Style | ABV
Russian Imperial Stout |  10.90% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
In honor of Stratford’s aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, we’ve created this most unorthodox Russian Imperial Stout. Made with rye and aged in oak whiskey barrels that give it a depth of character like no other, we think Igor would be pleased with the attention to detail in our creation.

Had on tap at the brewery--served into a tulip

Appearance: black in color, 1 inch head, opaque, low carbonation

Smell: roasted malt, chocolate, and whiskey

Taste: dark and sweet chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, whiskey, then a big dose of oak

Mouthfeel: heavy bodied, medium-low carbonation, chewy, sweet with light bitterness due to the oaking

Overall: This beer is phenomenal. I think it may be my new favorite RIS and is certainly in my top 10 of any style. I love the oaking and the deep vanilla taste. The flavors come out one by one and jump and the beer becomes more complex as it warms. I would certainly pick some up if you can find it. That said, I do think the $20 price tag is a bit high for any beer, but...If you are ok with paying those prices, this one did not disappoint. The best beer from the brewery so far.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high dark tan head that died down, leaving wispy lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass. Lacing is also prevalent down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of whiskey are present in the nose—these become stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste has flavors of dark malts with strong flavors of oak and notes of whiskey from the barrel aging. The whiskey flavors linger through the finish.
M: It feels full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The whiskey lends warming sensations to your mouth.
O: The whiskey barrel aging really makes this beer have interesting aromas and flavors. It is quite drinkable considering its strength.

On-tap 3/11/2014 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a short brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains roasted malts, some chocolate and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a bitter-sweet flavor of dark chocolate. Then a hearty but not too heavy roasted malt character comes in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a very good balance. The after-taste is bitter-sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a very good big stout to drink for a long time.

On tap at New York Pizza. Pours a pitch black color with over an inch of dark brown head. Some lacing. The aroma is booze with some vanilla, oak, chocolate and toffee. The taste is booze and chocolate upfront followed by some oak roasted malts, sweet coffee and toffee. Hints of smoke, earth. Creamy mouthfeel. Doesn't taste as hot as I thought it would. A bit earthy. I didn't get to grab a bottle of this when it was released at the brewery so I'm glad I got a chance to have it on tap. Overall, solid Imperial Stout.
