesville has a developed market for cider, so people are more willing to have cider-like beer.

Poured from a 12 OZ can into a pint glass. The appearance is light golden crystal clear with a medium sized white head. The aroma is nondescript with a dry finish. The flavor is gull of citrus and is highly carbonated.

I love a Berliner Weiss and I found this to several elements that made it special but it kept a pervasive corn malt flavor that just about ruined it. Nice balanced tartness and a light sour flavor helps this drink incredibly smooth and refreshing. It's very strong on the wheat malt side but then the corn washes it away.

A thanks to the captain of the canship, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a pale yellow color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of lemons, some wheat. Taste is tart, light, lemons, a bit of wheat, dry at the finish. Feels light bodied in the mouth and overall is a mediocre beer.

Poured from the can into a wheat ale glass.

This has got to be the most palest Berliner I have ever seen. Bright faded hay straw body color, with an emphasized clarity and long streams of cola bubbles. Almost Zima looking here, with a one finger bright head, minimal retention and very thin collar that dissolves quickly to next to nothing.

Very tart nose for the aroma. Strong fruit notes of lemon, hiding powdered flour like grain in the back behind it. Hints to a bit of crab apple with some good puckering sensations, seems very large.

Palate comes with a good emphasis on tartness but in a very different angle. Clean finishing, slow bready aromatics on the aftertaste which is a good plus that really builds. Mid palate though is very wet, and has a very cidery feel and character taste to it as well. Mid palate has more apple than fruit like qualities and also some gaseous mild dioxide like character.

Overall a very odd berliner, coming off more like cider than beer, some good malt and bready finish luckily saves it from being a complete bust.

A- Can poured into a glass with a ever-so-slightly hazed, uber-pale golden body and a tiny white crown. The head dies out almost immediately to a tiny belt at the edges with lace rarely sticking to the glass.

S- General lactic sourness with hints of lemon and a touch of whole wheat. Green apple and pale grapes also comes to mind (not in the off flavor sort of way though).

T- Based on the aroma I expected a bit more tartness and overall the acidity is rather low with just a hint of lactic lemony tarts. Finishes more raw-grainy and wheaty than the aroma suggested with notes of diluted lemon water lingering.

MF- Very much light bodied with somewhat of a seltzer feel due to a lack of smoothing textures; ever so slightly foamy. High end carbonation and just a touch of tartness.

Solid sort of middle-of-the-road example of the style with a light tartness and general lack of lacto complexity. Quaffable indeed but also lacking an oomph from both the wheat and souring agents.

A: Pours a clear pale yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and faint lemon + straw yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall fizzy foamy white head that reduces to a large patch of mottled thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light aromas of sour wheat over the top of light aromas of sour citrus/lemon. Hints of grainy malt with a touch of corn adjunct sweetness.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of slightly sour wheat, grainy malts, and just a touch of corn adjunct sweetness. Hints of bready malts are also present. That is followed by a lightly tart lemon citrus and just a hint of tart green apple. Minimal amounts of bitterness which fades away almost instantly.

M: Light bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Light hints of acidic prickliness.

O: Interesting but not a traditional Berliner Weisse by any stretch. Enjoyable and refreshing in the summer.
