A hefty Black Ale with profound malt and hop complexity. Neither Stout nor Porter, it will be its own thing – full-bodied, bold and black. Flavor characteristics of dark chocolate, mocha, molasses and dark fruits. Balanced by piney citrusy notes of Pacific Northwest hops. Full-bodied and uncommonly satisfying at 7.5% alcohol.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a mild, tan head. Not all too much lacing. Aroma is balanced and surprisingly subtle. I'd like more 'oomph'. Mild, piney hops. Roast and dark sweetness. Flavor is also balanced but ambiguous. Has some hops that come mostly in pine and grass form. Lightly burnt. Definitely roasty. A touch of bitter chocolate. Finishes fairly clean. Lighter than expected in the feel. The contents of the beer are nowhere near offensive but they are very unmemorable. Yet, the creepy little pedo-clown on the tricycle lustfully riding towards me on the label makes me unhappy. That's memorable...thanks for the nightmares.

What a surprise this turned out to be on the discount shelf and checking the 4 or 5 available beers this was the right choice for me. I love a good discount beer. I was shocked when i saw the bottled date to be 9/27/2016 as this has held up very well. I'm one of those who will tell you that, sorry, your beer is not getting better as it ages. it's just getting older. But some hoppy beers may get a little better as they age, but I don't have a reference for this fresh ...

Pop the cap the aroma jumped out of the bottle, black strap molasses, chocolate noted. Taste followed, along with a very pleasant, little piney hop blast adding some good puckering. Easy drink, and overall outstanding. I'll grab another next time if still available. Spot on for what a black ale should be, and much better than rated here.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a jet black color with a two finger off white to tan foamy head that quickly dissipated leaving some messy lacing sticking to the glass. The smell had deep dark chocolate being the main part of the bitterness. Yet still piney hops bleed into graceful sweet milk chocolate. Just a tad bit more of the sweet chocolate part comes out than expected but still good for the most part. The taste was basically the spitting image of the smell. Sharp pine escorts the sweetness intothe aftertaste and rides on into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a slim sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly low allowing the bitterness to partake in the harshness party on my tongue. It gets a little dry. Overall, this was a pretty good black ale with a bit more chocolate malt than expected. Still worthy of having again.
