Consumed at the brewery tasting room, April 20th, 2014.
Black beer with a fine medium-tan head. Nice sheeting.
Aroma is dark and roasty with coffee and baking chocolate notes.
Flavor is much the same: bitter chocolate up front, dark roasted grain then coffee bitterness on the finish.
Don't know if there is oatmeal in this beer, but the mouthfeel is slightly chewy and agreeable thicker than normal. Some alcohol heat.
Overall, decent stab at the style without having anything unique to set it apart.

Sampled a couple of times from a baby snifter, which was the only option for this beer at the brewery. Pours very dark black, with a nice sized tan head, which falls quickly, leaving a ring of foam around the glass. Smells of milk chocolate, sherry, and a hint of espresso or coffee beans - very typical for the style. Taste contains all of the above, with a sharpness to the alcohol that shows it's not as hidden as some fresh 11% abv stouts I've had, but it's not overbearing either. Mouthfeel is think and vicious, not much sweetness on the palate; it is a rather heavy and filling beer. Overall, I've had better, but this is enjoyable and worth sampling at the brewery. I'd like to see what a couple of years of age would do for this beer.
