Sampled on tap at BJs Tucson on Broadway; October 2011
The beer arrives from the tap with a one finger thick, pale tan colored head that leaves some nice lacing on the sides of the glass. The beer is a copper-red color and quite clear. The aroma has a touch of crystal malt character to it up front, this is backed by notes of pine and sharp citrus-oil grapefruit character. The citrus comes out more as the beer warms up warms and contributes notes of tangelo zest and lychee. The nose is nice especially after it opens up and I get the feeling that this would smell much better if it wasn’t in a pint glass.

The beer has a bitter bite to it as it first hits my palate; it is quite dry and after the first sip flavors of citrus and a touch of tropical fruit begins to come out, though it still remains quite dry. The hops contributes flavors of grapefruit, perhaps a hint lychee, some tangelo zest, caramelized pine (the crystal malt helps contribute to this note), a slight herbal note, but more of a floral character. The mouthfeel is quite spritzy as this has a lively carbonation that provides an amply prickly sensation as it rolls across the tongue. The body is quite quaffable; this is light, but still has a viscous quality to it that keeps it from seeming watery. This is definitely a hop dominated beer, but a touch of malt does come through by contributing notes of toasted cracker, and some biscuit like crystal malt character.

This beer is pretty enjoyable; it is nice and dry, with a biting, hoppy character that works well. Having said that, the hop-head in me thinks that this could certainly use an even more ample hop character.
