Literally in the fridge less than an hour after it was delivered to the Beer Temple yesterday.
Just about as fresh as can be...

Deep and bright orange color, high clarity with some visible carb trails rising in the glass. Surface skim breaks apart after a few sips.

Hugely citrus forward aroma, orange, tangerine, grapefruit. Very pungent and super fresh.

Taste is also citrus heavy, dank and pungent with a hint of earthy tropical papaya/mango notes. Medium bodied and smooth, moderate bitterness, lingering papaya in the middle and aftertaste. Dry in the aftertaste, supple feel, with a well hidden abv. Overall this is probably Spiteful's best beer to date. Seems like their answer to Pipeworks NvU.

Overall 90/100

Great DIPA, right away reminds me of Dreadnaught. All the normal IPA tastes (Citrus, Pine etc...) Also has a big boozy presence. Maybe a bit too much to keep it from being an elite contender amongst the big dogs of the DIPA world. World class aroma for what that's worth~

22 oz bomber courtesy of clewis901 pours an uber clear copper color with an ample cap of white head. Nice retention and lace...the foam is really stiff and dense.

Nose is uber-tropical and citric...smells like Citra if you axe me...wow. A great hop forward aroma with the malts tailing along for fun in a honey drizzled biscuit kinda way

Taste is bigger and more bitter than the friendly nose would indicate. You can tell this mutha is 10+% ABV. The hop favor is off the charts...hop bitterness is low...Citra signs fo sho! The ABV is incredibly well hidden...until it get warm. I like It, but it is a bit astringent...prolly due to the high abv and low malt presence. I like it but the more I drink Citra beers the more I think they need a little sumpin sumpin to keep the complexity alive. Mix this with some Amarillo and we might have something.

Appearance: Nice light golden/caramelly. Ton's of lacy, but that's what I would expect with a 10 percenter.

Smell: Smell bites the nostrils. Initially it is a biting sweet smell. There is a lot of nice piney and citrus combination going on. Its sweet pine and citrus zest almost. It's biting my nose!

Taste: A nice 50/50 of malt backbone and hops. It tastes sweet but with those pine flavors carried over as well. Exact amount of bitterness I want to support the ABV and hops. The hop flavor doesn't shine as much as it did in the nose but still tasty.

Mouthfeel: Heavy and sticky. Its a big beer.

Overall: Wow, I am really happy with this. It isn't blowing my mind per se, but a big bruiser citra hopped IPA. Heavy on sweet orangey flavor, some pineyness, and a heavy malt back bone taboot. Yum.

Appearance: light orange color. Thin to no head on the pour and was not present while drinking. Low carbonation active while drinking. Very clean looks, has all the points of a big DIPA.

Smell: Bright hops hit the nose right away. Accents of mangos, strawberries, and kiwis. The hops certainly do not stand on their own, a balanced medium bodied malt backbone really makes this aroma pop.

Taste: The front of this beer is an incredibly clean and distinct hop profile that goes undisturbed and allows the drinker to simply enjoy it, bursting with juicy citrus hop flavor. The hops round out in the body of the beer and combine seamlessly with the sweet malty presence. The finish is a medium dryness that seems to come from the high ABV of this brew. Love the front and body of this beer, like the finish.

Mouthfeel: An event for the palate, incredibly hoppy front, malty body, and pretty boozy finish.

Overall: Really excellent beer, Spiteful continues to produce incredibly high quality IPAs and APAs. I love how well they showcase Citra hops in this brew. The hops are very well backed up by a great malt backbone. My only gripe, and a small one at that is the 10.4% does seem to pop out a little more then desired. Through and through though, an awesome beer.

Hop aroma detected as soon as bottle was opened. Tasted fresh and clean and is everything I look for in and IPA.

Thanks to Wowcoolman for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a solid citrus forward hop presence in the aroma and flavor.

Appearance - pours a slightly hazy golden amber with a finger's worth of white foam that dissipates to a shallow layer after a few minutes. Minimal, very delicate lacing.

Aroma- I'm not getting a huge of nose on this pour. I can smell the Citra hops (orange & grapefruit) easily. There's an aroma of tropical fruits (pineapple mainly). A very small note of caramel malt.

Taste- wonderfully balanced hop profile. Lots of grapefruit, orange zest and tropical fruit on the tongue. Very hop forward (as usual for Spiteful) but also extremely well done. A bit of malt on the back. Very easy to drink. Almost too easy because the hidden booziness sneaks up on you on it's tail.

