Bottle enjoyed with dinner at Cammeray Craft.

Pours a dark brown, some slow bead, some light beige head. Lace is decently sticky. Looks alright.

Served a bit cold. Warming up with decent smoke character coming through. Nice and meaty, with very decent chocolate malt character as well. Sweet but smoky? You're talking my language.

Taste is again sweet, with plenty of cocoa notes and real chocolate character. Smoke exists concurrently with it, coming through with some sharp wood smoke notes and a touch of tobacco that hits the back of the palate. Yeah, soft smoke that gets more intense towards the back. Well matched with the sweetness, very pleasant beer indeed.

Creamy and smooth upfront, gets a little sharp on the back. Decent.

Great smoked porter. Doesn't shy away from the smoke but doesn't get subjugated by it either. Best of both worlds really.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a hazy dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, smoked malt, and caramel aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, char, and smoke flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of smoke bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a really nice smoke presence that comes through especially well in the taste.

Visual: Black. Effervescent caramel head, which emulsifies into a tight creamy foam.

Nose: Creamy coffee and sweet booze by a log fire. Roasted marshmallows.

Taste: Snacks by the campfire. Smores and Chocolate raisins. Surprisingly fruity.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Light yet veering on creamy. Gentle carbonation.

330ml bottle. Shaker glass. Bright brown color, tan head. Foam is creamy & shows good retention. Roasted malt & burnt chocolate aromas. Sweet peated malt, herbal & minty intense flavors displayed in a creamy upfront. Light body. Moderate carbonation. Oily to watery texture. Low & gentle bitterness, subtle smoky notes & hints of licorice candy in the middle linger into the finish. Herbs & dark chocolate on the aftertaste.

A 330ml bottle with no visible BB date. Acquired a while back from Trembling Madness in York. The 'etched' label art is pretty cool....

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A very dark reddish-brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Produces a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of dark, smoky malt with hints of roasted grain, subtle burnt notes, woodsmoke, dried fruit, mild caramel, a twinge of molasses, faint liquorice and earthy yeast. A hint of kippers in the background. Rounded and satisfying.

Tastes of rich, smoky malt with a roasty character and a dry finish. Notes of dark roasted malt, burnt grain, smoke, molasses, mild dried fruit, subtle cocoa, a hint of liquorice, faint caramel, stewed leaves and earthy yeast. Highly attenuated, with a lingering yeasty quality and a restrained, malty bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with pleasant carbonation and a slightly insubstantial body. Pretty astringent, followed by an aftertaste of smoky, roasted malt, earthy yeast and faint stewed leaves.

Nice one - a dark, balanced brew with more than a whiff of smoke to it. Looks good, while the aroma and flavour are dominated by woodsmoke and roasted grain. Dry and yeasty with a well-judged bitterness. Body is alright but could be a shade thicker. Tasty; not quite on the level of a Schlenkerla but a quality effort. If smoke is your thing then this is worth a punt.

Bottle: a standard dark brown 330mL bottle with an interesting craft label.

Appearance: on the initial pour, an enourmous off-white head explodes up, leaving little beer. After a second or 2 the head drops to a creamy, off-white head atop a dark body. Fantastic, thick lacing.

Aroma: not a whole heap on the nose to be honest, but what is there is decent. A nice, clean smoke and peat, with some malt and tobacco. Promising.

Taste: there is some smoke flavour, but not as chalky or intense as a rauchbier. Some chocolate malts backing up - interesting.

Aftertaste: the smoke hangs about for a time with some of those spices and malt hanging about.

Mouth feel: a light- to- moderate feel, quite sharp to start dropping back to something a bit smoother on the finish.

Overall: not a bad smoked beer at all - unfortunately it isn't my preferred style of beer. That makes the price of around AU$180+ per case of 24 x 330mL (2014) just a tad high.

330ml bottle purchased from Slowbeer in Melbourne.

Pours a dusty brown colour, quite dark, but certainly brown rather than black. Head forms a huge frothy crest initially, despite a careful pour, but settles into a centimetre or so of tan froth. Lacing forms in pretty tidy, solid streaks. Looks decent enough.

Nose is sweet-smoky, with a subtly ashy character coming from the smoked malts, but a stronger chocolate or toasted sweetness coming through from the other malts. Mild fruitiness makes an appearance as well, leaving a subtle suggestion of red grapes and cherries. Mostly, the chocolate and the sweetness win out, although the other characters add complexities to the aroma. Nice stuff.

Taste is a little simpler, but still pleasant. Solid toasted basis leaves husky chocolate and brown malt characters somewhere between sweet and savoury. Slight bite of roast on the back is accentuated by the smoke, making it seem a little darker than otherwise. The smoke flavours are quite subdued, leaving just a reminiscence in the aroma. Feel is quite light, but the sweetness that remains gives a vestige of body to the palate.

Overall: pretty decent stuff. It's solidly made, and the smoke, while subtle, is used to good effect.

330ml from Utobeer in Borough Market, London (£3.50):
Dark brown with a very big, foamy head that is a tan brown colour and increases in size initially then settles and remains thick throughout.

Strong smoked smell coming through with darker malts and a whole lot of spice as well. The aroma seems pungent in parts and is backed up with some sugar and some peat as well. Unbalanced with some dark chocolate and even darker fruits coming through as well as background hops.

Smoked with some strong peat and dark malts although none of these are as strong as I was expecting given the aroma. Sugar with some spice again but sadly these are all that well balanced either and not to my liking really. Dark fruits, a hint of bitter hops and a lot of bitterness right at the end with a bit of smokiness & some ham.

Medium bodied and very smoky with a lot of spice too and a dark, sugary feel to proceedings. The beer is lightly carbonated and smooth with a bitter finish to it.

A fairly unbalanced beer and one that featured the dreaded taste of cured ham, although thankfully not as strong as with some of the German smoked beers out there. Still not a good beer sadly.

Pours dark brown with a small head.
Nose shows smoked malt, campfire notes, sweet toasty malt and some nutty notes.
Very similar falvours; smoked, toasty and light roasted malt.
Needs more carbonation.
Enjoyable stuff, quite light for a porter...

Never tried these guys before but heard some good wraps so anyway it pours the darkest brown hue with a rather creamy one finger head that stays and leaves some subtle lacing, the smell is peat and I mean light peat with milky chocolate, smoked malts and herbal hops, the mouthfeel is creamy, medium bodied and slightly overcarbonated with tastes of some smokey dark malts, milk chocolate, ripe dark fruits and finished with a cherry chocolate bittersweetness and overall out of the ones I've tried this was the one I felt worth reviewing and definitely a hidden gem against their more well known line up worth a buy cheers.

On tap into a snifter in Sunny Melbourne.

Appearance: Blackish Brown pour. 1 Finger head dark that evaporated very quickly. There was a solid thick lacing up and down the glass that didn't want to go anywhere.

Aroma: A hint of smoke is the first thing you notice, but it doesn't overpower the sense like The Big Smoke. It's more subtle, still in the forefront, but the background chocolates and dark fruits are more noticeable and blend nicely. Smells good.

Taste: A big smoky to start, basically the aroma chasing into your mouth., but again not overpowering. Coffee then become readily apparent. Light chocolate, a bit of liquorice, dark sweet malt. Finish balanced, medium dry with a slight bitterness to off set the sweet.

Mouth Feel: Medium bodied, light carbonation, keep it light.

Overall: I am very happy to have gotten it on tap. Smooth body and taste makes it an easy drinking, yet complex smoked porter. I do love how the smoke is a compliment to the overall taste and not forcefully taking the reins.
