Consumed at the brewery tasting room, April 20th, 2014.

Beer is a clear medium yellow with a creamy, fine, white one-finger head.

Aroma is dank, earthy and fruity (guava).

Flavor is sweeter than expected; some crystal malt flavor. Tropical fruit note. Significant bitterness on the finish.

Medium-bodied. Astringent on the finish.

As double IPAs go, pretty middle-of-the-pack.

32 oz. growler poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep clear orange. Small white head. Thin collar.

Smell - Lots of deep caramel malt. I really don't get a lot of hops. I guess it's Nelson hops, but it's really indistinct.

Taste - Sweet tropical hops. And then lots of sweet caramel malt. Astringent alcohol. Sweet finish.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation. Medium heavy.

Overall - I don't know if this growler didn't do so well, but this isn't very good. Other Rip Current growlers I've had have been quite good, but not this one.

On draft at my local craft brew spot.
Light golden color, little head. Floral, citrus, grapefruit nose. Hop forward, strong pine and citrus flavor. Finish is hoppy with a little alcohol finish. Nice flavor, nice caramel malty balance.

The trend at Rip Current seems to be using hops of a tropical aroma nature, but also balancing things with West Coast attributes we've come to expect and love such as citrus and pine. The question remained, until now, how they would apply this to a big fat Double IPA with over 10% alcohol? The answer is a delicious one. Beer pours blonde, with only a bit of white head, which is fine as per the style. The beer rests full bodied in the mouth, making for a sipper, but the slight head present from the alcohol immediately is over-whelmed by tastes of citrus, passion fruit, and pine, finishing mostly dry with a subordinate malt backbone, which nonetheless allows the hops to shine foremost. This is another home run to me. Call it a homer vote, but this beer is great!

Had on draft at 50/50 slaters SD on 4/2/14 in a tulip

A-Pours bright gold with a creamy white head. Great lacing.

S-Lots of dank citrus in the nose, grapefruit, a bit of grass.

T-Medium to big sweet flavor with lots more dank, well ripened citrus fruits, mango, grapefruit, papaya, grass, orange.

M-Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming and resinous to finish with lasting dank hop character.

O-Overall a great DIPA. My first one in SD! Went well with the burger!