Mouthfeel & finish- medium with a moderate, hop forward finish. A decent amount is carbonation gives it a needed crispness

Probably my favorite offering from this brewery so far.

Poured into a tulip glass from a 22oz bottle.

Pours a very gorgeous bright orange/deep copper color. There is a nice clean white head that forms of about 1 inch tall with some nice dense tight bubbles.

Arom of fresh Citra hops. Notes of orange rind and tangerine notes. Pretty grassy and herbal with a nice resinous background to it. There are some nice sweet orange notes in the nose and a pretty hefty caramel undertone to it as well. Nose is grassy, hopy and hefty.

Starts off with some resinous pine notes that quickly turn into intense bitter and acidic citrus notes. Nice notes of fresh orange and tangerine notes. This is mixed in with some nice slight malty and caramel sweetness. The finish of the brew is nice and bitter with a great citrusy dry finish.

Overall this is a yummy DIPA. Its pretty hopy but balanced well by the resinous piney notes and the citrus as well as some nice malt body to it.

22oz Bomber
$9.99
Binny's, Bolingbrook

Batch #54

Spiteful is a crystal clear tarnished copper IIPA with an insanely creamy off white head. Thick lacing is left behind even as the head settles, not to mention all the remnants after each drink. Messenger is a mighty fine looking beer.

The nose is a hophead's delight. Dank resinous qualities intermingle with huge tropical fruitiness. Lactic, sweet papaya and mango, grapefruit, and overripe pineapple all make their presence known. How can citra be so potent? There's not much of a malt backbone noticeable in the nose. This beer is straight hop profile.

The flavor has all the same qualities as the nose. Seamlessly integrated mango, papaya, overripe grapefruit, and dank resinous all make for a crazy hop forward profile with a moderate bitterness. There's a whisper of caramel maltiness but that's it. Citra provides a ton of depth and the alcohol is so well hidden I'd guess this weighs in around 7.5%.

I'm met with a moderate body, none of the sweetness found in a majority of IIPAs this size. Firm bitterness hits right up front but mellows as it works over my palate. Smooth carbonation and a velvety body wrap things up nicely.

Messenger is one of the better IIPAs I've come across in awhile. It's good to have these guys on the shelves. I won't hesitate to pick this up again in the future. Nice homage to the messengers out there.

bomber into a teku glass. Batch 48

Pours a hazy copper color with an inch thick white head with no lacing. Mild citrus hoppy aroma on the nose, not very intense which is a bit surprising but also quite refreshing. Dig the nose a lot here. The taste is quite fruity and sweet...but not buttery per say. Good amount of grapefruit bitterness on the back end, this actually has a very complex flavor profile. sweet at first and ends with a good amount of bitterness. Medium bodied, mild carbonation.

Overall a very good DIPA! Spiteful has impressed me more and more with every beer i try from them. Recommended

A: Very clear orange-copper in color. Froms a moderate sized white head. Decent retention - eventually falls to a patchy surface coating and a thick ring around the edge. Light lacing.

S: Aroma is pungent and hop forward. Mostly citrus, orange and grapefruit, but there is a touch of both pine and tropical fruit in the background.

T: Taste is also very nice. Mildly sweet with lots of juicy, citrus hops. Orange dominates, but there are notes of grapefruit, citrus peel, candied kumquats, and some light pine. Boozy with fusel spice on the back end.

M: Medium bodied. Mild-to-moderate bitterness. Medium carbonation. Fairly appreciable alcoholic heat on the finish.

O: Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this beer, but it turned out pretty good. Nicely unbalanced and hop heavy with an alcoholic punch.

Batch #34. Poured from a bottle into a snifter.

Appearance: Beautiful dark gold with a finger of white head that maintains throughout the brew, leaving lacing the whole way down.

Smell: Huge citrus nose. Grapefruit, lemon and other tropical fruits. Just a touch of pine if you look for it.

Taste: Big, juicy citra hops in this one. Some pine and floral notes are in there, but this is a citra bomb. Hides the alcohol very well. Definitely doesn't taste like a 10 percenter. Not a lot of hop bitterness here. Well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Juicy and sticky. Like biting into a piece of fruit.

Overall: Another damn good beer from Spiteful. This is a pretty new brewery but everything I've had from them is good to very good. Ill definitely be seeking this out again.
