A-dark brown, a lot of tan head, waterfall effect

S-very sweet smelling. molasses is noticeable but not strong, fairly disappointing for a porter.

T-very watery with some chocolate hints in the after-taste. more of a stout than porter. this is one disappointing beer

M-just watery all the way through, very low carbonation

D-as bad as it is, the drinkability for some reason could be worse. its not completely disgusting and once you get past the fact its a sad beer, it can go down easily

Sampled 4/23/08. I was disappointed with this one. Dark brown body with a thin head and not really much lacing. Roasted malt flavor with some smoked caramel but it is a bit watery and thin. Goes down easy enough but leaves me wanting quite a bit more.

Part of the sample flight at BJ's Daytona

Sight - ruby red with a light tan head
Smell - nothing much of anything
Taste - traced of cocoa and toffee, lacking a back bite
Sweet - 3/5
Bitter 2/5

A very light porter, almost like a souped up version of the Jeremiah Red. I felt it needed more in the hop department as it was overly sweet.

On tap at the Plano, Texas location.

The beer pour a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma has some chocolate and roasted malt notes, as well as some light smoke. The smoke is more intense in the flavor, where there is also some chocolate and roasted malt notes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: Pitch black, with a thin light chocolate color froth.

S: Strong chocolate with a hint of coffee. Odor of roasted malts raises the expectations, very pleasing to the nose.

T: Thin and watery, not what I was expecting. Nearly like a 'Light" malt. Not robust as described, nor as hearty as a porter should be. My palate was rather disappointed.

M: Light and smooth, but no richness to it. Feels too thin to be a porter. A rather large letdown for me.

O: Mediocre at best, too light, with no boldness to it. I don't think I'll be trying it again anytime soon. Maybe less nitro would help make this a stronger porter.

A - Black, with a mocha head that retains and laces well.

S/T - A little light considering the robust nomenclature. Smooth roasted malt rolls into dark chocolate tastes with a slight earthy hop bitterness in the finish.

M - Feels thin, even taking the nitro into account. Turns watery quickly and doesn't have that rich mouthfeel associated with porters.

O - Tastes average, mouthfeel is fairly sub-par though.

Brought to the table with a nice 1/2 inch head to go with a dark, creamy looking body. Smells of roasted or chocolate malt with just the slightest hop aroma. Tastes mostly of dark malts. Mouthfeel is a little lighter than I expected, perhaps due to the nitro tap. Drinkability was fair.

Reviewed 12/18/2009 (Tap @ BJs Clear Lake, Houston, TX):

Pours a very very dark brown color body, almost black. Smallish creamy tan colored head, lastingish. Roasted aroma, some nuttiness. A little coffee. Some milky, creamy sweetness. Not very strong. Creamy mouthfeel, smooth. Some roastiness, coffee and sweetness. Pretty clean, a little watery, like a porter. Tasty. Very good lasting lacing.

Sample at the Columbus location. This beer is a dark reddish-brown color with a dense light tan head that has good retention. Spotty lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma with some coffee and nutty notes. Medium-bodied with a toasted malt and coffee flavor, as well as a bit of chocolate. The finish is dry and roasty with a mild hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

This beer is a dark brown color with ruby highlights around the edges. Has a nitro-creamy light beige head with excellent lacing and retention.

I smell dried moss, peat, unsweetened chocolate and cocoa powder. Nose is pretty sparse, but fresh.

Earthy, peaty and chocolate flavors abound! Somewhat watery and thin. Was not too sure of this one after a sip or two, but it seems to be growing on me quite a bit. A decent beer, worth trying when making a visit to BJ's.

Actually had this at the BJ's La Mesa.

Poured from a draft into a pint glass at BJ’s Brewery in La Mesa, Calif. Color was very dark brown, just a tad bit lighter than the Tatonka Stout. About an inch of head. Tan lacing on the top. Smooth film on the sides.

Smelled of sweet chocolate malts. A tad whiff of coffee and toffee on the other side.

Taste was very similar to the nose. Tasted the chocolate malts up front, followed by caramel and toffee. Some coffee beans came in late.

Full body. Smooth and creamy texture. Average carbonation. Smooth and long finish.

Not a bad beer. I thought this was better than the Tatonka Stout. I’d probably give it another try.

Actually... go to my review for their Tatonka Stout... and for the pint, add about 1oz of water... there you have the PM Porter....

I don't mean to slam this bier.... it's still a nice porter.. but it tastes like dilluted stout...

This beer is first thought to be so dark its black, but on further inspection it is actully a very deep amber. The head is white and frothy, and the mouth feel is smooth. I like this beer mainly because it's after taste is much more mild than most porter's I have tried. As far as drinkability, this is will be on my list to continue to enjoy.

From the taps at BJ's in Mesa.

Served in a shaker pint, darkest brown, with a solid lightly tanned nitro-style head of about one finger's height. Nose is roasted and lightly sweet, with a mild metallic hint.

The flavor is so wrapped up in the creaminess of the beer as to seem lighter than it is. Some coffee and roasted barley, with hints of cream and molasses. Not too thin with the carbonation, but a solid mouthfeel and drinkability. Better than the stout (and everything else I've had at BJ's).

On tap at the San Bernardino location...

A - Brown with reddish hues and a one finger tan head that follows you all the way to the finish. Lots of sticky lacing to be had here. Very nice...

S - Scent is pretty docile. Sweet malts, brown sugar, and a little roast...

T - Sweet malts, toffee, brown sugar, and a little chocolate. Ends with a little roast. Taste pretty much follows the nose in that it is pretty muted. Super smooth, but not alot going on...

