Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with little light transmission in the glass and a quarter finger, light khaki head that dissipates to and thin cap with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, biscuit malt, molasses, maple syrup and nuts. Flavor is lightly toasted biscuit malt, light molasses, brown bread, maple syrup and a touch of caramel; light maple and bready yeast in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A quite nicely brewed brown ale with the promised maple syrup flavor, which is light enough to be a clear note through the malt, but does not overwhelm the brown ale base. Well balanced and with just a little sweetness. A very nice take on the brown ale style. I liked this a lot.

Pours a brown/black with a 2F tan head and a lot of lacing.

Smells of sweet malt with a bit of coffee bitterness..

Tastes of malt, coffee, caramel and maple with a barely bitter boozy warm finish.

Medium light body with very light carbonation. Lightly lush syrupy mouthfeel.

This is a very sweet light bodied sipper. Sort of a breakfast stout light.

Poured from the can into a nonic(k) pint glass.

Real rich forming head, thick with a light khaki to faint tan brown color. Snapping off the pour and thick retention and giant cap sitting on top that sinks slowly like an elevator. Real nice mahogany red color, with touches of clarity it seems as well. Very nice aggressive looking brown here.

Solid aroma, consisting mostly of a soft nougat and more of a nut like flavor on the nose. Minimal toast, but not sense of sweetness or even maple really. Still a simple brown malt character sits in the balance.

Palate sits with a nice restful and subtle flavor. Rich sensing mid palate slightly, but only by a hair. Malt backbone is simple giving to light touches of toasted brown bread, but more of a nutty and light sensing wood sweetness. Fininshes with milky chocolate, and hints of cream like sweetness to go int the mix. Wood and mild earth like coffee round out some of the flavors.

The maple sugar sweetness isn't apparent, but it really seems to have helped pull more wood and sweeter flavors out of the base ingredients, making for a real delicious experience.

From a 16 oz. can sampled on February 7, 2021.

Attractive amber pour with red highlights under a modest, lasting tan head. It looks the part 100%.

Lovely sweet and malty aromas along with the promised maple syrup, a touch of licorice and smoke, and a light floral hop note.

Medium body.

Sweet and malty taste along with the maple and a refreshing floral bite of hops at the end. Little to no booze in the aroma or in the taste. A nicely done Imperial Brown.

It’s not exactly news that I’m a sucker for maple in pretty much anything. But in beer? It is absolutely blissful when done right. Some of my favorite beers of all time utilize maple, but it’s usually in a stout base. I think it’ll be interesting to see how it translates to the lighter base of a brown ale

Pours a very dark brown with 2 fingers of light brown head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves no lacing at all

Honestly my first impressions of the nose are really disappointing, it’s as if almost nothing’s there. I’m picking up on notes of artificial maple syrup, dark bread, milk chocolate, and vanilla, but it’s all very subtle. Still, not bad, and gets better as it warms

The taste is at least a bit more present, but nothing mind blowing. On the front end I taste chocolate malt, light maple, and sweet caramel. The swallow brings notes of more artificial maple, sticky sweet caramel, a bit of a dark fruit complexion, a flash of earthy hops, brown sugar, and dark bready malt to close it all out

A medium full body pairs with light tingling carbonation for a smooth yet heavy beer. Finishes dry and surprisingly crisp for a beer of its size, so I’ll give it that

I won’t lie, I struggled with this one a bit. It was a bit underwhelming and subtle. But, for what it is, it’s pretty good. I think I was just hoping for a little more presence, but I’ll still happily finish off the can

Consumed 11/24/19

A: Deep, dark brown, nearly black - opaque except around the edges - pours with a medium sized tan head, retains a few wisps of a cap and a small collar, leaves a nice wall of lacing

S: Rich malts and yes, some maple syrup - smells dark enough that this could probably pass as a porter, if not a stout, but it does still smell like a brown ale - some slightly roasted notes and chocolate malts, but mostly the aroma centers on dark bread, bread crust, and maybe some biscuit - nutty, as most brown ales are - the maple aroma is definitely here, more of a dark amber syrup than a more mellow variety - sweetness from malts and from the maple, comes together quite remarkably with the roasty, bready, and nutty aromas

T: Dark flavors, with just hints of roast, not really burnt - loads of dark bread and bread crust, biscuits, caramel grains - somewhat nutty - maple is just as obvious as in the aroma, but it hits after the roasty, nutty bread crust flavors - really nice maple flavor without being overly sweet - some additional sweetness from the malts, but definitely not cloying - some lingering roast followed by maple

M: On the heavy side of medium, medium carbonation, smooth

O: Hold on a minute, Maple Brown isn't a style...

I suppose the best descriptor of this would be a Double/Imperial Brown Ale with maple added. Regardless of what box the style fits in, I enjoy it. Double Maple Brown is meant to be sipped on a cold night. Or you could pour it on pancakes, whatever.

this is incredible beer, a stronger brown ale packed with high quality maple syrup, darker than most, more of a deep roasted element than i am used to in the style, but still short of the unmalted roasted barley bitterness of a porter or stout, just deep though, complex, full of dark chocolate and raisin character, plenty of earthy dryness to balance the sweetness of the maple, which seems fermented down a little bit, its not over the top in aroma or flavor, but isnt dry either, and is amazingly well integrated here. trace smoke in here keeps it grounded, some dry cocoa, birch, maple sweetness, toffee, fig, even prune, its fantastic, rustic, and has just a little bit of an english yeast flavor as well, exquisite quality overall. some could argue that it needs more maple, but i would hate to ruin the balance involved here, its deep and nuanced and warms up brilliantly. i loved it in the summer, we all did, but i want it on a windy colorful november afternoon as i wear a flannel and slow cook some meat. it screams fall, and its awesome. some of the best beers i have had from these guys no doubt!
