Notes/Commercial Description:
BJ's Abbey Normal is what the Belgian's call a Dubbel (or Double Ale), which is the most popular style of Abbey Ale. This historic beer style is traditionally brewed by Trappist Monks in Belgium. A full-bodied, light brown ale with a fruity flavor profile, the unique bouquet of fruit and spice comes from fermentation with an authentic Trappist yeast.

On tap at BJ’s in Allen, Texas. The beer pours a medium amber color with a tan head. The aroma is very sweet, with a lot of toffee and candy sugar. The flavor is very similar. The toffee and nuttyness goes pretty well with the candy sugar. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Decent, but nothing too great.

Pours a light brown color that darkens to a mahogany in the glass. Served with a sepia-tan cap of less than a finger but with decent stickiness. Some lacing remains. Solid appearance.

Aromas come mostly from the malty side, with a fair dose of raisin and fig. Brown sugar for complexity, dextrose-sweetness. Brew salts. Fairly subdued and less than complex for it's style.

At 6.6%, this is going to be a light dubbel anyway, and the carbonation is dialed way up compared to the flavor. Definitely for mainstream American palates, which is fine in its own way. Not going to make any money for pushing boundaries at BJ's. This one got made, and I enjoyed it.

Definitely light in the flavor profile. The dark fruit again, slightly phenolic. Sweetness is there, but far from the macerated fruit smoothie richness of the finer Belgians. Carbonated water and brew salts peek their heads and retreat. Medium-light body, pretty thin for style but it works for drinkability. Cherry cola notes.

Like I said, if it's not thinner and less sweet than Westmalle, this one doesn't make money and doesn't get made. These are understandable compromises, and just know them going in. Our bartender told us that they've made several annual batches of Abbey Normal and that this was a "light" batch, so your mileage may vary. Decent beer.

Poured at BJs in Henderson, NV April 19, 2011.
Dark brown but can see through it still- hazy. Light tan head, light lacing.
Smells like light spice, clove, yeast, citrus/fruit.
T - light tasting dark fruit, refreshing clove and spice, yeasty, citrusy.
M & D - overcarbonated but so are a lot of brews here. Not as heavy, tasteful as I thought it would be for the style. Good all around though.
