Doing a shoot-out between a growler of this (yo Dave) and Rogue's Dad's Little Helper...

A: Black.

S: Spicy pine/citrus hops and smooth malt

T: Very very good - incredibly smooth considering how black this beer is. Piney hops blend with mild toffee/smooth malt.

M: Creamy!

O: I haven't had many Black IPA's that made me want another but this is an exception. The Rogue beer we compared had a much more astringent aftertaste and while it's a worthy beer, not as impressive.

The beer comes in a dark brown/black color with a frothy white head.

The aroma has citrus, deep pine, sweet caramel malt, and as it warms up, you get tons of coffee and chocolate malt.

The beer hits you with what I think is Chinook. It has earthy pine and a bit of citrus of orange and grapefruit. However, there’s tons of chocolate malt and some spice in there.

There is a light/medium body that keeps it drinkable.

The beer is a great take on the Black IPA style. There’s tons of chocolate malt with the earthy hops. One of my favorite beers by Singlecut.

I'm not an expert but this beer had an awesome chocolaty, toasty, roasted flavor. The appearance was black, it was strange because from the aroma and mouthfeel (creamy) it was almost like drinking a stout but at the same time, from the hoppiness and aroma it was also like drinking an IPA. I loved that those different profiles were at play.

Kudos to Single Cut for trying something different, I've never had a black-IPA before but this one was definitely something I'd drink again.

On draft at Hoptron Brewtique, Patchogue, NY.

Poured a deep brown hue with a one finger foamy tan head. There was decent retention and good lacing.

The smell featured roasted malts, charcoal and a piney hop.

The taste consisted of black malt, cocoa, charcoal and a touch of lactose tempered by a grassy and slightly piney hop.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a tasty malt driven Black IPA.

Small pour at Fool's Gold in NYC.

Pours a deep mahogany brown color with an inch of light tan head and low carbonation evident. Very malty, some light hops but not as much as other top notch Black IPA's. Decent but not my favorite.
