The Two Roads version of this traditional beer style takes a road less traveled. It’s unfiltered and uses wheat as the dominant malt backbone. The result is a slightly cloudy, pale IPA with a softer mouthfeel that accentuates the citrusy Pacific Northwest hop character.

Top reviewers hover around a "4" for this brew. I like the east coast brewer a lot.

A: Pale hazed golden straw liquid w 1 finger head but abundant lace. Fizzy and fine as wheat should be. Fast goes flattish.

S: Ample, floral, grainy, bready, with white cracker, citrus fruit and a hint of honey.

T: Bready, up front, with floral and citrus flavors mid arc, then hops, bringing honeysuckle flowers.

F: Medium body with moderate, prickly, carbonation

Liked it less 2nd time but better the 3rd time around. Good food beer. Kind of like an IPL. Gotta be in the mood for it.

Two twelve ounce cans have been emptied into a clear glass liter mug. For a wheat dominate malt backbone, the pours were surprisingly genteel. There was no ridiculous stark white foam to deal with. The aroma at the cracking open of the cans was sweet, but hops were there, too. By looks, this sure could pass for a Pilsner. It has a very light and bright amber color and saying it's fairly translucent might be an understatement. Quickly headless, it does show abundant carbonation. The sweet and mild hoppy aroma seems to have mostly.dissipated. Initially, this is no taste treat, as it's mostly superficially sweet, like white bread. Saving face for the taste, there's a great transition to biting piney and resinous hops. That bite extends well past a normal finish. A little alcohol burn is in there, too. Unfortunately, relying on wheat, especially without much help from either oats or barley, usually ends up with a too thin body. That's the major problem here, a commendable AIPA hopping that has little counterbalance and runs across the tongue too thinly. There are so many better AIPAs available, some even dare to include the original IPA malt, barley.

Very basic IPA. 6% but taste a lot less. Unfortunately pretty weak and just not memorable. Probably a good starting IPA for people not use to IPA’s.

Pours a slightly cloudy honey gold with a thick but short-lived white head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is very faint, citrus and biscuit. Flavor follows the nose, with a little hop bitterness in the finish. Feel is light bodied with only adequate carbonation. Overall, Meh. Drinkable but not worth seeking out.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed yellow-amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head fades slowly over time and leaves one with a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a grapefruit aroma mixed with a bit of breadiness and some grain. Along with these smells comes a little bit of hay and a touch of herb.
Taste – The taste begins with a moderately crisp grainy and bready flavor mixed with notes of grapefruit hop and a bit of herb. There is also a light caramel flavor mixed with a touch of woodiness. As the taste advances the sweet fades all while the grain and hop get slightly stronger, leaving one with a moderately hopped and more crisp taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium to light with a higher carbonation level. Great for the style and making it an easy drinker.
Overall – A rather nice, slightly more crisp, and very approachable IPA.

From the IPA variety pack. BB date : 25 JAN 23.

Slightly hazy medium gold with slight orange tint. Light white head that leaves a thin ring, and no lacing. (3.5)

Aromas of orange, lemon, and lime, leaning to candied, rather than fresh. Slight crackery malt. (3.75)

Taste is mostly grapefruit, with a bit of lime zest and pineapple. Moderate bitterness. (3.5)

Feel is medium, with occasional flashes of slight syrupiness , but also a brief watery sensation just after initial taste. A bit odd, in that. Moderate, very fine, sharp carbonation bite. (3.5)

Overall, it's OK, and enjoyable, especially as a palate-break after heavier/maltier fare. Not something I'd seek out as a separate thing, but as a small part of a mix pk, it's fine. (3.75)

[Edit] 1/6/23 , with a batch with BB 4/10/23, so a month fresher than that reviewed above. Much better . Ratings reflect current beer. Old ratings noted after each description. The watery feel mentioned above isn't present . (I wonder if that batch was under-carbonated somehow.) The flavor leans more to orange & grapefruit rind, + a slight bit of dank green onion (a la Amarillo hops) , & is mainstream IPA flavor. Nothing odd about it. I WOULD get this as a stand-alone, if I saw it fresh. :)

Look...light brown beer like color with a little bit of haze
Smell...Yeast and citrus hop with melon and grass. a simple fruity
Taste...a sweet initial offering quickly retracted to a dry and bitter finish. A beer that is def bitter with a west coast style finish
Feel....Thinner juice but with the 6 percent it had plenty of body. adequate carbonation and white head
Overall...This beer is good and quenched my thirst but not sure if I will get separately of the variety pack. Not bad just about session IPAs that much

Given as a gift. But very disappointed. Color is between clear and hazy. Taste is simple but nothing definitive. Overall just another beer for the day

(12 oz can, BBE 18NOV21; purchased cold as part of IPA variety pack... poured into a clean, fat tulip)

L: unfiltered but not hazy, pale honey-amber liquid; foam fizzy and fleeting... thin collar, little lacing

S: floral-scented, pastry-like malt and spice... edge and expression dies off with the degradation of foam... rather weak intensity by the time of first sip... dull and pissy by the end

T: sort of bread-like, oaty(?) malt up front; peppery-spicy, grapefruit-ed hoppy core... this continues and degrades

F: light-bodied, spritzy, immediately following an airy, round swell up front... halfway through, it's flat and dull

O: bold biting spice, moderate bitterness, but muted, muddy, mutated and ultimately without personality... either this variety pack was not properly stored (poor foam retention; thin, dry profiles), or the recipes/ingredients and execution are tossed off, lazy... too much post-ferm clean-up? too much contract brewing?... This is my experience now, but I'll reserve dismissal until I try these again later; didn't know it was wheat-dominant till after the fact, ugh (1793)