M - Smooth and creamy. Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation...

O - Wish the abv was a little higher, but I will most likely be getting this again next time i'm at BJ's. Really drinkable. Would be pretty easy to put a few of these back in a sitting...

Cheers...

By far their best beer. In fact, it's so much better than their other offerings, I wouldn't think it was from the same brewery.

Pours a dark, dark brown with some deep red highlights. Light tan head. Some roasty malt, a bit of coffee and a bit of chocolate to add balance, and a nice complexity of flavors. Perhaps a bit thin (characteristic of all their beers).

Not a masterpiece, but surprisingly flavorful and balanced. I wouldn't get anything else at BJs.

On tap at BJ's Brewhouse in El Paso TX, served in a pint glass.

The beer is black, with ruby highlights on the edges. The nitro gives her a nice, two-finger fluffy white head with good retention and some lacing. The nose is strong coffee with sweet cream, and light biscuit.

Super-creamy texture was the first thing I noticed upon taking a sip. There are big roast flavors--chocolate, espresso--and a moderate alcohol back. Heavier body, slightly bitter finish.

This beer is superior to the Tatonka Stout they make, though similar to it. The nitro helps for a nice head and improves the texture.

A: Served avertually black with a good two finger head that lasted quite a while and lots of lacing throughout.

S; Has a mild roasted malt aroma with a good bit of sweetness mixed in.

T: Taste is a mixture of coffee, toffee and a hint of chocolate. Fairly clean finish.

F: Full body, very cream and smooth. Very well balanced.Goes down very easy.

O: Excellent porter. At first I thought they had served me the Stout by mistake. This is a lot more enjoyable than than most of the beers they serve. Well worth a try.

A. Perfect pour. Poured a rich dark chocolate, with a light brown 1 finger head, and excellent lacing on the glass.

S. Dark roasted malts, brown sugar, carmel

T. I thought it would have been over powering sweet from the smell but I was pleasantly satisfied with the robust coffee and chocolate dark malt undertones. It leaves a slightly sour aftertase, but dry finish. Some oak or caskwood flavor as well.

M. Heavy and creamy, nice bitterness with a good sweet aroma.

D. Nice dark roasted maltiness not overly sweet, complex, and robust a great brew.

Enjoyed a pint of this beer at Greenwood, IN location (lifesytle portion shopping center)

Almost solid black in color. Nice beige/ creamy head. Beer had great undertones of coffee and chocolate. Taste was low on carbonation, however full bodied. Overall, wonderful beer. Food pairing on my behalf was only negative- tried the buffalo chicken pizza and the bacon cheeseburger pizza.

This beer has a frothy, long lasting light brown head that sits atop a deep brown, approaching black, colored beer. There is a hint of ruby highlights when the beer is held up to the light. The aroma has a full, bright nose of roasted coffee, with a bit of astringent roast malt and a finish of bright fruit (raisin, cherry and fig being most noticeable). The taste is soft and creamy with a full malty sweetness to it. This beer is fruity up front with notes of raisin and fig, but then finishes with a solid, yet in no way overwhelming, roast malt character reminiscent of dark chocolate and lightly roasted coffee. This beer is fairly light on the palate even though it has a certain milk chocolate like creaminess to it. I am really impressed with the balance this beer strikes between the soft fruitiness, the full caramel maltiness and the light roast character. This is really well done and again is a very impressive beer. This is a really nice Porter all around.

I was able to try BJ's PM Porter on nitro tap at the Brew Kettle on 12/23/2008. They served it to me in a standard pint glass.

The top of this beer was a solid pitch black color, but halfway down, the beer turned into a dark crimson red color. Let's just say that it didn't have a solid black color appearance. I'm fine with that. Sitting on top of this multi colored beer was a thick and creamy light tan colored 3/4 of an inch head of foam. This creamy head of foam lasted the entire time the beer was in the glass. The head of foam only receded when I took a sip of the beer. When it did recede, it left behind milky tan streaks of lace around the glass. I should probably thank the nitro tap for the beautiful appearance.

This Porter wasn't roasted, but more chocolate based. The aroma was chocolately with milk chocolate, a subtle hint of roasted coffee beans, and a touch of roasted malts. No hops, no sweetness in the aroma. It was just those 3 aromas. Even when it warmed up quite a bit, nothing new emerged.

The taste was super smooth and creamy with milk chocolate, a splash of dark roasted malts, and a hint of roasted coffee beans. The taste had the same 3 flavors that appeared in the aroma, but what separated the two was that smooth and creamy aspect that the aroma could never have.

This beer had a smooth and creamy mouthfeel that contained a dry coffee based aftertaste of roasted coffee beans, a hint of milk chocolate, and a subtle touch of dark roasted malts. Unlike in the aroma and taste, the roasted coffee shot pass the milk chocolate to make it the star of the show. Take that milk chocolate!

Wow! What a nice smooth and creamy chocolately Porter. Thanks to the nitro tap for making this beer so smooth and creamy. Would I drink this beer again? If it was on nitro tap, Hell Yeah!

Like most Porters the beer has a wonderful dark color and is served on nitro. I do like the way beer looks when it’s being pored on nitro. It’s not too heavy in carbonation but it was just the right amount. The smell of the beer isn’t a very strong one. The first time I taste a beer I never like it. That is why I have a one-pint to try, not just a couple of sips. But, this beer I liked right off. It has a wonderful mouth feel and a lovely coffee and chocolate taste to it. There isn’t any bitterness or a heavy alcohol flavor either. For a porter it’s a little on the light side of flavor but, I could drink this beer all day. I will put this porter in my “day beer” category.
