Applying some tricks and trades learned from Lambic brewing, the brewers of Two Roads get to work in creating an American-styled lambic that's brewed in wild ale fashion for a taste that hopes to compete with those from Brussels.
Laid upon a ton of Montmorency cherries, their "Area Two" Kriek pours with a dark mauve and glowing crimson that's nearly bright in appearance. Its striking scent of but juicy and dry cherries bring out winey tone with musty, basement-like scents, weathered oak and dry leather. Juicy and scantly sweet early in taste, its a flavor of hard cherry candies that come with a slim cobbler-like breadiness with wafer-thin malts.
As the flavors splash against the middle palate, its malty influence dissolves immediately and leaves the brunt of sourness to strike the tastebuds unabashed. Focusing on the distinctive and succulent fruit, it invites additional notes of red currant, cranberry, red grape and plum while the undercurrent of acidity brings strong briney flavors with crabapple, lime, grapefruit and rice-wine vinegar. A late spice of hops lay a light bitterness from oak, hay and vinous pectins.
Light in body, the beer's early juiciness develops into a quick dryness of extended age red wines and a piquant sourness to create a highly thirst quenching, refreshing session with moderate notes of funk and fauna. Brief echoes of cherry and wine persist shortly in aftertaste.

375ml corked and caged bottle poured into a geuze tumbler appears a golden color with offwhite cap that is quick to fade.
Aroma is fruity with cherry pits and lemony lacto. A bit of oak and bretty earthen aspect.
Taste is tart and earthen with a mild bitterness akin to unripe cherries. There is a brett aspect present tasting akin to leather and is a bit horsey.
Medium body witg modest carbonation. A classic tasting and stylistically impressive take on kriek. This is a fine brew id love to drink again.

Just popped open a one year old bottle of Gueuze and Kriek during a sour tasting. Surprisingly, the Two Roads sours were able to hold their own! The Gueuze definitely out shined the Kriek but the Kriek was still very solid. The cherries hit from the front to the finish.

375ml green bottle, sample from the brewery.
Very active carbonation produces a good amount of head, this subsides to a thin ring of lace. Great clarity with a amber-rose hue. Smells of fresh tart cherries & lemon pith with a light funk. Deep crispness, lighter body. big puckering tartness with cherry flavor within. A kiss of funk on the breath, lemon peel and a bit of very dry malt on the palate in the middle. Finish cleans up pretty quick, the tartness is pretty intense but can be expected even at these levels for the style. A little disjointed IMO but was still a treat to taste.

Batch 1, bottle 199.
Pours a light pink, with high carbonation but poor head retention.
Aroma is fruit and wild aromatics with some acetic acid. Little to no Barrell character, appropriately for the style.
Taste is bracingly sour. Does not have a ton of cherry flavor but what is there is pleasant and adds to the overall complexity of the beer.
Overall this is a very good first step for two roads as far as fruit sours goes. The flaws in this beer are minor and the overall balance and impression of the beer is very good, although this is a firmly American interpretation of a kriek, and doesn't really compete with the traditional Belgian lambic Oude krieks, which tend to have a much more intense cherry character.

It's an alright take at the Lambic style... but calling it a Lambic and Kriek just rubs me the wrong way (tradionalist) and also gives me an excuse to compare it directly to real lambics which of course it still has a long way to go. It's a decent spontaneously fermented ale from two roads, but the palate didn't live up to the nose and certainly didn't have anywhere near the level of funk, acidity, complexity, or tartness of a good authentic Kriek. Still, I like what they are doing there.
