Two Roads Brewmaster Phil Markowski has taken a road less traveled with this rye-based version of a classic Belgian Tripel. There are unique twists and turns at every corner that give our spring seasonal its unique, fruity complexity. The beer is characteristically spicy with a dry flavor and aroma thanks to the rye. The addition of American-grown Mosaic and Amarillo hops add notes of white wine, blueberries and fruit punch. We also used a noticeably fruity/spicy yeast strain that adds characteristics of pear and clove. So take the next exit for a fruity, spicy flavor and intense hop character.

L: Poured from a growler to a goblet. Had a brown-yellow color and a hazy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Above average lacing.

S: A decent, if a little underwhelming, aroma of rye, yeast, fruit, spices, and hops.

T: Tasted of a mild amount of hops (mostly in the finish), a bit of spicy yeast, a fair amount of rye (not as much as expected), spices (cloves, pepper), and some fruit (blueberries, raspberries). Like the aroma, the taste is a little on the tame side. The rye is a good addition, but overall the flavor needs a little oomph.

F: A decent amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Kind of an uneven beer, but it has its good points. Drinkable enough.

I've enjoyed this unique Rye Tripel for several years but never formally rated it. Enjoyed it in cans ((my preference) previously but, for some reason, found only bottles this year. My only negative is that, as a seasonal, it has a very short period of availability and, in my area, is hard to find even in season. I've enjoyed many of Two Roads products but Rye 95 rates as my overall favorite from that brewery.

12 oz bottle

An almost totally clear golden color with light amber highlights. A thick, sparkling white foam "head" remains solid for a bit. Some lacy bits hang around with a very thin constant layer of coverage.

A sweet and tangy belgian type yeast aroma is pretty impressive, dense tropical red fruits has planty of sweet aroma's from the hops. Sparkling red white, white grapes, tangy citrus fruits and black pepper from the hops and holden malted barley makes this one really impress upon the olefactory senses. Some alcohol heat tingle leaves a lasting impression.

The flavor has multiple, complex aspects: The yeast, tangy and peppery, earthy and musty, the hops, dry earth followed by tropical/sweet and citrus tones with a definate chardonay grape kick. The malt is light, crisp, clean, blond to till the end with maybe a hint of sweetness and dried golden wheat. The Rye: the x factor...?seems to push the limits of what the yeast and hops can do, as all three blend together for one deep, peppery, earthy and dry overall mouthfeel and flavor punch. A dry, earthy grainy kick from the rye, malt crispness, (like honey crisp apples) fruity and earthy hops, tangy to sour yeast blend up in that order to create an honestly remarkable brew.

The mouthfeel is crisp, dry, earthy bite, lively and then robust and smooth....nearly full but dry in the finish. Sipping this is very much like drinking a fine chardonay or maybe.....a Malbec!

L: Hazy orange with a surprisingly small white head. A thin small ring is left, with some spotty lacing.

S: Ripping orange zest, a little banana and clove, straw, biscuit.

T: Tons of orange peel throughout, a banana bread body with some straw, slightly peppery with some clove on the finish. Very floral. Lightly sweet, then lightly dry. Well-balanced.

F: Medium-full bodied. Smooth. Medium-light carbonation.

O: A really good rye tripel. Well-balanced, well-hidden abv.

Nice dense goldenrod hue. Very smooth with it being 9.5 ABV. Solid citrus flavor, a very good interpretation of a tripel.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Look is an orange amber with a head that dissipates quickly.

Lots of spicy rye on the aroma.

Taste is incredibly light for a high abv beer. Nice Belgian take on a rye beer.

DATE: July 16, 2017... OCCASION: watching Liberating a Continent with Shan after a beautiful summer day spent with Bob and the family... GLASSWARE: Chimay chalice... pours a yellow amber body with active effervescence, yet opaque enough to blur vision through it... the head is white, single-fingered, and frothy, with creamy arcs around its lip... pepper, clove, berry, floral hop, pear, and lemon make for the premise of an engaging flavor cocktail... at first sip, strikes the teeth with a soft hammer, tingling the tongue and lingering at the throat with a dry, honeyed finish... medium-bodied at best, with the subtlety of its 9.5% ABV cloaked in the smooth, inviting draw... clove, pear, honey, varied herbs, lemongrass, and apple provide a quality--but not overpowering--profile... a unique take on the style that often is too often impeccable to my taste... falls just short of a must-have, but definitely is a treat in a mix-twelve I luckily purchased....

This was poured into a chalice. The appearance was a bronzed light copper color with a thin white cap of a head. Messy lacing. The smell takes the rye in a nice spicy sort of way. Bubblegum, light citrus, light breadiness, some blueberries (but that comes across super light). The taste follows the aroma more combined between the spiciness and the sweet. Dry spicy rye to bubblegum aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body. Carbonation felt good. Semi-dry spice hits in the harshness. Overall, I’d say it was pretty good as a tripel. I could see myself coming back to it.
