look: 4.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: pitch black with a thick tan and long lasting head leaving awesome lacing on the glass.

Aroma: coffee and dark chocolate, roasted malts and ash. A bit hoppy in the back. Maybe there are some delicate notes of port? I smell something there, but I don't know if it's that or someting else. Overall very pleasant and rich aroma.

Taste: big roastiness followed by dark chocolate and coffee notes. Warming, not so strong alcohol aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium to high carbonation. Probably would be better with softer carbonation.

Overall: Good Imperial Stout. There are no port notes in the taste, or they're covered by the roastiness and dark chocolate. Still a nice drink and can be recommended.

Enjoyed in a teku glass.

Got this one from the Duvel guy down the road.

From a bottle into a snifter
Imperial stout with port

APPEARANCE: A careful pour come out dark brown and yields a two finger, medium looking, fluffy tan head with very good retention. Clear brown body with very high levels of carbonation evident for the style. Head fades to a thick foam cap with some good staying power. A half foamy wisp remains leaving some lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted and charred malts, dark chocolate, some light tobacco, leather, and oak on the nose. No real port, per se. Medium strength.

TASTE: Roasted notes, charred malts, some leather and dark chocolate at the swallow. Bolder and lingering finish of roasted grain, leather, bitter dark chocolate, some cocoa powder and light oak. Alcohol as well. No real port wine flavors per se, but the other flavors are pretty nice as it is.

PALATE: Medium body with medium carbonation. A touch light on the palate, creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is solid. One of the better imperial stouts from the small Dutch breweries around now, which, admittedly, isn't saying much. There wasn't a lot in terms of the port barrels here, but perhaps that's a good thing, as the base beer was pretty good on its own. Check it out if you're in the area. Cheers!
