Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: JTomczak on 11-01-2013

A hefty Black Ale with profound malt and hop complexity. Neither Stout nor Porter, it will be its own thing – full-bodied, bold and black. Flavor characteristics of dark chocolate, mocha, molasses and dark fruits. Balanced by piney citrusy notes of Pacific Northwest hops. Full-bodied and uncommonly satisfying at 7.5% alcohol.

12 oz can, with 10/19/15 on the bottom. (not the freshest sample)

Pours very dark and stout like.....dark moch along lasting head, leaves a thicker collar and some low sheeting.

Citric nose with some dark chocolate

Tasty dark IPA, lots of orange notes and again dark chocolate...not a huge fan of the style, this one is well crafted and worth a try...

Appearance: moderate carbonation, 1 inch head, opaque, black in color

Smell: pine, roasted malt, and tropical fruit

Taste: rich chocolate--mostly dark with some milk chocolate, light cream, char, and a moderate amount of piney hops

Mouthfeel: Sweet start with a bitter end, medium body, high carbonation

Overall: A good American black ale that never gets too sweet or too bitter. On the complex side for the style. I would get this again, but there are others I prefer in the style.

Two Roads Brewing Company "Route Of All Evil"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BTLD 10/27/15"

I won't go into too much detail on this one as it's a fairly straightforward black ale, black IPA, Cascadian dark ale, or whatever you want to call it.

It's hoppy in both the aroma and the flavor with delicate pine and citrus, and the malt is chocolatey and softly roasty. The additional note of molasses is fairly unique however, and the dark fruitiness (raisin, plum, currant) gives it an additional layer of complexity that's not usually found. Beyond those things it's the balance that really makes it shine. It's neither too bitter nor too sweet, and the pine and citrus notes are held back so that they don't stand out too far from the chocolatey, burnt sugar, and charred malt.

Many beers in this vein appear simply as IPA's with darker malts thrown in, but this comes off as the opposite, a strong dark beer with Pacific northwest hops thoughtfully integrated into it. Another winner from Two Roads!

This is a seriously underrated beer from Founders. This is a black IPA that is super drinkable, great malt and hop flavors. Just a really nice presentation of flavors that all work together at the right time. Again this is a highly underrated beer and a must try IMO.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Picked up as a single in CT.

Pours dark black with an absurd amount of off white foam. Over 3 inches and lengthy settling, and dont blame the pour.Coffee pine nose. Earthy. Completely over carbonated mouthfeel. Once that settles, it becomes a dirty earthy hard pine taste, strong bitter. Settles in nicely after a tough start. Up and down/.
