On tap in Plano, Texas.
The beer pours a light brown color with an off-white head. The aroma has a lot of cocoa and a little bit of toffee mixed in. The flavor is more of the same, with some nice toffee and light cocoa notes. The beer is very dry overall. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. One of the best year-round beers from BJ's.

Browned, with amber and orange highlighting in the TV-lit bar. Head is weak, mere wisps of lightly tanned bubbles.
Aromatic, with toasted grains, nuts and hops are coming out of the glass freely. Slight soapiness as well.
The flavor is fairly hoppy while maintaining balance. Very light body, so the hops shine. Slightly medicinal, but fruity. Crisp finish. Biscuity malts, everything is looking for drinkability.
Well-attenuated for a brown ale, holds up throughout the glass. If you like the style, this will get your attention with its hopping. If you like the style and American fruity hops, you'll love this.

Had this on tap at the El Paso, TX location.
A: Served a mahogany color with a tan head that faded to decent lacing.
S: Aroma of roasted malt and nutty with a hint of chocolate sweetness.
T: Taste was a mixture of roasted malt and nuts with a mild chocolate sweetness and touch of bitterness and a fairly dry finish.
F: Medium body, smooth and creamy. Has a nice balance.
D: Another nice beer from BJ's. this brew went well with my pizza. Worth a try.

Part of the sample flight in Daytona branch.
Sight - quite red, a white head on top.
Smell - very faint traces of cocoa, no noticeable hops
Taste - sweet malty nuttiness, some cocoa, again lacking a hoppy bite.
Sweet - 3/5
Bitter - 1/5
This beer was unbalanced in my opinion, really could have used a bit more hoppiness in the background just to cut through the sweetness.

Reviewed 5/9/2006 (Tap @ BJ's, CL):
Pours a dark red/brown colored body, fizzy. Has a smallish head, tan yellow in color. An aroma of malts, and strong hops. But not a very strong aroma. Has a strong nutty stouty taste. Fizzy palate, fresh tasting. Some hops.

Sampled this on 4/23/08. Dark brown colored with a decent tan head and some lacing on the glass. The beer is sugary sweet tasting with some malts and a touch of bitter hops. Pretty good brown ale but it's just a little too sweet and sugary for my liking.

Served on tap in non-frosted pint glass.
This brown ale was very dark, almost black and opaque with a 1/4 inch tan head.
Stong malty aroma with some fresh hop odor.
The ale had a strong malty backbone with hints of molasses and a noticeable licorice taste. This was quite unlike most brown ales I have tasted, both American and British. Dispite the sweetness, the ale never becomes cloying because of the hop presence.
This was a medium bodied ale that left an after taste of licorice and malts on the tongue.
This was far from my favorite interpretation of an ale style I rarely drink. If I am in the mood, I prefer the style of Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale. I had one pint and that was enough. Certainly worth trying, If this is one of your favorite styles.

Perhaps my favorite beer yet at BJs. Pours a dark brown to maroon with a lasting tan head. Smell is very nutty, and toasty malt. Taste is similar and nutty with a hint of hops. A bit watery but not as much as some others. Creamy, easy drinking and simple, but a nice brown ale overall.

Sample at the Columbus location. Clear dark brown color with a medium off-white head that has decent retention. Stringy lacing. The aroma is nutty and has malty characteristics as well. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture. The flavor is sweet malt, nuts and soft hops. The finish is mildly bitter and does not linger much. Aside from the clever name, it is average all around.
