Stopped by on the way out of Saginaw because I read that they had DRIPA on tap (nope).
The Michigan Tap Room shares its space with a 20+ lane bowling alley (Stardust Lanes). Atmosphere is lousy, surrounded by either league bowlers, teenagers, or families with young children. Super weird place to have a craft beer bar. It really didn't gel.
The quality of the place was fine. They had lounge seating, which was a plus, but there wasn't a lot of it. Bar stools, pub tables, or circled cushioned chairs to choose from. Again, we were in a bowling alley, so it was dark, a little smelly, and noisy. Overall, however, it wasn't unclean.
The service was good, despite the fact that it's kind of hard to get a server's attention from the lounge area. Drinks were poured quickly and I yakked with one of the bartenders about DRIPA, how he was frustrated too that they didn't have it yet.
Selection was very good, lots of Michigan locals, and not the kind that you always see, like Two Hearted and Red's Rye or Breakfast Stout. No, they focused on seasonals and limited releases, like Oro de Calabaza, Gingersnap, Griffin Claw BBA Stout, Bean Flicker. No walez, of course, but it ain't whale season for Michigan just yet. Free samples and flights for all taps were other pluses. Finally, they kept their menu pretty updated.
Everything was definitely on the cheap side.
All in all, I would go back, despite the ridiculous setting. The selection is too good to pass up, especially if you're not from Michigan, and the serving staff was definitely up to snuff and relatively knowledgeable.

So the Michigan Tap Room.
Atmosphere: Nestled in a bowling alley (Stardust Lanes) its pretty much out of place for an establishment you would expect to be serving PBR, Bud and Miller Lite. I happen to think it is unique and eclectic, with the neon lanes and lounge furniture.
Quality: The beer that needed to be fresh was fresh, the lines were clean and so was the glasswear.
Service: The staff was attentive and friendly, even made some good recomendations.
Selection: This is why this establishment excels. Great selection and attention are paid to styles, seasonals and variety. Nothing to complain about here.
Food: Food variety and quality has improved since my first visit.
Value: I had no issue with any of the prices. Everything seemed more than reasonable to me.
Updated after visiting again in June 2014.
The menu has gotten better and the staff seems to know the beer much better. Revised ratings.
