An ok IPA but nothing noteworthy. Pours a crystal clear light copper color. Small to medium sized white head with average retention and some bands of lacing on the glass.

Aroma is mild citrus hops..The more floral Simcoe hops probably provide most of the aroma.

Taste is ok. There is some bitterness there balanced by bready malts. Mouthfeel is a bit weak and watery, Somewhat crisp and bitter, but definitely lacking.

Good thirst quencher but nothing special.

12 oz can into a wine glass.

A: Pours a slightly hazed copper color. The head is a finger high, with an off-white shade and a texture reminiscent of cola. Despite the bubbly, rough looking head, retention is actually good.

S: This seems to be rather piny in particular. I'm getting twinges of grapefruit, but the pine is what dominates. It's also pretty malty, bringing plenty of caramel and toffee. What I don't particularly like is that it's less than a month old, and it already smells like an old IPA. Wut...

T: Again, it's malty. The caramel notes are pretty heavy handed, with the piny hops only there to balance rather than be showcased. My fears were assuaged: this is far too malty. Even worse, the malty flavor is nondescript burnt grain notes, rather than defined caramel, nuts, or brown sugar. Something is wrong if the dominant flavor in an IPA are burnished crystal malt notes...

M: Malt sugars cling on the palate and don't let go. It doesn't go down easily at all, and that's criminal for an IPA. It's pretty well carbonated, but that's no help at all.

O: Yikes, beers like this are exactly why I don't like super-malty IPAs. And it's fresh, to boot! This just shouldn't taste like some mediocre amber ale. There are far too many IPAs on the market for me to give this a second chance, frankly.

Pours a red brown body with good head and lace patches on top of a citric hopped aroma with minor caramel sweetness. Beer isn't bad and isn't that hard to drink but it's mostly hops, no real sweetness or balance, the hops don't give off much flavor other than some earthy, citric flavors that just leave you drinking a dry hoppy beer (thankfully not nuking your tastebuds). Nothing spectacular but by no means a train wreck, either.

Champion's flagship beer. Have not had a chance to try it in a can, but this beer is a lot better than most people are making it out to be. Up there with Virginia's best IPAs (not that Virginia houses the best). Expect to see this making it around - especially considering how quickly this microbrewery is growing.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Canned June 12th 2014.

Deep bronze orange, and hints of peach colors, with a good amount of clarity. Nice slow rising carbonation, bubbles are quite thin to match. Head is light and slightly khaki colored with moderate retention, and a small three finger very soapy head that slowly settles, with no lacing.

Very closed bouquet, but there are some aromas here. Malt seems to hit first with a bit of toasty bread and sweet cinnamon. A little doughy a bit too. Hop angle seems very indistinct and hard to detect. A bit of dank quality peaks out, and there's a sense of burnt grain on this.

Palate isn't really bringing the goods. A bit of a watery base to it. Malt and hop action comes off dry, but also with a very light and extremely chalky aftertaste. Parching. Hints of malt sweetness are completely lost on this adding no more to the flavor.

For an IPA this fresh this is extremely lacking in the hop department for starters. Unfortunately the other qualities of malt presence and the watery body really don't help either. Not horrible but this is a bit of a dud.

Medium gold with a two finger head. A bit of pine and citrus peel in the nose.

Malt is slightly sweet with a subtle buttered toast note. Medium-boded. Carbonation is nice. Finish is assertive and a bit astringent. Dry. A bit rough around the edges and has an element that is a bit "unclean" to my palate. It's decent but not necessarily a "go to" IPA for me. The market is saturated with IPAs -- and many good ones at that -- it might be hard to convince me to buy another six pack of this. But if offered or dealing with a limited selection, I could definitely deal with this for an evening.

Probably not bad with some crackers, mustard and sharp cheddar cheese.

Received as an extra in a trade and poured into my Duvel tulip. Canned on 5/20/14

A - Pours a nice crystal clear light copper hue with a one finger creamy white head that fades to leave a very thin blanket. No real side lacing at all.

S - Aromas of malty sweetness, maybe some light herbal earthy hops, faint caramel and floral notes. Nothing really jumpy.

T - Taste is similar to the nose. The malty sweetness isnt quite as assertive, and there is a faint faint bitter finish. The hops are more floral than herbal now, light earthiness. Alcohol hidden well.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, though still someone feels a bit on the watery side. Alcohol still hidden.

O - Overall, this isnt a bad IPA, especially from the state of origin. Still though, would like say a different hop profile than what this one has going for it. That being said, it is quite drinkable.
