No stranger to the ghost bike phenomenon, I see them daily on my own bike commute.

Lightly hazed orange shot through with steady rising carb trails. One fingers width of foam on the surface that manages to stick around for awhile, depositing stray arcs of dripping lace around the sides. Creamy surface texture.

Mildly sweet melon notes in the aroma, softly fruity with a vague undercurrent of pale malt underneath. Pretty understated and mellow, not a pungent smell but a pleasant one.

Soft and supple feel, easy to drink and a shade under medium-bodied. Hop derived notes of melon and light spice, a dry earthy hop bitterness builds in the finish. Nice balance of mellow sweetness and bitterness, neither is too dominant. Overall a nice easy drinking pale ale with some unique hop character, would drink again.

Batch 12

A: Pours a clear golden - sits in the glass a murky/hazier gold. Great head, sticks to the glass beautifully, some legs.

S: Big sweet grapefruit, orange and mango - some astringency. Slightly resinous and piney - very slight mint.

T: More sticky and resinous than expected, but not incredibly so. Very refreshingly bitter grapefruit peel and orange - there is some sweetness that balances out along with bready malt.

P: Very smooth and pretty big (solid medium body) for an APA. Soft carbonation.

O: 7.3% APA? if you say so. Really great beer - well balanced, refreshing, and interesting.

Batch 13 - added dry hopping, I believe. A step above for sure - fantastic pale ale

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Handwritten Batch #40 inside of a planchette with a cool Ouija board themed label. My second beer from the new local brewery Spiteful Brewing out of Chicago. Expectations are moderately high.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours one finger of creamy fluffy off-white head on top of a beautiful bright orange colored body. Thin spotty lacing. Looks vibrant and great.

S - Mmmm, smells very nice also. Lots of big bright tropical fruits & florals, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, green apple, grass, cream, caramel, some soapiness, and some musty yeast.

T - Taste follows the nose: bitter grapefruit / orange, sweet tea leafiness, caramel apples, and herbal earthiness. Delicious.

M - Feel is smooth and creamy, with lots of bitter and resinous pine & grapefruit hops lingering on the palate. Delicious.

Overall, another wonderful beer from Spiteful Brewing. By the looks of how things are going, these guys are shaping up to be the next Pipeworks. Very glad I decided to pick this up before it was too late. Highly recommended.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

I've never noticed one of these ghost bikes in the City before, but, then again, I'm never paying all that much attention to my surroundings down there... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear straw topped by over a finger of lightly cream-white foam. The nose comprises grapefruit zest, tangerine zest, light lime peel, and a soft backbone of sweet biscuit. Things are decidedly hoppy, yet somewhat restrained and balanced, sure not to blast the nostrils with too much. The taste holds notes of slightly-funky lemon peel, dark-and-spicy-and-earthy greens (very tobacco-like), sweet biscuit, light honey, and a splash of grapefruit rind. Those tobacco greens seem to wanna be remembered forever, leaving behind a strong, lingering bitterness throughout the finish and aftertaste. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, a nice pale ale, though the exquisite promise of the smell is never truly fulfilled. Still, it's solid enough to warrant another go, should the opportunity arise.

Pours a dark golden orange color with a finger length head that goes away slowly and leaves a ring of lacing. Moderate carbonation coming off the glass. Smells of tangerine, grass, floral, grapefruit, and a sweet and doughy breadiness. Taste starts with some grapefruit and tangerine. Moderate sweetness from the beginning. The middle brings more maltiness. Biscuit and carmel come into play along with more grapefruit, as well as lemon and now more like orange zest rather than tangerine. Taste finishes with a lot of orange zest, grapefruit, some lemon, some pine, sweet carmel, and a biscuitiness. Not too astringent on the finish, as the citrus flavors dominate and last on the palate; however it is pretty dry. Pretty well balanced as well. Medium body with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel. More like an IPA than a pale ale. Not too bad.

Appearance: A dried grass light brown color to this APA. About a finger worth of carbonation on the pour and a above average carbonation activity throughout. Beer seems to glow with a brighter orange when put to light.

Smell: There is a light breezy sweetness going on here. Bubble gum, taffy, sugary sweetness. Average to below average hop presence overall. Feels a little one dimensional but is a very pleasant aroma so no real harm here.

Taste: Ultra smooth hop front on this brew. Then the sweetness felt in the aroma really pops in the body. A jolly rancher sweetness is pleasantly mixed with a earthy hop presence. The finish is a lingering hop dryness with a slight funk from the hops. Certainly a lot going on here which keeps the palette guessing.

Mouthfeel: Sweet and smooth. Goes down so easy for a 7.3% abv APA. A dryness that sneaks up on you as you get toward the end of the bottle.

Overall: Sign me up for this all day. Easy drinking with some great complexity. There are some great things going on with these emerging Chicago breweries.
