Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into a snifter. The beer is a large fluffy tan head that overflows the glass even with a gentle pour. I take just a little off appearance due to the overfoaming on the pour.
The beer is a rich chocolate brown color with mild garnet highlights when held up to the light.
Aroma is a little chocolate and some anice, a little spicy hop character mixed in the background.
First sip reveals an average body with crisp texture and very fine dense carbonation that gives an overall enjoyable feel to the beer.
Flavor is a little roasted malt and some dark chocolate, this moves to a little spicy hops and finishes with roasted malt that lingers on the palate. The anice on the nose doesnt show up on the flavor.
No hint of booze and very easy to drink as my bottle is almost gone before finishing the review.
A tasty crisp black ale that is interesting and flavorful and not overwhelming in complexity.
Worth drinking if you like malt and clean beers.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams nonick.

a: Black with clear ruby highlights in the bottom when viewed through light. Enormous tan head required additional pours to fill the glass, receding excruciatingly slowly to seemingly impenetrable thick surface foam and dense 3-D lacing.

s: Licorice and dark malt.

t: Sharp hop bite over a licorice-like dark malt base. Licorice as well as bitterness linger on the tongue. Bitter finish. Later the licorice is replaced by black coffee flavor from the dark malt.

m: Moderate. Most of the carbonation seems to have been released on the pour to form the gigantic head.

o: If you like a head on your beer all the way through drinking it, you should be pleased with this. It's otherwise a pretty average black ale with some porterish claims, although the licorice early on is somewhat unusual.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Picked up as a single in CT.

Pours dark black with an absurd amount of off white foam. Over 3 inches and lengthy settling, and dont blame the pour.Coffee pine nose. Earthy. Completely over carbonated mouthfeel. Once that settles, it becomes a dirty earthy hard pine taste, strong bitter. Settles in nicely after a tough start. Up and down/.
