Style | ABV
American Black Ale |  7.50% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
A hefty Black Ale with profound malt and hop complexity. Neither Stout nor Porter, it will be its own thing – full-bodied, bold and black. Flavor characteristics of dark chocolate, mocha, molasses and dark fruits. Balanced by piney citrusy notes of Pacific Northwest hops. Full-bodied and uncommonly satisfying at 7.5% alcohol.

Appearance: moderate carbonation, 1 inch head, opaque, black in color

Smell: pine, roasted malt, and tropical fruit

Taste: rich chocolate--mostly dark with some milk chocolate, light cream, char, and a moderate amount of piney hops

Mouthfeel: Sweet start with a bitter end, medium body, high carbonation

Overall: A good American black ale that never gets too sweet or too bitter. On the complex side for the style. I would get this again, but there are others I prefer in the style.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Picked up as a single in CT.

Pours dark black with an absurd amount of off white foam. Over 3 inches and lengthy settling, and dont blame the pour.Coffee pine nose. Earthy. Completely over carbonated mouthfeel. Once that settles, it becomes a dirty earthy hard pine taste, strong bitter. Settles in nicely after a tough start. Up and down/.

12oz bottle served in a pint glass
Nearly pitch black with a dark khaki head once I'm able to get it all in the glass. This beer is incredibly foamy even with a cautious slow pour, it took several minutes to get it all poured, I'm docking a point for that. The smell is of citrus hops and malt in the form of roasted and bitter black malts with a bit of chocolate in there as well. The taste is solid and dominated by the black malts along with coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Hop flavor is limited but bitterness of this beer is relatively strong and comes from both the malt and hops. This is a nice and creamy beer some of that is contributed to by the high levels of fine bubbled carbonation the rest from the malt profile. The finish is quite dry, as throughout there is little to no apparent sweetness in this beer, and lastingly bitter. Nice drinking beer and sneakily potent as it successfully hides the 7+ ABV until after you've had a couple. I'm still getting used to this style but I'd have to say that this is one of the better examples that I've had.

On tap at gingerman sono poures into proper pint. Creamy tan head on a pitch black pour. Fruity aromas over some bitterness..passionfruit maybe? Flavor is lots of fresh fruit. .it seems like passionfruit mixed with pumpkin? Not quite sure but its pretty tasty...well unique. Smooth and creamy...very drinkable. Worth a try on tap as I think the creamyness makes the beer.
