I just read on the internet that this bar annex shop is closed because the owner got sick. Don't know if this bar will re-open again. It was situated in a very odd small village. About 5 miles from the Belgium border is the village Baarle Nassau, which is dutch. In this village there are 33 pieces of land and houses which are belgian The pieces of belgian land are called Baarle Hertogh. You can see this whem you look at the housenumbers, the belgian houses have a belgian flagnumber and the dutch house have a dutch flag. Unique in the world.

First of all... getting there. I used a GPS system that took me from Antwerp to Hoogstraaten and then down an increasingly unlikely series of minor roads, some of which didn't really justify the word 'road' at all!

Never mind... when you get there it's very interesting. A friendly welcome from the guy in charge, some big racks full of beers you have never previously encountered in small and large sizes, and you will be guided as to whether the stuff you are groping for is any good or not (!)

I really thought I knew how to read a Dutch menu, but when it came to the food selection I was baffled. Perhaps it's the difference between Dutch and Flaams? Anyway, he explained it to me, I stopped to eat and I got the most enormous leg of ham in a thick brwon gravy. Lovely. Washed down with (a new one for me) a Gouasse. He gave me a complimentary glass to go with the case I bought.

So... reccommended. Take a car with a big carrying capacity. You will need it.

To get to Het Brouwershuis, you have to cross the Dutch border, though it is actually part of Belgium. There is a beer store there, well worth shopping extensively in, and a tasting room. It was quite larger and more impressive then I had expected. There was a huge back room for club meetings, which really felt like an indoor beer hall, with picnic-style tables. A really excellent selection of beer as well, which included some vintage beers in my visits there. Well worth the visit.

A few years ago, whilst basecamp for our Annual Easter Trip was Antwerp, we had a ride into the North Brabant province of the Netherlands to visit one of Belgium’s forgotten conquests. I am not referring to the Congo, but Baarle-Hertog. An enclave completely surrounded by Dutch North Brabant – but this Belgium oasis sits proud. This situation arose because of a cock-up with a treaty in the mid 1800’s; it’s somehow comforting to know that Politicians screwed up even then.

The Brouwershuis is a 2-storey brown brick building bedecked in Breweriana with a large wooden sign in the shape of a Clog, & wooden barrels outside. Located on the main drag not far from the centre, it has two functions in life. The first & most important is the Beer Store at the front. Secondly it is a Beer Bar where you can enjoy a beverage after a hard days beer shopping.

The Beer Store is just like your best dream-version of Wal-Mart. The front part of the building is quite simply a Cathedral to Beer; rows & rows, high & low shelves, small bottles, big ones, 4-packs, 6-packs, Adverts, Promo Beer Stuff, Glasses, T-Shirts & Beer Condoms..., its all here. Well over 750 beers on my last visit, including many Seasonals & some serious Rarities. The old guy that works here was like a walking beer-encyclopedia, he knew *everything* about Belgium & Dutch beer, as well as where it is located (so it’s nothing like Wal-Mart I suppose LOL). It is not uncommon to see people shopping here with more than One Trolley-Cart. Self-control is seriously needed here. The guy who showed us around said he had seen many arguments between loved ones. I guess you know that story by heart no doubt!!

The BeerBar part of the Brouwershuis is rather small, & it is quite the laid back setting. You can drink some of the beers that you have purchased, or you can select a cool beer from the list of 50+. As it was a hot Easter when we called, we all sat outside for a beer or two after spending up.

Primarily this is a Beer Store – & it does a bloody good job at fulfilling this role. For me it is one of the best (worst?!) beer shopping experiences of my life. I am sure I nearly called to re-Mortgage my House in England before I even got half way round.

If you get here – & it is WELL worth the journey – bring that new Asbestos Credit Card that you have – you WILL need it; Believe me!! Oh, & be thankful for the Euro – when I last came here, the arrangements with Belgium Francs & Dutch Guilders was just ridiculous!
